Been waiting for this episode. It's pretty much balls to the wall for the rest of the season at this point. We also have some great moments I'm looking forward to seeing again.

Golladan

Nah that blue light seen on Earth in the opening is just light.

Golladan

Camina Drummer is HER! Amos started acting like that after he scared that kid the previous episode. Naomi was looking at moving the missile with the protomolecule. She was afraid Cortazar's Shout was it.

Peter Shim

Cant wait til you guys find out more about Amos and Lydia

Lindsay Mathieson

Spartan nailed it! Prax's daughter (Mei) is the person you see waving through the dome at Gunny and her team on Ganymede. After that she went to the clinic in Sector four and everything went to shit. Good spot guys, most people miss it. Such a minor detail and not really important to the plot, but loaded with emotional meaning. A Belter child happily waving to a Martian patrol, before Martians in orbit destroy the mirror, which kills so many Belters on the surface. nb. The "station" the Rocinate is heading to is Ganymede, a moon of Jupiter. Its actually the largest moon in the solar system, but low gravity because of its low density. Earh and Mars co-administer the Agricultural domes on it, which are staffed by Belters. And yes, there is a lot more to be learned about Amos, one of the most amazing character arcs on The Expanse. Great reaction, really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the rest as the craziness ramps up!

Paul

I love the banter between you two, always hilarious. Also, I love Prax's actor, Terry Chen, (the Botanist). When he learned of Mei's possible fate, his anguish and grief felt so real. I don't have children yet, but it makes it so easy to empathize with his situation, and his desire to go back. Amos sure is right, it's a good reason to tag along lol.

AnastasiyaK

Love this episode solely for the intro of Prax and his daughter and the belter rebellion moment on Tycho, when you get to see just what kind of person Fred’s right hand gal is. Her name is Drummer but dont worry, you won’t have any trouble remembering her name 😄 Love these little glimpses we get early on into Amos and his story. He really is one of the most intriguing characters ever put to screen. Cannot wait till the next one! One of the best!!

Ryan

I love that you guys have been doing Youtube for awhile now, but Pudgy still starts laughing while doing the "if you are following over on Youtube" bit. Its more rare if she doesn't laugh while doing it lmao

michael j hill

I think of Dawes as a Fidel Castro type of leader. Maybe inspires and sounds real good but in reality is real bad fucking news. The procedure that Cortazar had done removes empathy, not emotion. I had the same thought about Amos maybe having had that procedure but I think the encounter with the kid fucked him up and maybe some bad news also so he tried to drink it away. By the end of this season, you’ll learn more about Amos‘s childhood.

Trepanation21

I'm surprised these two didn't notice/comment when they saw the fullscreen ID of the botanist having a distinctly Greek name in "Praxideke", hah!! It stood out to me, personally. Makes you wonder about the character's backgrounds. Somewhere, perhaps a Greek family member of Prax exists (or existed), and cherished that heritage enough to give him such a distinct name. I like thinking about these "off-screen" potentials in their personal histories. It makes the melting pot of humanity's future feel precious, emotional, connected.

Trepanation21

Disagree about that read of Dawes. Dawes' ideology is a fair and earnest one, he's just a little closer to actually understanding the "necessary" politics than a lot of belter leadership is used to. He's not Fidel, he just has a different vision of the path to belter strength and independence than a lot of people (that are and aren't belters) might be comfortable with. I don't believe for one second that Dawes is an evil man, or that he doesn't prioritize belter unification, strength, and prosperity (especially compared to certain other key characters across the story of The Expanse). I won't have a book discussion, but lets put it this way. Dawes gets a lot more time to represent himself and the belt in the novels (meaning, you probably wouldn't feel the way you do up there ^ about book Dawes), and for what it's worth, the show-version of Dawes *is* kept by and large in the same lane - It's basically the same guy, you just get a better feel for him and his route in the novels. They didn't change his politics or much of his behavior in the show, you just don't get to see as much of his chess.

Bill B.

Love for Amos and for Drummer! Love how Drummer was so clinical executing her captors! Those idiots deserved it!

Bill B.

I agree. Simply put, whatever Dawes is, he’s nothing like Fidel Castro.

Bill B.

This is one of many reasons I have grown to love reaction channels and subscribe to a few. I’ve watched the Expanse twice (and read the books), but not until now did I pick up on the fact that the “waving person” Gunny saw was Prax’s daughter Mei.

Bill B.

To be fair, I think his full name Praxideke showed up just twice, both briefly, amongst chaos. I don’t know much about Greek names and whether that should be an obvious reference to Greek ancestry, but there was so much going on in the background (questions about whether his daughter is dead or alive, a coup attempt on Tycho) that even if this was obviously Greek it just showed up twice and was easy to miss. Also the character has strong East Asian features so whenever he is on screen, there is no reason to think he has Greek ancestry. As we know the Belters, just from language alone, represent a huge mix of so many races and ethnicities from Earth.

michael j hill

Dawes complains about being under the boot of others about the threat of being spaced and that’s exactly what he does. He tried to do it to Miller. He screwed over Julie. He says all these big things, but does the exact same things they do. Drummer and Miller saw it.

A L

Praxidike is also a moon of Jupiter, so it's more likely he was named for that imo. It uniquely has a retrograde orbit as well, meaning it orbits in the opposite direction of it's parent body.

