Content

Hey Everyone,

We are always keeping our eyes on the feedback we receive and aim to improve our content experience as much as possible for our community. One of the most common complaints we receive is that our uncut reactions don't have the show playing in its entirety like our edited reactions do, for those who cant sync up a copy of their own show.

Now many reaction channels do this, we are aware. However, we have sought out some legal advice about fair use and copyright laws in Australia alongside reaching out to Patreon's terms of service support and discussing with some larger creators. This correspondence has allowed us to consider providing an "uncut" reaction with the full screen of the show - similar to our Youtube reaction size - due to the level of analysis, discussion and commentary that we provide on our channel. This will not replace the "uncut" style we currently provide, it will be an additional product, as we know many people prefer syncing up their version.

We are asking for community feedback, is this something you would be interested in us considering? We will consider what we feel comfortable in doing of course, especially due to the "greyness" of copyright laws. However, we do feel more confident with the legal advice given to us and as a result are lead to understand that this venture would be "low risk" for us as creators. Additionally, the fact that a majority of the reaction space has already does this for years also settles our minds. Please let us know your thoughts in the comments down below!

Wes

Absolutely yes!

Fonzee

Yes, this would be great for longer content when you have to pause to do something or use the bathroom then have to resync everything.

Kat and Kaizo

I've seen this before and loved it. It's nice to not bother with syncing lol

John Malone

This would be INCREDIBLE.

Michael Short

I am personally against it, due to it being illegal. But I won't stop supporting you because of it, as long as you provide a version that I can sync up to, like you said you would :)

Paul

As long as there is no risk for your channel and patreon, it'd be a great addition!

YoureMrLebowski

That would be a welcome plus, thank you.

Fuzzy Dunlop

I can confirm they sought legal advice. I am Spartan's attorney.

Bill B.

I am on a few patreons, and most of them - from the US to the UK - use full screen for uncut reactions. I’ve also noticed two of them trend slowly from showing half screen, sometimes blanking the screen, to full blown showing all of the video. If your legal advice believes this is OK, … hopefully it’s a Kim Wexler and not a Saul Goodman … I would say go for it. I would happily upgrade a tier for this too.

spartanandpudgey

well speaking to our Lawyer, she was fairly confident in saying that under 'commentary' and 'discussion' fair use law, that we should be protected quite well and thus making it more 'legal' although we understand fair use can be a grey area. either way we are thankful for your support <3

ButtercupsTrueLove

Not sure if the "majority" of other reaction channels really do provide the full-length uncut source material, because none of the others that I subscribe to on Patreon do this. I don't know if those others are just being cautious or if they've had problems in the past with copyright issues. I'm a little leery of encouraging you to do this but if it works for you then I'll hope for the best.

Michael Short

It might be a bit of a grey area. Although I do know YouTube frowns upon it (although since you're posting it on Patreon YouTube's ToS doesn't matter. As you said, many do it. :) either way, as long as I can continue to sync up, I have no intention of leaving due to it.

Julien

🙄

Michael Short

You can roll your eyes all you want mate. :) like I said, I'm not going to unsub due to it, but I'm allowed my own views

Julien

Of course we want this. I've wanting this for years but you were quite terrified of legal issues so I left it alone. This would be a very welcome addition.

Franky E

Same… I mean this is anecdotal and I probably don’t follow a lot of reaction channels compared to other people, but among the ~10 or so I have subscribed to over the years, I don’t recall full uncut reactions showing the source material. I think there has been one, but they did not include the audio. I feel like it might be more effort than its worth

Timothy

Yes another major YT channel just did the same for their patreon and it's is so freaking amazing to watch that way. If Legal then please bless us with the full unedited versions!!

Richard B

A Canadian channel just started doing it, basically giving the same explanation. It helps with movies with different variations or one that isn't available in your area.

Chris B

Many channels do this: Badd Medicine, Nick reacts, Rob & Trin, CocoaCouch, Lexi Crowd and recently Cinebinge started too. From a viewers perspective, I support creators with the full picture more as it's just so much easier not having to find, download, sync etc. But, that said, of course triplecheck you won't have consequences from this. Some creators who do the full picture do it on Patreon itself, some provide a link to another site like Streamable.

Jessi

I've noticed several very popular reactors heading this way. There's just too much else for the world to worry about, I guess.

