DAUGHTER OF DEATH PLAYLIST EXPLANATION
SONG: Paint It Black by Ciara
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: Reina primarily.
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST: Pretty much this entire song fits for Reina. For this first entry of this song in the playlist I’ll point out some general themes and in the entry further along I’ll describe why certain lyrics fit more specific parts of the story as it progressed.
I see a line of cars and they’re all painted blackWith flowers and my love both never to come back
Honestly I always thought the lyric Ciara uses here was “I see a line of colours” not ‘cars’. Therefore I thought it fit Reina well: she sees ‘good’ and ‘brightness’ and a whole bunch of things due to her position and her circumstances and yet she wants to destroy them; she sees them in a different way/different light.
(I want to see it painted, painted, painted blackBlack as night, black as coalI want to see the sun, blotted out from the sky)Obviously the intention of wanting the sun blotted out can be literal for these vampires but metaphorically Reina consistently blots out ‘good’ in this story again and again...
I look inside myself and see my heart is black
It’s not easy facing up when your whole world is black
Reina does not take accountability very easily. Sure, she sometimes ‘faces up’ with some guilt over what she’s done but she doesn’t fully feel remorse really ever. When someone is as ‘dark’ and selfish as Reina is, they don’t mind that they live in darkness; they in fact thrive.
No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
No more will Reina be ‘changing’ especially not for the better. Her descent into darkness combined with her physical transformations that will eventually halt her age make it so that she will no longer progress ‘naturally’ as a green sea might progress to blue, etc.
SONG: Become the Beast by Karliene
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: Ferdinand & Reina
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST: Pretty much every lyric matches Ferdinand’s point of view towards Reina. This song was originally meant by the artist as a ‘Hannibal’ fan-song. But it fits so well. It describes Ferdinand’s influence over Reina and in some ways her own personal reflection on what becoming like him makes her feel. Spoilers: she loves her new powers/abilities. It doesn’t scare her to be so predatory. His darkness is intoxicating. The ‘splinters of his soul’ easily take root.
I’ve always been a hunter/Nothing on my tail
But there was something in you I knew/Could make that change
Could describe both his change to being a lover/mentor but could also describe that there’s something in her that could make the change to being like him and joining behind his ‘tail’.
To capture a predator/You can’t remain the prey
You have to become An equal/ In every way
You can’t remain as weak ‘prey’ and must become my equal as a fellow predator and vampire.
So look in the mirror/And tell me, who do you see? /Is it still you?/ Or is it me?
Become the beast/ We don’t have to hide/ Do I terrify you/ Or do you feel alive?
Do you feel the hunger/ Does it howl inside?/ Does it terrify you? /Or do you feel alive?
The hunger can refer to the propensity towards violence but obviously the hunger for blood too.
Splinters of my soul/ Cut through your skin/ And burrow within/ Burrow within
So embrace the darkness/ And I will help you see/ That you can be limitless/ And fearless/ If you follow with me
We are the lions/ In a world of lambs/ We are the predators, /The hunters, /The hunters, /The hunters
SONG: Ravens by Anica
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: in some ways, Queen Edeline is the focus of this song but some of the lyrics could apply to Reina and/or Ferdinand
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST: first off the tone, melody and beat of this song really matches the story in the sense of it sounding slightly medieval at times but also being a soft cry in the darkness that the entire feeling of the song implies. I also like how the beat implies a heartbeat...
No I don’t need you to save me but it’s driving me crazy now
Edeline doesn’t need ‘saving’ but she wants to do the saving herself. Yet, she might be out of her depth...
It’s not a hesitant maybe but a headfirst leap straight down
There’s no hesitation for Edeline: her mission to rid the world of Reina begins almost instantly the moment she is suspicious of her and doesn’t waiver.
There’s something in your eyes and it’s giving your disguise away
This actually has dual meaning. Reina recognizes Edeline in her disguise when they get in close. But also, there’s something in Reina’s eyes that gives away her true nature; you can see looking closely she’s not the prim and proper princess as she’s thought to be: she’s a monster with little to no remorse. Edeline can see the demon within at one point!
