I don't think you guys noticed that the last player Beth beat was Dudley (Harry Potter's cousin). There's definitely been a big leap forward in time, and I struggled to adjust to it at first too but eventually, you realize it was necessary. About the mother, I think she's simply depressed and that's why she's so disconnected from everything. It could be because of reasons like losing a child or her crumbling marriage. Also, considering the time period (based on her comments), women didn’t work back then. The series is super intriguing, and everything unfolds little by little with each episode!

Hello, it is the early 1960s for this episode. Clues are: clothing styles, cars, and the news mentions President Kennedy, who was elected in 1960 and was killed in Nov 1963.

This show is so good, really enjoying these reactions!!!

Beth Harmon is totally a Pudgey character right...

Gladyx

I think this show does such a great job creating believable and non-stereotypical characters, especially considering it's just a mini series. Alma is a good example: She has both lovable and questionable traits within her personality and behavior. Or Beltik, who is portrayed as a typical douchebag during their game, but revealed to be a good sportsman after all when he applauds Beth for her victory.

Terry Maturo

Forgot how good this series is. Glad you guys are reacting to it.

Early 1960s wasn't anywhere near as advanced as the 1970s if one could call it advanced. Lots of civil rights were fought for and enacted in the mid to late 1960s. Unfortunately some really good leaders has to die before some were realized. My mom's mother had a job in the 50s and early 60s as a baker. My mom did secretarial work in the early 60s then she became a teacher in the 70s. Besides those jobs there weren't many others besides nurses. Not everyone woman went to university back then either. . I think Alma was broken from losing her child. She won't even talk about it. The one telling thing she said after she told Beth her husband wasn't coming home was that she was a housewife. That was her identity. Without Beth I am afraid she would have completely lost herself. Being a mother to Beth is a sincere goal of Almas and though she may be taking too many pills or drinking, she does have some sense of purpose now.

Lyn Hurst

I like that she isn't afraid to ask and is not self-conscious in doing so.

Hating hard AF on the mom

One thing becomes apparent - Beth doesn't make friends easily. The other girl in the school cafeteria is another 'loner' like Beth and tries to engage Beth in conversation because she herself is an outsider. The chess player in Beth's first tournament shows compassion towards Beth but it isn't reciprocated. Instead, Beth focuses on becoming a little more stylish to improve her standing among the popular girls, even if she doesn't like them.

Completely agree! I like that Spartan pointed out the similar nuance with the orphanage last episode.

Well she did come across a bit sus this episode with some words/actions. Give em time

In the year 1960, about 29% of college students in the United States were women. This percentage increased over time, and by 2010, women made up 57% of college students. Just for anyone curious. Yep definitely was not common.

I decided to look this up out of curiosity: In the year 1960, about 29% of college students in the United States were women. This percentage increased over time, and by 2010, women made up 57% of college students. As far as percentage of women that worked: In 1950, the overall participation rate of women was 34%. The rate rose to 38% in 1960, 43% in 1970, 52% in 1980, and 58% in 1990 and reached 60% by 2000. 59% in 2023. This of course does not account for the types of jobs or nature of jobs. Women were much more limited in occupational choice back then, due to various cultural and social elements, so also something to keep in mind.

♥ this show! My tranquility needs to be refurbished - still use that line! :D This show is flawless!

Yea exactly, I was sus of the mom too when I first watched this episode. But rewatching it I realize she has no idea how to keep Beth because she clearly doesn’t want to send her back, by stating they could lie about the divorce so she can stay. But she has no one in her life and no way to financially take care of Beth. I think she sees this as the answer to everything, it’s the first time she and Beth can do something fun together and enjoy life, money for them to survive, and a fun unique thing for them to bond over. And to Spartans comment sure she could potentially get a job but she would barely be making a couple bucks a week. And Beth wouldn’t be able to make this trip on her own so she needs her mom and her mom needs her. I think their relationship is actually so awesome because they are both the only person the other one has, and they both equally need each other to stay alive

Spencer Parks

It was not at all unrealistic to have Beth pick up the cigarettes for her mother with just a note. At that time, people were not concerned about minors smoking or drinking as much and things were more relaxed. My dad used to do this all the time as a kid for his family.

Mantis

Not sure how you got the impression we were in the 70's.......the first scene of the series with a grown up Beth in France was in 1967, then went back about 10 years or so to the mid-late 50's, so we are likely in the early-mid 60's here.