DRIP DROP

Only reason I like it is because you can actually focus on the reactors reaction better since its right there. With how it currently is, I find myself watching the show sometimes and not even looking at my phone

Simon

Personally I prefer having my own non compressed version of the movie/show playing along with your reactions, just because I really like my movies/shows to look as pretty as possible. But as long as this new format will be an addition, rather than a replacement of the current format, then I'm not against this idea. PS: Eagerly awaiting the return of movie reactions :D

Fuzzy Dunlop

As your attorney, I would strongly advise against creating a digital trail of your threats of kidnapping and false imprisonment. I will send you a bill for this advice.

Kev Martin

I'd love to hear how any legal advice seriously gives this the OK. Its not the same as YouTube, because on YouTube you don't provide people with someone else's property, in its entirety. Yes, I saw Cinebinge just announced this too, and gave the exact same reasoning. I don't buy it. If the IP owners get even a hint that they are losing any money due to this, they will come down on you HARD. All they have to do is issue a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) claim against you, then Patreon have no option but to take the content down, and then ask you to prove that you have the rights to the material (which you don't). Sorry but the whole "its commentary so we can give away other people's property" line doesn't pass the pub test (as we say in Oz). I suggest you talk to some creators who have lost their channels due to copyright issues, then reconsider. A poll asking people if they want something essentially for free will always be heavily skewed. Try running a poll asking if people want to run the risk of losing their favourite channel, just so they don't have to bother syncing up their own copy. Just hoping this doesn't bite you in the arse S&P.

spartanandpudgey

we are open and appreciative of all opinions/perspectives, so no worries. we are and will be taking this under consideration as much as anything else.

Roy Koopa

Are you a lawyer?

Eli Wilson

This makes it much easier to watch and be locked in on y’all reactions while also enjoying the show fully. I have enjoyed the versions with full episodes on the reactions as in BADD Medicine and Cinema Gek. They both do this option and I tend to enjoy those more than synced uncut reactions. Either way, I will continue to be here for all the shows I love. <3

Melody Netherton

I will upgrade my subscription for this! Thank you for listening! Would you consider upgrading your oldrer reactions to this format eventually?

DRIP DROP

Always gotta be one lol

Cindy Beach

My personal experience has been that the majority of channels I pay for do the full reaction, and have been doing so for literally years. Some do put a watermark filter over the video, while others is just full coverage. I know some use a 3rd party player that opens such as Vimeo or other platform which adds a layer of “fair use”. A degree of separation so to speak. I only take the time to watch the full length with sync if it’s a really big episode because it’s a royal pain to pause and restart both versions if I’m interrupted for any reason. Just my thoughts!

Andrew R

Even if it's legal, it doesn't mean the studios won't hassle you. At one point White Noise reacts were forced to delete all of their reactions due to this format (they are now defunct for other reasons). Popcorn in Bed lost access to her google drive, for a period, that only had the blurred/muted reactions. The studios presumably flagged the reactions based on their titles alone. It's a risk either way. All I'll say is if the reacter's voices are swamped by the movie audio the format is useless. Doubly so if the reaction is not in sync with the movie. Several channels I know have suffer from those issues (and they don't offer the blurred/non-synced version, it's madness!)

Kev Martin

Here's a wild card to throw into the mix - we all hear a lot about how AI is exploding in growth and about to change the world in the coming months. Every major company is scrambling to find ways to make it work for them - to improve their bottom line. For companies like Netflix, Warner, Disney etc, that will undoubtedly include releasing AI-powered bots to find all the channels giving away their content for free. Then they will calmly destroy them. Because they can. I can't believe the shit isn't going to hit the fan in a big way.

Lyn Hurst

Well allo Fuzzy Dunlop, Esq.

Michael Short

I'm not. My brother in law is, albiet he is a criminal defence attorney, not a copyright lawyer. He confirms Kev's statement. He said he wouldn't give this advice.

Kev Martin

No, but the DMCA stuff is very common knowledge to anyone who works in any industry that deals with intellectual property. Its basically how copyright enforcement has worked on the Internet since the late 90s. I've had to deal with it for various issues.

Bryce Nielsen

Honestly, I'd talk to the guys over at the Reel Rejects about this. I know they have had issues over the past year with some of the big companies hitting them with multiple takedown notices, specifically because of something similar to this topic. I personally wouldn't want to see this. It's crossing into a real grey zone in terms of legality, and the last thing I would want to see is more reaction channels running into takedown issues because the people who own these films decide to start cracking down on reaction channels across the board.

