WIP Wednesdays -Drake and Mara (Patreon)
Content
I've decided to do a 'love' theme for this week since it's Valentine's Day coming up and all! ^_^
Here are two characters I've known since I was in Grade 8 and who have grown up as I've grown up. But for now in this WIP excerpt you'll see them as teenagers! :) Teens in love lol
I hope you enjoy!

“Amara,” he blurted before she went to open the door to go down to the basement.
“Yes?” she turned around, trying not to sound too eagerly curious.
“Uh, nothing,” he backed down as she made eye contact with him sending another jolt of unease through him.
“No, what is it?” she asked, taking a step towards him.
He swallowed. “I, uh… I dunno…”
She looked at him sceptically. “You’ve been acting different around me,” she declared slowly, “What’s…what’s going on? You look at me differently too. Like now –why are you looking at me that way?”
This was really hard. Why did it have to be so hard? Because it was Amara –that’s why and he knew it. Maybe if it was somebody else he wouldn’t feel so nervous about telling her the truth. But he didn’t want to make this thing with Amara something that ruined their friendship. They’d known each other too long and if Draco’s sudden –what should he call it: attraction; crush– on her made things awkward he wouldn’t know how to deal with it. He wasn’t sure how she would either.
“Please Drake you’re making me anxious. Just tell me; whatever it is okay?”
“Well it’s just– please just promise me that this won’t… This is really embarrassing for me to try and say so just– Try not to get too edgy about this okay?” She nodded, looking nervous too. So he went for it. “Thing is Amara I…I really like your hair back this way and I think it looks really pretty. You do you look really pretty and I just can’t shake it.” He couldn’t go on for a moment and felt the awkwardness of his statement lingering in the air between them.
“Really?” she murmured quietly, sounding like she was scared of being let down.
“Yeah…” he mumbled back, “But I just… I don’t want this to be weird `cuz it’s coming from me and…” he trailed off in speechlessness.
“It’s okay Draco.” She was smiling gently.
“It’s okay?” he repeated quietly, still sceptical.
“Yes, I think so,” she exclaimed softly.
They let a few moments pass between them. “Um,” he started gently, breaking the silence as he rubbed his hand on his neck, “Amara…” He took a step closer.
He didn’t know how to put it; how to reveal everything he was thinking and feeling in words without it sounding completely stupid. “I…” He tried to formulate what he was going to say but his mind was blank. There were no words. Draco leaned in, the distance between him and Amara growing smaller and smaller with each passing second. Finally, their lips met in a tender kiss.
Draco hadn’t consciously planned to kiss her. He was surprised at how calm he felt doing so, however.
Amara surprised herself as she realized she hadn’t tried to push away –and even now as he stood kissing her nothing told her this was weird. Instead she kissed him back, knocking him back a few steps until he ended right up against the wall beside his bedroom door.
“I’ll take that as a yes?” he murmured in embarrassed amusement as they pulled back to look at each other after letting the kiss last a few tender seconds.
She smiled shyly. “I’m sorry about that I didn’t…”
“Please don’t apologize.” He looked somewhat staggered and perhaps even flattered by her enthusiasm in kissing him back. He’d half expected her to freak out and perhaps hit him.
“So, what does this mean?” she whispered.
“I think it means…well, it means…” He was at a loss for words. “Um Amara would you like to… wanna go out together sometime?”
“Sure,” she murmured, trying not to laugh in nervousness. “Where to?”
“Uh… give me a sec –I never expected you to take this so well.”
“Gee neither did I…” she murmured.
Draco took her hand and they looked into each other’s eyes for a few moments in silence.
“I suppose I should head downstairs but I don’t know if I can right now…” she confessed quietly, slightly embarrassed.
“Too afraid to leave me already?” he jested.
“Oh c’mon Draco,” she exclaimed, slapping his shoulder with her free hand. “You can’t even take two seconds and you’re already joking about this.”
“I’m trying to joke so that I stop feeling overwhelmed. I’m… I’m so nervous but I’m kinda excited too, I– I dunno,” he admitted with an awkward smile. This was going to take some getting used to.
“Me too,” she laughed quietly still feeling slightly nervous.
Knowing she was feeling the same, Draco felt some relief come over his light-headedness. These so-called “butterflies” made him uncomfortable.
“Okay. Well uh we better get going or standing here like this,” he told her.
“Yeah, yeah.” She nodded with a tense worried look. “Okay. Well see you later then.”
“Yeah, see you.” Draco nodded and turned to walk into his room. He practically ran into the doorframe but pretended to not notice his mistake. When he was sure she was going upstairs, he peered carefully around his door and watched her as she went towards her room.
He sighed. That was the single most scary, awkward, exciting and heart-pounding several minutes of his life.
