there is so much grey area when it comes to this show as of late which makes for great conversation for sure! it also makes it feel more real since there is a lot of nuance in life situations too. I was shocked to my core seeing Rory walk into the diner and even more shocked with how that ended. maybe not as shocked as lorelai getting a dog though and finding out that LUKE DOESN'T LIKE DOGS. this may be the first thing I don't like about Luke. THE HORROR 😂

Yes! :) Will watch instantly.

Yasemin

I think by saying she is "on her own", they might mean the emotional side of things, rather than being completely (also financially) independent.

Luna

THE REAL STAR OF THE SHOW HAS FINALLY ARRIVED!!! EVERYBODY SAY WELCOME TO PAUL ANKA THE DOG (if you really think about it, Paul Anka is actually a symbol for a child around the house because he’s clearly there to fill the void Rory left behind, but he’s easily the greatest thing to ever happen on the show lol you’re gonna have so much fun with that little guy, and he’s there to make you feel better considering the rift between Rory and Lorelai)

Luna

Fun fact: Alexis Bledel’s first language is Spanish, and she didn’t learn English until she went to school. She was also trying so hard to sound non-fluent in her scene with the maid, Esperanza lol. You can even hear a hint of her real accent slipping through at times.

Yasemin

Alexis Bledel (Rory) is a native Spanish speaker btw. I also think that scene is cute, and especially when she tries hard to sound like a non-native, but still, her pronunciation gives her away. :)

Luna

Honestly, one of my favorite sad scenes of the entire show is in this episode. It’s the one with Rory and Luke, when she finds out that he and Lorelai got engaged. Alexis’s performance is so subtle but so heartbreaking because Rory has probably been waiting her whole life for her mom and the one stable guy she sees as a father figure to get hitched. I don’t know why I think about this scene so much, but it just means a lot to me. Rory was also clearly indirectly trying to check on her mom, and she knows she messed up, but she wanted to make sure that things were at least good between her and Luke. He’s the only one who will always be there for both of them if they ever needed anything, which leads me to the following point: He was so right when he told Lorelai that they were both acting dumb. Lorelai had her time to mess up back then, and she’s supposed to be the adult or parent here, so Rory is more than allowed to make the wrong decisions now in order to figure things out, but she also needs structure, proper guidance, and a shit ton of therapy because what she did was not okay. Anyway, I feel like this time apart will do them both some good because they’re so codependent that it’s actually unhealthy. Oh, and I hate that Luke is in the middle… he shouldn’t be. I was on his side here.

Yasemin

It's fair that they are both hurt, however, they are not besties (even if the show portrays them that way), but mom and daughter, so I would expect a bit more of a mature attitude from Lorelai..but then, she also got stuck in her teens, for understandable reasons.

Yasemin

Yes, it hurts Lorelai that Rory is staying at her parents' place; however, it's not like Rory chose that with the intention to hurt her mom. She was told that she couldn't come home if she was taking a break from Yale, and didn't know of any other option in that moment.

Yasemin

Haha! I was curious about your reaction to "Luke not liking dogs". Fairs! :) Give him a chance, though, he may come around. :)

Bruce

This is an important episode. We have the introduction of Paul Anka, and Luke’s mini-review of the Star Wars prequel movie, Revenge of the Sith. Luke apparently didn’t realize the crucial importance of having ‘the high ground’. 😂😂

fire12wife

Alexis Bedel was only faking that she didn't speak much Spanish. Actually, Spanish is her first language! Her mother was born in Arizona, but was raised in Mexico! Her father was born in Argentina! Alexis started speaking English in preschool and kindergarten. She was a freshman in college when she got the role of Rory!

TheLoungingPotato

I don't think Rory realized back when she decided to move in with Richard and Emily that it would hurt Lorelai THIS much, to the point of just cutting her own daughter out. Lorelai keeps calling it "tough love" but there's no love in that. She's hurt and she's avoiding Rory because it's easier for her than to just accept Rory's decisions. She wanted to give Rory the autonomy to make her own decisions but then villainizes her for them. Some decisions require that, yes, but Rory spiraling is not something that she did to spite her mother. It's so frustrating how Lorelai has reacted to all of this. But at the same time, it makes sense for her character. I just wish she had the maturity to form a middle ground where she didn't have to force her daughter to feel so alone in all of this Also, ughhhhh I forgot how...straight up bigoted Emily can be sometimes. Rewatching it with you made me remember. How DARE Rory treat the help like an actual human being! Disgusting! That's beneath them! Rory might as well be spitting on the Gilmore name

Karolina Hołub

Fully agree with that! That's why I really struggle with Lorelai this episodes, tbh more than Rory, even tho both of them are clearly lost. In my opinion as a mother you should be able to be a better person, even when your child is grow up. This is for me is not mature behavior. But I also agree it makes sense for her character and just because she is not perfect, doesn't mean she is bad. Just lost.