Michael Short

I called my criminal defence attorney brother in law about this. He said while you might not get caught doing this, it's definitely illegal and could result in your channel being deleted. I won't unsub if you choose to go ahead, but I felt it only right to pass this on, because I'd hate to see you have your account removed like so many other channels

A L

Honestly don't think you should change it. Your current setup works perfectly. You could potentially do what the Normies do with theirs, which is leave the video going the whole time like on the edited version, but it's blurred out after the first 30 seconds or so. That allows you enough time to sync with your own version, while also making it easier to stay in sync.

Evan

The only thing I'll say is that it is a risk. It's up to you guys if you are comfortable taking that risk. As others have said, there are a decent amount of reactors that do this and have had no problems, but there are also some who have had problems and it put their patreon in jeopardy. There's a decent chance you won't have any issues, but as long as you do it, there is always a chance you will. I know one reactor that had been doing this for years with no problem, but one day they were literally forced to take down all of their videos. Regardless of the legality, no ip holder will ever be ok with this and they always win these battles. All it takes is for one to notice. I personally don't have any issue one way or the other, but just keep this in mind if you do decide to go this route. That being said, it is a good idea having both versions to safeguard in case you have to take down your videos.

Bill B.

Don’t trust Fuzzy until he fully explains the train station incident! 😀

Siel sielll

yes please!!! it makes it so much easier for people that watch on phone, aslong as you guys are safe doing so!

Josip Buretić

I am subscribed to 8 channels here on patreon and they all do have uncut reactions and some of them are doing it for years and they don't have any problems, but if course you should what is best for you guys. I mean the uncut version is the best one for us because we can focus on reaction and you guys. But like I said please do what is the best for you guys

James

I find it super easy to sync up with you guys. But if you're able to safely do it this way, then why not!

Michael Short

Not according to lawyers. And how do you explain all the channels who have had their channels deleted lately?

Julien

@Kev Martin: S&P did NOT ask any of us for legal advice. They are grown ass adults who can handle that part on their own (and obviously have). As successful reactors, they have access to all the knowledge base (from the reactor community) and legal advice they need. So this is not the place to re-litigate their willingness to offer this content. All S&P asked us is if WE want this content. The answer from most of us is a resounding "yes." If don't want it, it is literally as simple as not watching it.

Tim

I haven’t had any problems syncing up

Alexandria

I came here to say just that. I wouldn’t risk it.

Alexandria

I wouldn’t risk it. It’s not worth having your entire channel shut down. It may be a legal gray area, but studios have the money and resources to fight you over it. And they will.

Ego Jinpachi

One extra perk of having the video included in the reaction, is that if you (or us viewers) ever need to pause the video to discuss or whatever else, re-syncing mid-episode won't be a problem at all.

Ego Jinpachi

Carlie and Ange do this, but they do it on other platforms not youtube (vimeo I think it is?) so that if it gets taken down by copyrights or whatever else, a vimeo video is easier to reupload and without "strikes" that you might get if that was done on youtube instead. Of course, the safe route if you don't want to ever try to "innovate" is to continue the same way things currently are.

Yoshio

I think you’re doing it perfectly as is, no issues with syncing for me. I’d be concerned that if a studio had an issue at some point they might require you to take down those reactions. A first reaction isn’t something you can redo.

spartanandpudgey

We would be providing both the syncing up version and non syncing up

Kev Martin

"Fair Use" generally does NOT include redistributing the entirety of a creative work. I just did an AI deep dive on the topic out of curiousity and that's one of the key takeaways. Another is that the work doesn't offer a replacement for the original work (meaning someone could come to the channel to watch the movie instead of paying Netflix or HBO or whoever). "Fair Use" doesn't mean you can do whatever you want, because that just seems "fair" to you.

Kev Martin

Oops. Look out, the Gatekeeper's here to tell me what I can and can not contribute to the conversation. Thanks so much for your help. #sarcasm

Fleshtotem

I'd love this, syncing up is annoying for me since i often take breaks or have to deal with something that comes up and its annoying to resync perfectly

Duder03

I feel like if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I guess it can be annoying at times to sync. But I'd rather put up with that, than having your channel removed. Not worth the risk if you ask me.

Leo

Not a lawyer in Australia so can't be certain of the risks - but if this ever came to a lawsuit and you had distributed hundreds of TV episodes to thousands of people you would be fucked forever. That is a life-ruining amount of money to have to pay some license holders if worst came to worst. I personally would never take on that kind of risk, but you guys do you. I suppose it'll save me 2m of editing the two videos together and 10m of exporting, so that's cool.

temsik28

Tips for current style. You can pause/pause... unpause/ unpause in the same order and tempo to keep synch when taking a break. If you need to close browser note times on both videos to get it close again. If it is just a bit off you can use the blur.. watch for scene changes, movements, or color changes.

