Derick hesitated with his hands over the keys and then in sudden decision he hit a button on the keyboard and then began to play. Paige felt a shiver go up her spine as she listened to him play a song from memory, flawlessly it seemed. It was easily recognizable to her ears: ‘Waltz of the Flowers’ from ‘The Nutcracker Suite’ by Tchaikovsky. She’d long loved this tune and to hear it on piano seemed magical. She closed her eyes and pictured waltzing dancers in bright coloured skirts from the ballet spinning round and round to the music.

As Derick came to the final section of the music and slowly began to crescendo her eyes opened again as she came back to reality and realized that he had been playing all this time: Derick was playing the piano and it was utterly beautiful! She was shocked to once again realize he was playing from memory. How incredible he was!

Paige blushed as she realized that she was falling even more in love with him and as she looked at him he was looking down at his fingers and concentrating and she was pleased to think that her blush would go unnoticed. She did not know he had earlier been watching her with her eyes closed and smiling as he saw the joy and peace she was experiencing as he played. He now looked up again and smiled at her causing her to smile back and feel her cheeks grow hot. She really hoped he didn’t notice how hard she was blushing because she didn’t want to have to avert from explaining how she was utterly in love with him in this moment. He was so handsome and talented and kind and she couldn’t help but feel attracted to him more than ever now in this moment.

He finished the piece with a flourish and smiled and seconds later she clapped happily. “Derick that was-” She could barely finish her thought, overwhelmed.

“Thank you,” he grinned as he pressed something on the keyboard again and stood up. “I’m glad you liked it.”

“I loved it. You’re incredible!” she praised somewhat breathlessly.

“I accept humbly your praises. I have a question for you,” he spoke slowly and she barely had time for her nerves to rise before he asked, “May I have this dance?”