No I don’t want it to last if the glass is gonna break
Again this can be literal but I choose to see it metaphorically. There are illusions they all see about their lives throughout; no one in this story will remain ‘happy’ for long before something shatters their routine/lives.
No I don’t need you to judge me, go and kick me off my feet
Can be for Reina in the sense that she faces judgement for what she is and Edeline tries to kick her down and out of her life. Question is will her step-mother succeed? Reina doesn’t think so. BUT this line is also foreshadowing for Queen Edeline; watch for it ;)
We’ve got ghosts from our pasts just to remind us that we bleed
There are a few things in here that are ‘ghosts of the past’; mistakes both women have made but also literal times that both have bled physically in moments of weakness and/or overpowerment.
There’s something bout the way that the earth turns light to dark
Under a sky of ravens the sun seems miles too far
Listen to the cries of ravens as they fly above
A crooked kingdom lies under a darkened sky for us
That last line especially applies to this story in a literal sense. If Edeline fails then a metaphorical dark cloud will go over Bayern under the rule of the evil and ‘crooked’ Reina thus polluting the kingdom and its reputation. Ravens are a bad omen and symbolize death: death will blot out the sun literally and metaphorically. The vampir must live in literal and figurative darkness.
SONG: Everybody Wants to Rule the World by Lorde
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: Edeline, Princess Reina and Ferdinand
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST: I didn’t just choose this song because it was on the soundtrack for another vampire story ‘Dracula Untold’ although that did help in my recollection of it haha
Welcome to your lifeThere's no turning back
Reina cannot turn back on her transformation. If she didn’t kill her father she had only a month to live. If she did not become fully transformed into a vampir, her life expectancy would have been altered.
Even while we sleep We will find You acting on your best behavior
Best behaviour here is ironic: while people sleep in this story bad things happen because of the vampir: their best is sometimes the worst nightmares for some of the characters. King Arnaud dies when Reina follows Ferdinand’s instructions on how to best kill him. Nightmares happen as the result of the fear of the vampir. When Reina sleeps, Ferdinand watches her without explanation; foreboding like. When the dwarves are put to sleep, Ferdinand wakes Reina. The list goes on...
Turn your back on mother nature
Everybody wants to rule the world
By ‘turning her back’ on mother nature, Reina is an unnatural creature as she turns into a vampir
It's my own desireIt's my own remorseHelp me to decideHelp me make the most Of freedom and of pleasureNothing ever lasts foreverReina wants the best for herself. You do see her have some remorse throughout but it’s often short and superficially placed. She wants Ferdinand to grant her the best life through this transformation. Can it last forever? It theoretically should if they succeed.
There's a room where the light won't find youHolding hands while the walls come tumbling downWhen they do, I'll be right behind youSo glad we've almost made itSo sad they had to fade itThere are a lot of ties to the story in the above lyrics. Firstly the dark room is a physical reality that Ferdinand and later Reina at full transformation will require. This room foreshadows Edeline’s fate. Holding hands while walls crumble symbolizes the alliance between Ferdinand and Reina as they survive much in their immortality and also make changes to the existing ways of life at Brickwall and later at the palace. The hands also symbolize Edeline and God: she sees so much failing but holds onto her hope and belief that she is doing the right thing and he is on her side. Further it can stand for the alliance between her and Errol. The next lyric again symbolizes the explanation above. The so glad and so sad again relates to each coupling in that things go right but things also go wrong and/or fade away.
I can't stand this indecisionMarried with a lack of visionPerhaps it can be said that Edeline rushes into her plans and it fails her. Perhaps too it can be said that Reina rushes into things with Ferdinand and will it eventually lead to indecision, boredom and the breakdown of what she saw for herself and for him? Time shall tell.
Say that you'll never, never, never, need itOne headline, why believe it?The report of Reina’s death, the report of what happened to anyone who goes missing in the story, Reina’s manipulation to have the dwarves forget the injuries she gives them, the story Edeline provides after Reina is found ‘dead’ by the dwarves, the reports of what Edeline did –why believe them? None of them are true. There are so many lies in this story.
All for freedom and for pleasureNothing ever lasts foreverEverybody wants to rule the world
I think this is fitting as a conclusion to scope over the story’s events done for freedom and pleasure and yet nothing lasts forever even when you’re immortal. Everybody wants their side to win in this conflict. Everybody wants to ‘rule’ the ‘world’; the outcome of the events in the world.