Draethius

Watching the full show in the reaction is convenient for /viewers/, but I'm not going to vote for something that could get you in trouble. Syncing is just fine with me and it seems you've gotten by this far in doing it this way.

temsik28

No opinion on changing it. I'm sure the would help some people. Only downside might be if they change rules and you have to undo the new videos. But should be easy if you keep the blurred versions also. Edit: also like the guy below mentioned maybe they do change rules and go for compensation after the fact. Hard to predict when it comes to a company squeezing some extra $$$$ out of the system.

Edward M. Crowe

Just one suggestion I would make. First I am a lawyer and agree with some of the others on exercising caution. The Patreon channels I follow use a blur of about 70% and ask the viewer to sync with their own copy. Also, they said they ensure the audio can't leak through. (I said once I could hear the audio from the movie, and they said it was from their headphones leaking through to their speaking mic, and they would fix that for copyright purposes). The SUGGESTION I have is: I follow Bunnytails on Discord, as well as on Patreon, and we have a fun night every month with a live movie "watch-along", where members log on and we all watch a movie together. It's in the "Patreon-Voice" channel. We get two screens: she has her reaction on one screen, and the movie plays on another screen. You can zoom out and see all the members screens plus hers AND the movie, or zoom in to just watch the movie, or just watch her reaction. But it's always the entire original movie, no blurring, etc. And we especially have fun commenting back and forth to each other in the live "Chat" screen that displays beside the movie screen ("Movie sucks!" -- "No it's great" -- "Sucks" -- "No, great" -- Ha ha!). It's a pretty small crowd -- we only get about 15-20 viewers per session. I don't know if that would have anything to do with it or not? But it's GREAT fun, especially interacting live with the other movie watchers and Bunny as we go along, and I'm sure your patreons would love this to! I just joined your Discord channel to check if you do this (I'm "Teddy Bear"), and no, I can't see that you are doing this already. But it would solve your immediate problem of using the original uncut movie content with a reaction. So skip over to Bunnytails to find out more. If you message her on her Discord or BunnytailsREACTS channels, I'm sure she would be glad to exchange info about copyright too. Have a great week ...

Kev Martin

One what? Person who disagrees with you?

Greg K

Every video of Carlie and Ange I have watched cut some of the video off every once in a while and leave the captions/blur they dont just paste the entire video straight up

Redoculus

I think syncing up your own copy should be required for full length reactions, the original content should be supported and showing the full video would definitely be against copyright law in many countries, especially those without "fair use".

Kev Martin

Unfortunately for many people, fair use means whatever they can get away with.

Dasypodidae

Did I read it correctly that you make one video of your copy and the uncut reaction, and do this in 2 minutes? How do you do this?

Black Boye

Kind of agree with some people here. Whilst for ease it would be nice to just click and watch without needing to sync my own version up, there is a grey area when it comes to fair use but it might not be worth risking it especially as you do eventually provide both full reactions and uncut! I vote leave it as it is but its up to you guys though 💪🏽❤️

yemmlie

This will be awesome, tho i personally don't mind syncing too much esp with my fold phone. Just definitely keep the existing ones as fallback, some people in comments are talking about danger to S&P, fines or whatever but am very sceptical of that, I think the main concern is blocked or dmca takedowns, potentially automated (def can't use youtube and def def not main channel), as if you ever have a takedown happen of particular usually random episodes of older shows it really sucks for new patreons when you get a season into a show then a random ep just isn't there so having sync along as a backup a big deal i think

Yusuf

I am used to syncing about the vids and I have multiple monitors which makes it easier. However, when I have to pause, it can be a bit of pain to re-sync when I come to the video. So, I do prefer the option to have your reaction and the video you are reacting to in one video.