Ryann Rodkey

I’m so excited about the dog! I need to watch Star Wars I think- there are always so many references to it in other media that I never fully grasp!

Ryann Rodkey

I just think we’ve very rarely seen Lorelai be mature so this entire situation isn’t shocking. And while they are mother and daughter- the entire show they’ve been best friends first, so to me, this does make sense for the characters. As disappointing as it is!

Yasemin

Totally! They are portrayed as best friends, which is kind of the premise of the show. It does make sense. But it's mostly codependency. :)

Yasemin

I am curious, what did you think Rory was doing, in that scene just before she speaks Spanish with the maid? You were saying "Rory, what are you doing" over and over :), that threw me off a bit. As if expecting something wild to happen? And also, when that girl pushed her during community service, she pushed back, which I kinda understand how that developed...

Ryann Rodkey

For the most part I agree- but I can’t help but keep thinking about the scene where Lorelai is standing outside of the pool house and Rory is unpacking, stares at her and then continues going about her business. That felt like she was trying to hurt her to me. That is when the communication was cut off. Lorelai was fully planning on seeing her and talking to her that night. But Rory left her grand parents to deliver the news which she knew would hurt Lorelai even more than if she had told her herself. Then proceeded to not come out and speak to her at all when she was standing there, just went about her business. I’m not saying that what Lorelai is doing here and continuing to do is right- but Rory is also playing a part in the downfall of

Yasemin

Totally! There is no "love" in the "tough love". There is mostly just her own pain, but the love for Rory is not to be felt.

Ryann Rodkey

Yes! It makes total sense for Lorelai’s character to act this way for sure. I understand not talking to her for a tiny bit bc you’re hurt- totally makes sense. But when she was engaged she should’ve reached out. It is a bit interesting bc it does seem to me like Rory doesn’t want to be in contact with her. She’s having her grand parents be the go between for any and all communication and that seemed to be Rory’s choice bc Richard and Emily delivered the news, not Rory. Rory could’ve said ‘no I should also be there’ or ‘I should tell her’ but she let them do it, knowing that would hurt. I don’t blame Lorelai for not reaching out after that and I do think that it’s up to Rory to kind of bridge that gap in communication if she wants bc everything was pointing to her not wanting to talk to Lorelai anymore. But when the engagement happened, Lorelai should’ve called.

Ryann Rodkey

Interesting- I know some characters are pointing to Logan but I don’t think any of the comments I saw were blaming him! 🩶

Yasemin

I think Rory was thrown off by her own mom saying "you cannot come home". I don't see it as her strategically avoiding Lorelai and choosing Richard and Emily to be her buffer. It developed that way because she must have been very hurt by her mom practically telling her "I do not respect your choice, and as long as you don't go to Yale, you cannot come home". Conditional love? Lorelai never reminds me more of Emily than in this storyline.

Yasemin

An acceptable spoiler, and yes :)

Ryann Rodkey

Lmao GREAT QUESTION! I 100% thought she was going to steal the little sewing kit or whatever it was that Logan had tried to take when he was over for dinner. Lol idk why I thought that. But I felt like she was kind of acting a little odd and I thought she was going to snatch it and bring it to him lol

TheLoungingPotato

I think Rory is avoiding Lorelai more so out of underlying shame and maybe even a bit of hurt that she’s spiraling and Lorelai wasn’t there to help her in a way that Rory needed I think both of them are definitely being stubborn about it and need to sit down and actually talk it through, but I personally feel this one is more on Lorelai Her daughter is clearly going through a huge rough patch, one that caused her to feel like she had to throw away the future she had been planning for her entire life. It’s clearly illogical and incredibly impulsive, which should be a good indicator that she wasn’t herself and needed Lorelai to be there. Not in support or judgement, but just to be there when she falls But this feels like a very natural rift for both of them, so it is unfortunately good writing despite how frustrating it is to watch them both push the other away because of how they’ve hurt each other in their own ways haha

Yasemin

Fair point. I think Rory did not come out because she was hurt herself, as her mom played the "conditional love" card.

Ryann Rodkey

Yeah totally. It’s such a difficult situation bc I think Lorelai would’ve supported her if her decision was bc she needed a break and had genuinely changed her mind. But her stopping bc of the Mitchum thing is why I think Lorelai pushed so hard. Like don’t just give up on something you’ve always wanted bc one person said you don’t have it.