SONG:
I (Just) Died in Your Arms
by Hidden Citizens
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: Edeline although the lyric ‘died in your arms tonight’ can at one point refer to Ansel or Errol both. The analysis is for The Dowager though.
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST: I really loved the epic way this cover was put together. It reflects some of the dark, edgy tone of the story. I can see a music video made/trailer for this story made using this song and scenes from the story!
I, I just died in your arms tonightIt must've been something you saidI just died in your arms tonight
While the ‘something you said’ doesn’t make literal sense the ‘died in your arms’ could be foreshadowing for Reina or for Edeline. Only time will tell in this instance...
Keep looking for something I can't get
Edeline has searched her entire life for the feeling of fitting in, for one. She searches for the love of a suitor: finds and loses it with both her past and with Arnaud. And then she searches for the peace of being rid of Reina; doesn’t seem to get it.
Broken hearts lie all around me
With every new day, Reina slowly destroys more and more and so hearts are broken with all the death and destruction. Not to mention Arnaud was so broken hearted about his late wife and Edeline could not ever help that.
And I don't see an easy way to get out of this
She can’t seem to find any easy way out of her duty of ridding the world of this evil threat that Reina poses. She can’t seem to fulfill it and she definitely is not going to abandon it.
I've lost and found, it's my final mistake
‘Lost and found’ are a number of things in Edeline’s story both with people and information and experience. ‘Final mistake’: is this foreshadowing for Reina or is it for Edeline?
Loving by proxy, no give and all take
As a step-mother Edeline could try to be the female influence in Reina’s life but she’s not; a mutual agreement. And after the death of King Arnaud Edeline has little time to ‘love’ Reina both out of grief and out of the suspicion of what her step-daughter is. Loving by proxy in the place of either parent is not at all there; no give no take.
I, I just died in your arms tonightIt must've been some kind of kiss
The ‘kind of kiss’ may symbolize the vampire bite. There is also a literal kiss alluded to in the story and if you picked up on the subtle part of the story that actually ties into another part well I’m proud of you reader and I want you to message me instantly to discuss!!! J
I should've walked away,I should've walked awayI should've walked away
I love, love the way the lyric is shouted almost in pain. It really captures Queen Edeline I feel.
SONG: Bleeding Out –cover of Imagine Dragons
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: primarily Errol.
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST: look obviously the title literally applies but let’s get deeper into the other lyrics! ;)
I'm bleeding outSaid if the last thing that I doIs to bring you downI'll bleed out for youSo I bear my skinAnd I count my sinsAnd I close my eyesAnd I take it inAnd I'm bleeding outI'm bleeding out for you (for you)
Errol to his dying breath was trying to take Reina down but unfortunately suffered his death at her hands instead. He almost bled to death but instead she used that as an opportunity to take back her own existence by feeding off his blood.
When the day has comeBut I've lost my way around
When ‘day’ comes, it’s symbolic for good; the light. These good days are sometimes tainted in that he has had his memory altered and so ‘lost’. Lost his way is metaphorical in the sense of when each day literally comes he finds new things are wrong or alternatively has had his mind altered and lost his way around the truth.
And the seasons stop and hide beneath the ground
Yo this is a super metaphorical and deeply poetic way to basically say: ‘you’re dead’.
When the sky turns grayAnd everything is screamingI will reach insideJust to find my heart is beating
At the worst moments of fear, Errol must steel himself and remind himself why he’s trying to destroy Reina and recall that he is living (beating heart; alive) and ‘good’ and she is evil and death incarnate.
You tell me to hold onOh you tell me to hold onBut innocence is goneAnd what was right is wrong
Edeline may literally tell him to hold on to faith and courage. Reina may tell him all is well. But Errol knows better and there is a struggle there to hold onto hope and faith and survive because he knows deep in his heart that this is very much evil and ‘wrong’ and he’s up against a lot.