TeddyBearBonfire

I know you said in the post that you wouldn't replace your sync-up version, but even so I just want to add that I value that, in case you were to change your mind down the line. Nothing disappoints me more than subscribing to a Patreon account only to find out that their uncuts have the video and audio embedded in their reaction, because then I have no control over video position or volume levelling. For example, watching along with your reactions, I have the show playing on a 2nd monitor, your reaction on monitor 1, then I have a scene in OBS to position the video somewhere on the same screen as your reaction—then on monitor 2, I can scroll wheel up/down to control volume of the show on the fly, which means when the show is quiet, I can turn it up to be more in line with your commentary voices, and when it is bombastic with loud music or whatever, I can turn it down again and still hear you—this is *necessary* for so many shows with a lot of contrast between quiet and loud moments, and it's something you as a viewer simply *cannot* do with an embedded reaction. Do note also that *despite* any grey area on embedded uncut reactions with the full episode showing, Patreon *does* remove them when they get reported. I've seen a number of channels here and there lose a lot of their reactions because of that. They might have eased up on it (maybe not, I don't know), but it was happening frequently a couple years ago. So to reiterate, I don't personally care whether you introduce a fully-embedded reaction format or not, but I'm only here for uncuts with syncing, and I don't sub to channels that don't have them. So even though you said you won't replace that—please don't change your mind! (Also please don't let it delay your release timing! Would suck if it pushes your release batches even later in the day because you have to wait for a third format to be rendered and ready—I appreciate that you often release reactions at like 10pm or 11pm GMT, makes me able to catch them before bed a lot of the time! :D)

TeddyBearBonfire

Yeah, losing old episodes is a huge problem. I don't follow reaction series' with gaps in their reactions, so it's killed a lot of potential channels for me. Just one example of many, but I remember being so excited for Jimmy Macram's Battlestar Galactica reactions, only to end up finding he's had some key episodes removed (maybe Season 1 finale or something? Can't quite recall, been years). Would've been happy to just sync up and watch along with the bare reaction (actually, I much prefer it—better viewer experience from a control/volume-levelling PoV), but that wasn't an option, so I stopped watching. Had no idea if the same problem would recur later in his reaction series or with other shows, so it was easier just stop watching and not to get invested in his reactions.

TeddyBearBonfire

Agree tbh. It's kind of a "having your cake and eating it too" scenario. If you are watching full-length reactions rather than edits, there are two main scenarios—you're an enthusiast of the show and want to see people make the full journey, including bits that are interesting to enthusiasts but maybe slow or too subtle to make an edit cut that casual fans would be happy with; OR you are looking for an easy way to watch the full show without acquiring it legitimately. In the first case, as enough of an enthusiast to warrant watching the full length, I think you should be quite content with using a legitimate copy and syncing up. In the second case, well, providing for that is how channels will get into trouble. And it's absolutely been the case that Patreon has taken down posts for this in the past, even if a lot of other channels fly under the radar.

TeddyBearBonfire

I don't know his method, but sounds like he just throws both into a video editing software, positions the show frame however he prefers, and exports to produce a single file. It would certainly only take a minute or two to do that when you're familiar with the process. Personally, I use OBS and create a scene with the browser window with the reaction in it as the full-screen frame, and my media player as a smaller frame over the top. I then hit play on both the browser and the media player, pausing whichever is ahead and unpausing it when they sync up (usually at a frame transition, makes an easy sync point). No exporting needed and you can still change the volume of either the reaction or the show on the fly if one (usually the show) gets super loud or quiet at certain moments.

TeddyBearBonfire

@DRIP DROP Fair use is a *defence* (meaning it only becomes relevant after legal action is pursued—it cannot prevent legal action in the first place), and the idea that showing the full episode is going to be covered by that defence with relatively minimal commentary over the top (considering the main commentary in a good reaction is saved for the post-episode discussion) is frankly absurd, particularly when it has been shown that it is equally practical for such purposes not to include and simply have the viewers sync up. In truth, it's very unlikely to come to legal action either way, and the biggest risk is in Patreon deleting posts or the channel if they get reported enough times (some channels have been hit with this, many have not—it's a gamble) rather than legal consequences. But don't cite inapplicable defences.

engraved

i have absolutely no idea on copyright law so all I can say is be 100% sure you won't get fucked for it before you do it. I know many channels that do show the full show + audio in their uncuts and they have never mentioned an issue (they seem to upload them directly to patreon as videos rather than YT or anything). it might be worth reaching out to them to ask about it & if they had any advice from people about doing it that way? it sounds like you might have already done that tho, but if not you can message me or I can DM one of you on discord on some examples of creators I know who post in that way either way having the option would be great if you do decide to go ahead with it, since hopefully it wouldn't be much more work given the uncuts are essentially 95% there just with a cropped view + muted audio

TeddyBearBonfire

Hi Julien—it turns out that Spartan & Pudgey asked us to "Please let us know your thoughts in the comments down below!" As it happens, some of those thoughts on a topic that relates very much to legality are going to involve thoughts on what may or may not be legal. Let's try to comprehend what was actually specifically asked of people before demonstrating our lack of comprehension for all to see, yeah? Nice. :)

Xanafrim

What I think would be most helpful is if you just put a timer on the bottom that runs the whole time, this way it is easier for people to re-sync if they have to pause part way through. And that would not increase the risk for you.