Yasemin

OMG that is hilarious. :) I hope you can cut her some slack moving forward. :)

TheLoungingPotato

Oh, I completely agree with that mentality. I don’t think one person’s opinion should define you changing your entire dream and the future you’ve been working towards But I think because it was a reaction based ENTIRELY on emotion, it should have been met the same way. I think Lorelai rightfully panicked that Rory was just suddenly pausing her entire future and wanted to fight back with a plan and action. But Rory just wasn’t in the right headspace for action I don’t blame Lorelai for not initially realizing that though. You hear your prodigy kid wanting to take a break from college because one person pushed back against her dream and you wanna fix the problem immediately. But this wasn’t something that could be solved then and there because Rory was so deep already in her emotional spiral. Logical solutions were out the window at that point. I just wish once the dust settled that things could have been handled differently

Luna

Omg I didn’t realize this could be a spoiler because I thought it was obvious the dog was staying lol I’m so sorry

Karolina Hołub

I think in all this situation the main problem is, and it is clearly shown - Rory is in crisis. Lorelai is in criris only because Rory is in crisis. It just seem unfair to me, to not be able to put yourself together when your child is in emotional crisis like that. No matter if we think this is right to react to situation like that this strongly, it is clearly shown that this put her in the mental spiral. Sometimes this is not logical, sometimes things that put us on mental breakdown are looking absurd from outside. I actually think this comment was a trigger after years of insecurity that Rory already had. I know she didnt express it ever, but it was actually hinted at quit a few times - that she doesnt fully have that bravery and spark to be journalist out in the world. This was something she was buring inside her, and this one comment just brought it up to life. In my opinion, Lorelai as a mother should see it and try to support Rory. She doesnt have to agree with her decision, she can draw boundries, of course, but the issue is - Lorelai is also not acting with a clear mind here, she is driven by her emotion in each step on the way. I can sympathze with it, but not the same way i sympathize with Rory. The issue is, with interaction with her daugher it is jus wrong. Again, you HAVE TO be a better person. Even in conversation with Luke there she is not even hiding the fact, that she is trying to "teach Rory lesson" by not telling her about something that important, she is trying to make her pay, because she hurt her feeling. Rory didnt try to hurt Lorelai (at least in my opinion, I think she knew it would hurt her, but it was not her intention, she was just too weak to face her), but Lorelai clearly admits that this is what she wants to do. Revenge is just not a way to treat your child, even if you are rightfully upset. Especially if you see that your child is not doing it out of spite, she is doing it because she is spiriling and making rushed decision because she feel alone and lost. And you make her feel more alone and lost. This is why Rory acted out during community service. I am not saying this as excuse, she SHOULD be able to control herself better, she cannot just act out when she is upset and she needs to take punishment for her action. However - cutting out love and emotional support is not a fair punishment ever.

Karolina Hołub

Not me writing whole essey 😅 But this topic really gets me going because I am Rory defender this season soo much in contrary to popular opinions.

Karolina Hołub

May I just add one thing - the writing on this show is amazing, to put out such a complex storyline that actually fully makes sense when we look back at seasons that were building up to that big conflict. So much niuanse and signs to look for. This is why i miss long tv shows - now almost all of them are this high quality but super short tv shows with one clear message, but oftentimes nothing deepr under, and how could it be, if you are telling story in 8 episodes per season 😔

Ryann Rodkey

Omg no you’re totally fine!! I’m super excited about it!

Yasemin

@Karolina, agreed! The older I get, the more I can see Rory's situation, and I hate how Lorelai handles this. It does not matter to me WHY Rory did what she did, but as you say, she is in crisis mode, and needs to be listened to. Lorelai is acting in "heavy-handed ways" and it's uncalled for. Healthy boundaries are something else!

Nana

girlll drop those Gilmore Girls epss nowww plsss

AlecSinWonderland

I remember watching for the first time Alexis speak Spanish then hearing her say “Ah, si?” And immediately thinking, Oh! That’s a native speaker!! lol anyhow… That scene with Emily, Rory, and the maid was the moment it clicked for me just how miserable it must’ve been growing up in that house. We already know Emily can be nagging, overbearing, and dismissive, but those traits alone never seemed enough to explain Lorelai’s desperate need to escape. That scene did. Lorelai is a naturally warm, friendly, and genuinely caring person towards people regardless of status. Qualities Emily often looks down on or suppresses. For the first time, I understood why Lorelai felt she couldn’t raise a baby in that environment. Even if it meant facing homelessness. Suddenly, her reaction didn’t seem extreme at all. It made me realize that what Lorelai carries from her childhood is closer to trauma than simple resentment.
