3rd Frankenstein one-shot (Patreon)
Content
Okay y'all I based this off the Frankenstein ballet I saw (twice) in London last year that gave me feels lol. I hope you enjoy (even though I wasn't satisfied with the ending at the time). This was written about 9 months ago.
I've included a picture to prompt a visual of what the ballet's scene looked like so that you can see a little of what was in my head at the time of writing this!
Next post will be a new piece created for this theme of 'Frankenstein' and will be available to patrons only so please feel free to sign up for even $1 per month and you'll have access to that content and much more exclusive and interactive things coming up in the near future! As always, comments and questions are always welcome!
Victor
Victor stared around him appalled by the destruction wrought by the creation of his own hands. His best friend lay motionless on the stairs; strangled to death but an hour ago. Victor’s beautiful wife Elizabeth was sprawled across the floor; eyes unblinking at the ceiling nevermore to gaze into his eyes and reassure him even in the darkest of times. That had all ended when her neck had been snapped in front of him but minutes ago and the memory felt like a knife lodged in Victor’s breast never to be removed but instead to twist and turn and cause new bouts of pain and suffering. He turned to find the dark eyes of his creature upon him, the chest of this abomination heaving up and down from the exertion of the struggle that the two had just shared. Its face bore a mixture of threat and begging; an altogether frightening combination. It was like watching a child give a murderous stare; it just did not seem right by the laws of nature and yet here he saw such innocence threatening violence all in the same moment.Victor knew well that the threat was not idle; the bodies around him proved it so. And in another several seconds of contemplation, Victor realized that everyone he cared about ever in his life: his mother, his father, his young brother William, his beautiful Elizabeth, his childhood friend and confidant Justine and his best friend Henry were all gone now. He had no one to blame but himself for almost all of them had died because he had brought life to something that should have remained dead and gone. The thought of this plagued him anew –for he had had many nightmares after that fateful night of the creation of life—but now that guilt and fear fell upon him tenfold crushing him under the weight of responsibility he felt and it felt unbearable. He ought to end this creature as he should have done long ago. Victor found his hand gripping the pistol once more and it was aimed at the source of the destruction of his life. The creature looked back at him with an expression that dared him to do it; dared him to inflict violence instead of explain why he was so cruel to have made him and loathed him all this time. The young scientist’s finger pulled back on the trigger squeezing it with too little pressure to make the weapon discharge. And in those few seconds of trying with a trembling hand it became clear to Victor that the death of what he had created would do nothing. This creature had wanted him and only him and had done all of these unspeakable horrors to get Victor; to capture his attention, to make him explain, to make him pay for his treatment of this thing he had created (and abandoned to a cruel world). The creature wanted him. The thought of this both terrified and appalled Victor. He would not give into the wishes of a monster. His finger pulled on the trigger again and yet again it wasn’t enough to shoot. He could almost hear Elizabeth’s voice now in his ear asking him why he was filled with such hate. He could almost suddenly see Justine chasing Willy around as the two began laughing. He recalled the loyalty and friendship he and Henry had shared and how he had without hesitation trusted Henry with the one thing he held dearest; the life of Elizabeth and how Henry had paid the price for that. Victor could almost feel the warm embrace his father used to give him and he could almost smell the perfume his mother wore that would drift over his senses even long after she was gone. With all of this overcoming him, Victor was hit with indescribable grief that felt as though he were drowning and being suffocated under a heavy, dark blanket. All that he had ever loved in this world was gone. How could he ever be happy again? He turned away from the gaze of the thing which was not quite man and not quite animal which he had once lovingly put together and he raised the pistol to his chin. Before his creation could even contemplate what was about to happen, Victor pulled the trigger with a renewed strength of purpose for his new target. His body fell heavy to the marble floor below him landing only mere feet away from his beloved.Victor’s pain was over. His creation would not get its wish to have him or the answers it sought from him. If only Victor could have seen the way the creature pulled his limp body into its arms and cradled him, if only he could have seen the child-like expression of fear and terror on its face as it tried to get Victor’s arms to hold it back or to fight it off, if only Victor could have seen the tears it shed as it stood still holding onto Victor’s hand and faced the coming dawn. But the tragedy of Victor’s life was now over and he had not realized that there was still one living being in the world who would mourn his loss…