When the hour is nighAnd hopelessness is sinking inAnd the wolves all cryTo feel they're not worth holleringWhen your eyes are redAnd emptiness is all you knowWith the darkness fedI will be your scarecrow
These lyrics are symbolic of the darkness that is closing in on Brickwall and only Errol knows it; feels the pain of his fellow housemates in the red-eyes from Jacob’s death and the literal feeding of darkness (Reina taking blood) but also the metaphorical feeding of the darkness of Reina inside of her and he alone becomes the ‘scarecrow’ to stave off any further darkness coming into their household.
SONG: When the Sun Goes Down by Tommee Profitt featuring Laney Jones
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: basically anyone who faces up against Reina
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST:
Wish upon star well it might come trueBut while you're staring at the sun you neglect the moonWith your back turned bracing up against the wallYou'll be picking up the pieces of what you want
This paragraph really summarizes how if you aren’t careful or mindful as many characters are at some point of this story, it can be a grave mistake. You might lose your life or something precious.
The storm is a coming so you better runThe coldness is hungry like loaded gunSharks are circling out in the deepYou dream for tomorrow when you can't sleep
This truly represents the foreboding of having the knowledge of what Reina is out there in the world and the feeling like you may become a victim of the evil if you don’t do something/plan something/dream for tomorrow and a better day.
When the sun goes downWhen the sun goes downWhen the sun goes downThere's nowhere to hideNowhere to hide, when the sun goes down
Literally when the sun goes down is the best time for the vampir. Metaphorically if all the good (the light) goes from the world/the house/the kingdom by having Reina and Ferdinand succeed then at some point there will be no one safe and all will be lost.
My spirit is sinking like a ship's been wreckedOld history repeating trying to forgetWaves are crashing up against me nowWhen I make it out of here some way, somehow
These can apply specifically to Errol and Edeline as they experience moments where they’re afraid to their very ‘spirit’/soul. Their faith in God’s help is tested. History repeating is on a few things: Reina’s repeated attacks/feedings, the failure to stop her and the deaths that occur. There is a feeling of helplessness at points and will they make it out?
Fight like thunder 'til my body breaksI've nothing left to lose it's been taken awayEverything precious now is goneForever I'll be waiting for the rising dawn
I really like these lyrics. Those who oppose Reina literally give everything they have mentally and physically: possibly including their lives. And should everyone who knows of what she is fail, well the kingdom will forever wait for some good some ‘light’ to come about and rise up against the evil.
There's a flameThere's a flameThere's a flame in the darknessThere's a flame, there's a flameThere's a flame in the darknessThere's a flameThere's a flame in the darknessThere's a flameThere's a flame in the darkness
This lyric can represent a ‘light’ in the form of hope and the form of opposition against Reina and especially the faith that God is that flame that won’t go out despite darkness around them. Not to mention, this lyric is repeated so many times it is like a chant; a prayer; a mantra to get through those moments when you are terrified to go up against this ultimate evil creature the vampir
SONG: Monsters by Ruelle
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: Reina and Ferdinand
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST: OMG I have loved this song for so, so long and have played it on repeat in the context of this story! These lyrics fit perfectly
You've got no place to hide. And I'm feeling like a villain, got a hunger inside.
The literal hunger for blood. The vampir is the villain of this story.
One look in my eyes, and you're running causeI'm coming going to eat you alive. Ah, ah, ah, oh.
For those rare moments in the story the characters see a demonic/evil expression on Reina and/or Ferdinand. If they don’t bewitch their prey the person/animal will be spooked away.
Your heart hits like a drum, oh, oh ohThe chase has just begun, oh, oh, oh
Reina likes to play games as does Ferdinand. They enjoy the feeling they get of being the creatures they are and seeing others spooked into submission.
Monsters stuck in your head(we are, we are, we are)Monsters under your bed(we are, we are)We are monsters oh, oh(we are, we are)
We are monsters ohHonestly when it comes down to it: these vampir are not charming, not suave or admirable: they’re monsters who have no empathy or sympathy or remorse for the selfish pain they cause physically and emotionally when they take lives and/or frighten people with their abilities and behaviour.
One misstep, you're mineAnd you better stay clever if you wanna surviveOnce you cross the line
You'll be wishing you would listen when you meet your demise
I like this because it pertains to Errol and honestly Edeline as well. They went up against Reina and they will lose if they make even one tiny mistake. They will meet their demise literally.
we never shoot to stun
we're kings of the killingwe're out for blood,
we'll take them one by oneReina and Ferdinand are dangerous especially when together. They are not to be underestimated and they will destroy people without a second thought. The vampir at large are as well.