Calum

This would be really good for shows like Better Call Saul, the intro sequence is slightly shorter for your version compared to mine so I always have to try resync your reactions based on the blurred image after the title sequence as the timers don't line up exactly

Seán

The way they have it right now is already better than a timer for syncing 100%

Taneli

I don't support showing the entire uncut material, because to my understanding it seems to go against many of the fair use criteria of the copyright law (in US, other countries may have different criteria). Syncing my copy takes half a minute with adjustable screen and volume as a benefit so it's not an issue for me. Just because some other channels have "gotten away with it" for a time, some even for a long time, doesn't mean it's going to continue that way forever. The more prevalent this becomes on Patreon the more likely it is that some big studio or streaming service is going to crack down on this, because it hurts their revenue. I personally can't see how any of these channels would have either the resources or a position to defend this in the court if that would happen. I don't think it's a "low risk" venture, so I wouldn't want you to get in trouble over this. Of course I'm not a lawyer, so I recommend you consult at least a few different lawyers specialized in copyright before you jump the gun.

Aidan

I have no issues with the current way - the minor sync differences that sometimes occur are easily dealt with. You guys are obviously more clued up on the legal complications than I am, but personally I don't think it's worth the risk. Even if the commentary/analysis transforms the content enough that you're legally in the free to show it, it still opens the door for disputes and all the headaches that come with that. Hope you figure it all out!

Leo

Yeah I use a program called Stacher to grab the youtube videos, I'll use Shutter Encoder to turn some pirated .mkv file into an .mp4, and then drop both in Adobe Premier and just line up when they start the video and what the volume is and size of the show. It's handy enough - I can use the English track of Alice in Borderlands - but it makes adding subtitles a pain, so I wouldnt recommend it for Dark or AiB unless you can stand the dub.

PuNKD Steven

Rather than showing the full screen, maybe just increase the time before going to the cut screen to allow more time to properly sync up. It can take a couple of tries to get it completely in sync in the short amount of time it's shown so I have to go back to the start to get it just right with my copy

Victoria Tofoli

My biggest issue with the syncing up option is that I cant watch on my phone. I love watching reactions while I do my cardio for example or on the bus. I am okay with the watch along as well, is just I need to have time to sit down and sync up to watch it.

midothegreat

I like it, it's more convenient for us lazy people

StevenFromNJ

as someone who travels a lot, this would be so clutch. Can’t sync reaction + show on my phone, so having a long uncut that I can watch individually would be awesome. The rewatch value would be great too since resyncing an be annoying Love the effort you both give for your patreons! Cheers

Dasypodidae

Thanks for the explanation Leo and Teddy

Julien

Every dolt going on about how you "have no problem synching" and therefore you don't need this, good for you, but many of us watch reactions primary on the go and with headphones. Synching two screens is a luxury I have at home, not while I'm out and about. I like to enjoy my reactions on the subway, at lunch, at the park, on flights, etc. So yes, full length reactions one screen are a godsent. Those who don't want this can simply.... ignore it.

Julien

It's convenient for everyone who enjoys reactions outside of home and/or with headsets

Louis

Movie munchies, perfect mix and magic magy all do this. It’s way better.

Taneli

It's not a case of those who don't need it can just ignore it, if the worst case scenario is the channel gets taken down or S&P face other type of legal repercussions that puts their entire livelihood and channel at jeopardy.

Daniels dos Tronos

Yeah, I also don't consider low risk, seen channels having to delate their entire library of a show IN PATREON because of showing the entire ep

Grayson

PLEASE consider watching Dexter if you haven't already 🙏🙏🙏

TeddyBearBonfire

The concern is that this will put their channel at risk. A lot of Patreon channels fly under the radar, as we all know, but plenty of channels have nevertheless either had posts taken down or had the channel locked pending review (which can be an indefinite status), during which nothing can be watched. The luxury easy syncing for on the go reactions would be nice, but it's not worth the risk when all it takes is some channel reports to put it at risk. One can't "simply... ignore it" when it comes to the risk of actual repercussions of copyright infringement.

Julien

That's not what they asked us. "We have sought out some legal advice about fair use and copyright laws in Australia alongside reaching out to Patreon's terms of service support and discussing with some larger creators." They're handling it. They didn't ask the advice of would-be Internet lawyers.

