first of all, lorelai looked GORGEOUS at that lunch. I mean look at her! second. Emily. ON A DATE!? that was not on my bingo card. I love how fiercely Rory is trying to protect her mom, even if a simple conversation maybe would've done the trick 🤣

The last scene of this episode breaks my heart and makes me sob like a freaking baby every single time I get to it. Kelly Bishop is such a phenomenal actress, and Emily Gilmore is such a complex character. I feel so bad for her… this part of the show is so hard for me to watch because I can’t stand seeing her and Richard not together. I really enjoyed seeing Marty in this episode. His friendship with Rory is so underrated. Her conversation with him about Christopher showing up again is one of my favorite scenes, which I know is crazy to say because you almost never hear anyone talk about it, but it matters to me because it gives us subtle insight into Rory’s unresolved issues and trauma with Christopher being an absentee father. All she ever wanted as a kid was for him and Lorelai to get back together, but when that dream shattered, it forced her to grow up, which is such great writing. I think the moment she matured about it was during that explosive Friday night dinner in season 3, when she was shutting him out and telling him that she always understands and how she didn’t want to try to understand anymore. And how she falls asleep afterward? Poor girl is exhausted from trying to hold her life together in general ☹️

I loved Rory telling Christopher off again, by the way. The fact that he has the audacity to tell her that he’s her father when he’s never even been there for her… like just shut up OMG no one wants you here!!! 😭😭😭 I just wish he’d stay away for good because his presence is clearly a threat to Lorelai and Luke’s relationship. Lorelai hid this from Luke, and she very clearly initiated this with Christopher, which stressed me out. Like girl??? What are we doing here 😅 Oh, and Rory has never once asked for anything from him. She only wanted him to do this one thing for her, and then he acts like a petulant child again and goes behind her back, as if he can get away with it if she weren’t there. She had every right to be mad at him, and I love Lorelai, but Rory was also right to be concerned about this because these things with him never end well. Lorelai can be very impulsive too, you know? She has this tendency to self-sabotage things and doesn’t realize how her words or actions can affect those around her.

Same! pretty much the rest of the season (except 1 or 2 episodes) is truly amazing and i am so excited!

Your love of T.J. faded quickly - fairs! lol

I love the comedy about Rory's seriousness re. her grandparents getting back together, contrasted by Lorelai's flippant "so, mom, do you think you are getting back together? Do you have any peanuts?" Top-notch delivery on both sides. :)

Yasemin

You have a point about lunch at the Dragonfly. Continuity was never GG's strong suit. :) So either they changed back to serving lunch, or, more likely, they chose to go with the storyline that serves the current plot, lol.

Yasemin

OMG I love your visible worry about Luke's reaction when Lorelai tells him about lunch with Christopher. :)

Yasemin

As you said recently, it's hard to guess what any ep title means, until you watch the ep. "Emily says hello" is a particularly good one, I think.

Yasemin

I agree with others on here, sooooooooo looking forward to the next ep(s)! :)

So true about lunch! It looked empty so maybe just them but seems weird she offered lunch. Also not me tearing up at Emily crying at the end. I’m such more of an easy crier since pregnancy and being in postpartum 😂

Yasemin

Good observation. Christopher does not really show up for Rory, or to be a father figure at this point.

Ari

T.J. was so funny in the episode. I didn't remember that until I rewatched it with you!

I love seeing Rory going into full best friend mode for Lorelai, she does no fuck around. Also love that Lorelai basically just takes her advice without question in the end, I'm sure that it wasn't easy to just leave Christopher hanging and not call back. She's gotta be thinking about how Rory didn't listen to her warnings about Dean and she wasn't going to make the same mistake, if her best friend tells her something is up, she listens. I totally get her calling him though, last time everything was a mess and if it still is, that's bad for Gigi and that's who's important. She also didn't want to leave him hanging like he did her when she needed help, makes total sense that she's feeling a little self-conscious about it and feels the need to call. Now that we know she's doing okay we can move on. Christopher really shouldn't have come. He should've just said he's gonna come by when he's in the area, maybe talk a little more about Gigi and hung up. It feels like half-way through the call he realized he can use Lorelai calling him as a loophole, but "she called me so it doesn't count" is not an argument to use with your college-aged daughter. If it was no big deal he would've just called Rory and asked if it's okay because Lorelai initiated. And he knows it, his reaction to Rory arriving says everything in my opinion, that was no "I'm justified to be here" that was "I got caught, I know this is bad and these are my excuses." "You didn't think I was going to be here, so, therefore, it makes it safe to come because maybe I wouldn't find out about it." I think she was 100% right. If Lorelai said that Rory was going to be there from the beginning, he wouldn't have come. --- "You just said 'Fun for now'" "Did I? I must have heard it somewhere." Love that Richard is using the most subtle and polite way to say that he was just repeating her phrase.

In my head-canon Sookie never actually let lunch go, they came to some kind of compromise and brought it back. It was a Saturday, "lunch on weekends" could be a thing.

That final scene…💔. But can we also talk about how good of an actor Kelly Bishop is in this scene?? She’s so damn good in this role❤️❤️

Scout

Same. I was trying not to comment too much so I wouldnt spoil anything but... she ain't ready. 😂👀🙊

Yasemin

She IS Emily, literally. Amazing.

Nana

i neeed next episodes fastttt

Ryann Rodkey

ooooh I'm very curious which episodes specifically 🤣

Ryann Rodkey

she's incredible!! truly, such a great actress! 🩶

Ryann Rodkey

he's truly such a hoot - annoying at times but overall very funny 😆

Ryann Rodkey

ugh seeing Emily crying like that was A LOT. especially after how much of a good time it seemed she was having, to immediately cry is such a drastic turn of emotion which is totally understandable but it really hits you!! 🩶

Ryann Rodkey

I still really enjoy T.J.! he can be a bit annoying in certain instances, but overall he's very silly 🤣

Ryann Rodkey

one of the things that annoys me THE MOST in shows is when a deadbeat dad tries to use the 'I'm your father' card. like.... actually you're not though. I was SO stressed about lorelai not telling Luke. I don't think it was an intentional thing that she was hiding, she just didn't find it to be an important thing until Rory mentioned it and then she thought about how it might look in that she didn't tell him and started panicking about it! but I was UNWELL.

Yasemin

Agreed, he's silly and can be quite fun, even when annoying :)