SONG: Tomorrow We Fight by Tommee Profitt featuring Svrcina
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: Reina, Ferdinand and Edeline all.
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST:
Deep in the forest under the fogArmies surround us waiting for darkWearing their iron masks like shieldI know they're coming I know they're here
Clearly Edeline knows about Reina in the forest; she knows that these ‘vampir’ exist and what they are capable of. ‘Iron masks’ is symbolic of the way that the vampir can give simple instructions to others and make them believe and do what they want all with a straight face for their own pleasure. Obviously the ‘waiting for dark’ is literal but also metaphoric of the ‘dark and bad times’ ahead if Edeline fails.
Oh that light, oh is brightSleep for today but tomorrow we fight
Obviously the light is harmful to vampir. But also the light of good. The today and tomorrow shows waiting to gather strength, knowledge and resources before going ahead with the plan. This applies to both Edeline’s and then Reina and Ferdinand’s plans.
Cold in the violenceAfter the warHope is a fireTo keep us warm
The hope of success; the hope of trust in The Lord keeps Edeline (and at one point Errol) warm and less fearful of the evil they face. After the ‘war’ which was quite violent with Errol, Edeline and Reina there is death. The violence was done coldly without remorse on both sides.
Children of angerEden's forgotWaiting for the hourThe battle is done
‘Anger’ and ‘Eden’s forgot’ can allude to biblical things of a fall from heaven which is essentially what Edeline believes the vampir to be. Both sides of this ‘battle’ just want their way and want things to be done.
Ahh, Ahh, Ahh, Wait for the warAhh, Ahh, Ahh, Wait for the war
Ahhhhh, tomorrow we fightAhhhhh, tomorrow we fightAhhhhh, tomorrow we fightAhhhhh, tomorrow we fight
This alludes to more coming in the story... stay tuned! ;)
SONG: Monster –cover of Imagine Dragons
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: Reina
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST: I chose this for the reason that a girl is singing to sort of give the same vibe of Reina’s thoughts and feelings. I have contemplated the lyrics applying a little to Edeline as well but this song is mostly Reina’s so enjoy my analysis! Please note: these lyrics have been contested on the internet or at least with this version the girl seems to sing some slightly different lyrics. I will comment when and where I deem it appropriate in those instances.
Ever since I could remember,Everything inside of me,Just wanted to fit in (Oh oh oh oh)I was never one for pretenders,Everything I tried to be,Just wouldn't settle in (Oh oh oh oh)
Reina’s childhood she was coddled and told she was ‘long awaited’ and such a ‘miracle’ and it surely gave her external expectations of what she should be. This behaviour towards her also spoiled her. Everything that she did to live up to others’ expectations never actually was fully what /she/ wanted though. It wasn’t really until she made the decision to become like Ferdinand that something felt entirely like her own idea and her own choice and she found such pleasure in it that there was no turning back or regret!
If I told you what I was,Would you turn your back on me?And if I seem dangerous,Would you be scared?I get the feeling just because,Everything I touch isn't dark enoughIf this problem lies in me
She keeps what she is a secret for obvious reasons but she does look forward to the eventual day that she can see fear in people’s eyes; she’s curious what that would be like. She’s always lived with people obeying her because they had to as she was a princess (and later has the power to make them listen to her). She wonders what making people obey her out of fear is like. But she also occasionally is bored with the life she leads at the moments of being in the forest; she wants more ‘action’ so to speak. She does get it in the battle with Errol and his death and it’s a good taste that maybe she can be capable of something more ‘dark’. It pleases her.
I'm only a man with a candle to guide me,I'm taking a stand to escape what's inside me.A monster, a monster,I've turned into a monster,A monster, a monster,And it keeps getting stronger.
Reina enjoys turning into a ‘monster’. Escaping her little bit of remorse and regret at anything she’s done is what she wants not the other way around... The ‘candle’ refers to the little guidance that Ferdinand has given her along the way of her journey.