Lyn Hurst

I would enjoy seeing uncut reactions with even a partial screen all the way through. However, if there is the slightest chance you could get a copyright block, then I say no.

TeddyBearBonfire

Not quite: "Please let us know your thoughts in the comments down below!" It's good that they're taking legal advice, but if their lawyer isn't aware of the policy decisions platforms like Patreon take to (relatively unpredictably) suspend or terminate channels based on their copyrighted content, then their advice might not be fully fit for purpose. Whatever Patreon's support team (or that of other such platforms) might say, they have a sketchy track record (as with other such platforms again!) of inconsistently enforcing from channel to channel, which turns the whole situation into something of a gamble. A lawyer is concerned with what is legal, not what is the policy of individual platforms outwith the realm of legality. Try not to be so selfish as to fret that they are getting a fuller picture conveyed to them. They deserve to have the wider perspective regarding how this might affect them and their future.

James Waters

I know it would be almost like an additional hoop to jump through for you and for us, but it might be an idea instead of posting unedited cuts on patreon raw, you could link them to a dropbox link? Obviously the cons would be that we would need dropbox to watch it on phones and that, and people would be able to watch the reaction after cancelling a membership, however it might be a neat way to not get copyright issues as in effect it would be a privately shared content. If I'm being a complete fool and missing some obvious downsides then lemme know, I just know a youtuber who uses dropbox links in the description box to full uncut reactions with audio and everything directly on youtube. Maybe a google drive link instead? Just something to consider to minimize risk if the rest of the community are okay with it

Sarah Stapleton

I typically don’t mind the synch BUT it would be really nice so I can more easily watch with headphones

FenerX

I don't really have an issue with synching cause I always watch on my pc but I can see how for others it can be an issue, personally I don't really care which way you guys decide to go, whatever is best.

Michael Short

I personally doubt that their lawyer is aware of the issues. I spoke with a lawyer myself who said it's reckless for a lawyer to advise their client that they can break copyright law. And that's exactly what this would be, it's taking someone else's creative work and posting it for their followers to watch without having to pay the original creators of the movie / show.

Michael Short

the people wanting this change aren't concerned with the ease of syncing up. they are mostly just wanting access to the movies / shows for free.

Kev Martin

And it seems like the 'legal' reasoning given is because it is "low risk" - in other words, "go ahead, because you *probably* won't get caught".

Irish Latino Reacts

I don't think you need to do this guys. As others have expressed, I'd hate for you to get in trouble and lose all you have built up. I run a very new reaction channel and regardless of what anyone else says, this would make me nervous. Plus, you'd never be able to upload them through Youtube like you currently do. I am definitely a biased commenter though so take that into account.

Rat MacKay

I'll be really honest, I almost never become a paid member of folks until they offer this option. I am usually watching reactions on my phone while doing other things...having to sync up means I rarely actually do so and end up paying for a sub that I never use. Not saying this so that you do it for my money specifically, but I can't be the only person who decides who to pay monthly using this criteria, so figured it was worth mentioning.

Gum Gum

full show playing for twd

DRIP DROP

This channel is the only one I have that does the sync thing and I've always hated it.. its so much more convenient on one screen. For example, I was just traveling and in my hotel I could watch my other patreons but not this one

DRIP DROP

I watch 5 other Patreon channels that have been doing this even longer then this channel. Yes they can still load on YouTube, its fixed in editing

DRIP DROP

Yea i think uploading it on Vimeo instead of YT is a better option if doing the uncut version

Kev Martin

Everything's about convenience, apparently. No weight given to the illegality, or the risk to the channel, or the rights of the copyright owners. For me, seeing that a channel does this is a reason to leave or not to subscribe, as the few I've encountered that give away the full content don't also provide a version to sync, destroying the viewing experience. Yes I know S&P have said if they do this they will provide both options. Sure its a personal choice but watching a movie or similar on a phone is utterly bizarre to me. The bigger the screen the better.

Allison

I know a few others that do the sync option as well, being more careful about copyright.

AlrightThere

I'm happy for either but I do like the idea of not having to sync up but its not too much of a hassle if I have to. For the TWD this would be a welcome change as I don't have a streaming platform (currently) where I could sync this one up so it would end up being more expensive for me. But that's just me personally. I'm still happy for both

Malik Noman

All the uncut reactions have just the video of their reaction playing.(Most of the channels does this on patreon). So you need to have your own copy of the movie or Tv show etc to sync up with their reaction side by side.