Can I clear my conscience,If I'm different from the rest,
She is a sociopath and dare we say psychopath? She can easily clear her conscience because she has none.
Do I have to run and hide? (Oh oh oh oh)
In the forest? For now she does. Will she escape it with Ferdinand’s help? Time will tell.
I never said that I want this,This burden came to me,And it's made its home inside (Oh oh oh oh)
She didn’t want to be who she was born as and initially when Ferdinand says that he’s been awaiting her it implies that she was fated to eventually become a vampir. But it’s clear that she chose it too and she enjoys the way the darkness has made a home inside.
SONG: Live Like Legends by Ruelle
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: Ferdinand and Reina
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST: I’ve loved this song since I first heard it because it really reminded me of Ferdinand and Reina! J
When it rains, it poursThere will be blood in the waterCold to the coreFate falls hard on our shoulders
This is obviously literal and figurative both. The ‘fate’ is not really destined but the path that they chose of destruction and eventually looking to rule Bayern together in their evil ways.
This is our timeNo turning backWe could live, we could live like legendsThis is our timeNo turning backWe could live, we could live like legends
Both Reina and Ferdinand look forward to their time together and going to rule Bayern together. A legend feels invincible which is what they feel like they are and will continue to be when they have all the power.
Fate falls hard on our shouldersBut legends never die
A metaphoric ‘never die’ in the sense that people tell the stories of legends forever; we know the story of ‘Snow White’ but do we really? Muahahaha! Also, a literal ‘never die’ since they are vampir. Now is the fate referred to here the two of them being stopped? Time will tell... time will tell... Will they get their literal or metaphoric ‘never die’?
SONG: I’m Not Afraid by Tommee Profitt feat. Wondra
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: Edeline
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST: I think this song shows how Edeline steels her heart and soul against the evil she faces in Reina (and eventually Ferdinand).
You strangled me like an addictionYou captured me like an afflictionAnd I will be nimble and I will be quick
I will overcome all of this
She really did become obsessed with Reina and the ‘problem’ was definitely an affliction. She knows she’ll be able to get through it with her quick action. I like the lyric ‘nimble and quick’ because that’s from a nursery rhyme and ‘Snow White’ is a fairytale typically told to children... Parallels are wonderful!
The shadows are falling they're falling, they're falling around me(I'm not afraid, not afraid)The wolves are closing, they're closing, they're closing in on me(I'm not afraid, not afraid)
There are monsters outside and they're waitinThere are vultures in line salivatinAnd though it is dark in the dead of nightI never go down without a fight
Dark in the dead of night is a good literal statement for when the vampir can easily fight against her. But also when everything looks the bleakest and darkest for Edeline she still has faith and fights on...
Everything changes when the sun goes down Everything changes when the sun goes downEverything changes when the sun goes down
What a beautiful lyric for a story about vampires! But also this is foreshadowing in the form of a metaphor...
SONG: Monsters, acoustic version by Ruelle
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: Ferdinand and Reina
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST: I chose this because: I liked the new pace of this song. Gives it a new feel in regards to the story. The piano feels sinister the way it runs over the notes in the beginning! And the soft way this is sung makes this feel like a good almost sad song to play as we watch characters die in this. Particularly I feel this is a good song to go over shots of Reina and Ferdinand at court... Just wait for those chapters and you might see what I mean... ;)
SONG: Free by Tommee Profitt feat. Svrcina
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: Edeline initially but as I went through the lyrics I saw it applied a little to Reina and Ferdinand as well.
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST:
Let it all come outAnd burn like a fireShout a little bit louderBecause the night still has a thousand nightsAnd when the truth is brought to lightYou and IYou and IWill beFree, free, freeYeah we'll beFree, free, free
For Edeline the truth is what she knows about the vampir. It’s also the truth in the form of God. And when she reveals to Reina inadvertently that she knows about her by trying to kill her (and bringing about the good God represents) she hopes she and the kingdom can be free of the threat of the evil. The truth brought to light for the ‘happy couple’ is in fact lies that they tell the kingdom so that they can gain sympathy and live freely in ‘peace’ ruling over the kingdom.
Break through every door
Edeline gets past every hurdle she has to try and fulfill her goal of ending Reina.
And the stakes get higher
People begin to die while Edeline fails and Ferdinand and Reina even raise the stakes further when they take the ‘fight’ back to court.
Hard evidence is power
What Edeline knows and keeps secret helps her fight Reina without Reina’s suspicion.
Turn the noose of warTrade proof for the liarWe'll shout a little bit louderBecause secrets tell a million lies
Reina is definitely a liar: Edeline sees it on a few occasions. Edeline herself lies to people. So many lies are told throughout the story to try and either maintain a status quo or to advance someone’s plan. But also there are many secrets withheld from many characters at different times. All interconnects.
But the truth is always brought to lightSo you and IYou and IWill beFree, free, freeYeah we'll beFree, free, freeSecrets tell a million liesTo build the walls they hide behindBut the truth is always brought to lightEventually everyone will be forced to face the truth of things one way or another. Or, the altered truth. And then they will be free whether through living a dream life or through death remains to be seen.
SONG: Breathe by Fleurie
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: Edeline with hints of Reina
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST: this song is basically about wondering when one will have the chance to ‘breathe’ which is essentially what Edeline longs for. I like the tone of the song it really ties in well to what a music video featuring the story might have where there’s a bit of a soft feel to it but also then that epic crescendo that ties into the high stakes of the story too.
I hear the soundEchoes beneathAngels and skylines meetAnd I'm straining to reachThe light on the surfaceLight on the other side
This section talks about the setting of the tone of Edeline’s situation: she knows that good and the restoration of ‘holiness’ in the kingdom and in her own personal life are awaiting after Reina’s death.
I feel the pages turningI see the candle burning downBefore my eyesBefore my wild eyesI feel you holding meTighter, I cannot see
Reina’s metaphorical hold over Edeline’s mind and heart with the passage of time are what tie into these lyrics.
When will we finallyBreatheBreatheBreatheBreatheBreathe
I like the repetition of the word ‘breathe’ here I think it really ties into what Edeline and for that matter Reina even feels sometimes where you just need to keep calm and try to keep on going. And Edeline in particular looks forward to being able to ‘breathe easy’ once Reina is gone.
SONG: Sociopath –dark piano by Lucas King
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: Reina and somewhat Ferdinand
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST: this song is instrumental and doesn’t have lyrics but its title first off describes Reina especially. The song’s tone and mood is quite nice and dark and really shows the lack of remorse over the deaths in this story.
SONG: In the End cover of Linkin Park
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: ?
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST: Many of the lyrics in this speak to the end of the story so I’ll get more into it in a future post with a detailed analysis so as not to reveal too many spoilers.
SONG: Everybody Knows by Sigrid
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: the story overall is arched into this
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST: This song is about the dark side of the world; the pessimist’s view of it if you will. We all know; everybody knows about the bad stuff in life and in the world. This is the defeatist feeling one might get during this story when all of the bad continues to happen again and again. For one character in particular this song will be quite relevant in a pivotal moment towards the end of the story. Trust me when I say the “bad guys” do and will go through some tough times so don’t jump the gun and guess who it is just yet ;)
I’ll update when the story is complete with an analysis of the lyrics for your pleasure but for now to avoid spoilers just listen and enjoy...
SONG: Paint It Black, ‘film version’ by Ciara
CHARACTER(S) REPRESENTED/MEANT FOR: Reina primarily.
LYRIC(S) THAT STAND OUT & EXPLANATION OF MY CHOICE TO ADD TO PLAYLIST:
No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blueI could not foresee this thing happening to youShe didn’t see Ansel’s death coming; didn’t see Jacob’s and for that matter she didn’t really foresee herself ever so savagely murdering Errol. There are two deaths that will come that will not be extensively expected either: stay tuned!
If I look hard enough into the setting sunMy love will laugh with me before the morning comes
This speaks to the ‘safety’ that the two vampir lovers have when they are out of sunlight. But, this lyric also speaks to something to come. Stay tuned for the analysis to come to the blog when the story is through!
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothesI have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Reina sees other ‘normal’ people going about their happy lives. She can’t stand the thought of a ‘normal’ life where she does what is expected especially. Reina is also a predator so when she sees other people she has to try some self control not to just toy with them.