Louis

You have the ability to watch reaction and show in same video. No need to sync.

Abubakar Ahmed

Yeah, i currently watch perfect mix patron, its realy nice to watch the reaction and the show in the same screen and they never had problem with it

Hefty517

It’s not going to affect how much I enjoy your channel one way or the other, but yes, not having to synch would be one less step to jump into the next amazing reaction. 😊

DRIP DROP

82% voted yes. They literally are aware of any consequences and spoke with an actual lawyer already... how does it destroy the viewing experience? It literally enhances it. Unless its something you haven't seen before, youre able to watch the reaction and movie on one screen..

DRIP DROP

I guess this guy speaks for 80% of the community

DRIP DROP

There are literally plenty of Patreon channels that offer uncut and show the video and reaction. Not sure why people are doom posting lmao worse comes to worse you get a takedown notice and stop it. I would upload it to vimeo or something though.

Abubakar Ahmed

It would be so much fun and easy to be able to watch your uncut reactions with the show on the screen, and ofcourse considering that you now feel more confident to do so!

Kev Martin

As I said its a personal preference, but for me the viewing experience is destroyed by trying to view it on a portion of a small screen, such as 1/3 of a smartphone. Effectively meaning you're watching a movie or show in a 'screen' around the size and resolution of a GameBoy. Or, take a few moments to sync to a legal copy. 'Cause I'm sure everyone owns or has the right to watch all these shows, right? I've even seen people openly cheer this idea because it means they won't have to pay for xyz. That makes it stealing (which in case you haven't heard is illegal pretty much everywhere as far as I know). And the "low risk" thing can only mean a low risk of getting busted as far as I can tell.

Rat MacKay

I don't watch anything that I don't already own or have access to via a streaming service...so it's not about getting to see things for free. It is about a simplified viewing experience. I'm not here to argue about it with anyone or have someone essentially call me a thief, so maybe take that elsewhere, please.

Martin

You can already watch their reaction after ending your patreon sub, if you dont mind some work and planning. All you do is make a private yt playlist and add all of the reactions you plan to watch at a later point after you end/pause your patreon sub. Alternatively copy and paste the urls of the reactions you plan to watch in a document.

Nick Luce

As long as you provide the uncut that we can sync up on our own as well, I don't mind. I want my own full screen copy where I can control the volume.

Vincent

Buddy, if people wanted to watch movies/shows for free, there‘s plenty of ways to do so. It’s just easier and more convenient, that’s all it is.

Vincent

How‘s it looking with TWD? You guys are still gonna react to it after BCS, right? (Please say yes)

Alpha

It just makes the whole reaction experience so much better. I remember how frustrating it was trying to watch full reactions to Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon—eventually, I gave up and settled for the cut versions on YouTube. Honestly, I think most of us wouldn’t mind paying a few extra dollars to get the full show playing alongside the uncut reaction. It’s worth it for the complete experience.

Kev Martin

Mate it was obvious I wasn't talking about you specifically (or anyone else), but generally. Of course some people own the movies, but not "EVERYONE" does. So those who don't, are stealing, and some are clearly keen to do so. And by supporting this (especially so strongly) you are kind of facilitating that. So please skip the pearl clutching offended carry-on.

Rat MacKay

But you came on my comment thread with it. I didn't hunt you down to whinge about you having a different stance than me...you hunted me (and others) down to disagree...seems like you are craving some confrontation while some of us are just giving S&P the feedback they asked for.

Kayleb Patel

100% Im kind of tired of having to purchase subscriptions for all the streaming platforms, and I have to keep synching both screens if I watch illegally. Other popular channels such as Perfect Mix and Bridgetco use full scenes and they seem to be fine. However please make sure you dont get penalised for it, we all know how strict film and streaming laws are.

PNWKyle

I think the additional headaches trying to do it might bring you aren't worth it. As long as you have good cues for synching our copy with what you're watching at the beginning, it's fine.

TeahanJang

I think most people will agree that they would prefer not having to sync up ourselves, but i dont think it’s worth the risk of things getting copyrighted just to make our lives slightly easier. Not sure how you would because its already good, but you could potentially make it easier for people to sync up their copys to yours. Just dont risk anything you guys dont need to!!!

Frank

This ^. I am all for it, but if there is any risk at all to your channel I say play it safe and don't.

Dasypodidae

I just read the post "REMINDER SYNCING REQUIRED FOR UNCUT". I seems like they ultimately have decided against providing uncut reactions with the full show paying? Is there any other post were they give more information about that decision?