Sheri

Another great reaction. Drummer executing those 2 guys at the end with precision while she's stumbling out with a gunshot wound is just so badass.

Lyn Hurst

I am having trouble following this show. I think it is interesting, but I usually watch this after The Walking Dead and sometimes late in the evening. I am sometimes thrashed after TWD. I think I need to split this up and watch it another night. I usually don't want to watch TWD right before bed. I lost completely why Amos may think he had the same procedure as Cortazar.

Lyn Hurst

She has gotten better. I did notice tonight but it was happening more frequently before reactions that make her nervous like in Dark and Breaking Bad probably others, first ones that came to mind.

Lyn Hurst

Isn't earth known as The Blue Planet?

Golladan

Amos doesn't think he had the same procedure as Cortazar. Amos was interested in the procedure because he wanted to know if it was reversible, as he recognizes that he himself has sociopathic tendencies that he doesn't want to have. Now the reason Amos is acting like this is because of his encounter with the kid in a previous episode. It triggered something from his past. He had some particular experiences in his past which we will learn more about and in the future, and have heard bits and pieces of already. Recall his knowledge of how pedophiles behave when telling Holden how to get to Cortazar. And mentioning to Alex in season 1 that he grew up in a brothel.

Golladan

He was named after the Jovian moon. Which itself was named after a Greek goddess. Looks like his parents weren't aware it was a female name.

Golladan

It is. But I'm assuming that what Pudgey is talking about is that in the first clip of the opening when lights are turning on over the Earth, some of those lights are blue. Unless she's talking about the blueish hues in the next clip (the ISS flyover of Europe) in which case that is the Aurora.

Lyn Hurst

Thanks, I recall the kid and Amos' reaction. I did not recall the context of why pedophiles were mentioned in connection with reaching Cortazar. But sounds like more will be revealed later.

Golladan

Amos: Have you ever talked to a pedophile? Holden: Uh... Amos: You try to ask them stuff and, they're not going to just talk about raping little kids. Amos: …but, if you show them pictures of kids, then, they'll go on and on and on. Amos: I had a private chat with Cortázar and Eros is his pedophilia. Amos: You were talking about stopping it, taking it away. That's why he wouldn't help you.

Amber A

Yeah, the scene on the freighter was so tragic and sad. I didn't get any real malice out of it, just blunt belter practicality. They've lives their lives with precious little, and then Mars & UN go and destroy their food supply in one of their skirmishes? Who's to say they won't have a battle over ceres, or tycho, or another belter station next time as well? They have to sustain themselves. It's definitely a cold-blooded move to space the inner refugees, but the flat, matter-of-fact way the guy said "Inners wreck Ganymede...belter lives first from now on" rang as resigned to me. An act the captain saw as a necessary evil, and he wasn't going to beat himself up about it when it was their governments that put them in this situation. Now, people can argue on whether that's a justified action, or whether the guy should feel more guilt than he does, but at the end of the day, push comes to shove, many people revert to tribalism, no matter your class or experience (we've seen Chrisjen champion tribalism thus far in the series, for example, with "Earth must come first").

Amber A

Dawes is definitely a guy who will bend and break principles to serve his goals, like he spoke about to Holden and Naomi about how good men do bad things, and bad men do good things, and Holden would just get confused trying to wrap his head around it. I would wager, at this point, he's the best and most moral of the politicians we've seen thus far in The Expanse (he hasn't reached the lows of Chrisjen, who's all for war crimes and torture if it serves her access to power and her ego and her love of Earth, or Errinwright, who approved a genocide on belters and ran a coverup on it to potentially get an edge on Mars down the line), but the bar is midway down a 7 foot pit in the dirt so far, so that's not saying much. He technically didn't screw Julie, he just shunted responsibility to Fred while he dealt with Ceres' uprising (his primary goal of obtaining a home for belters was more important than an earther ally not in mortal danger), as Fred had more resources (and eventually sent the Roci on the task of getting Julie, who as far as he knew, was just hanging out on Eros for low priority pick-up). You'll never catch me say Dawes is a good dude and not two-faced to some extent, but he does walk the walk with his support for the belt, he's just comfortable enough getting his hands bloody in the process if he needs to. He's the kind of politician you support to get you to a certain point, not someone you want in the seat of power afterwards, and at least Dawes' aspirations for power aren't primarily self-serving. He's closer to Nelson Mandela than Fidel Castro when you look at revolutionary leaders.

michael j hill

I haven’t seen her go out and kill a completely innocent person just because they were inconvenient to her like he tried to do to Miller. I think it’s easy for the viewer to get swept up in his words and the amazing job. The actor does he is intended to be very persuasive. And the actor does do an amazing job his best role I’ve seen him in. Like I said, Miller saw right through his bullshit and so did drummer. Strongly disagree about Nelson Mandela.. if you ever do a deep dive on Fidel Castro in the early years and before he took power, he was very popular and inspired a lot of people just like Dawes and got a lot of people killed in the process and actually not the best leader in my opinion, but in the beginning before he took power when he was just talk, he inspired a lot of people. I agree A lot of of the leaders in the expanse are extremely flawed. Personally, I think he is the most flawed and the most dangerous with what he has to work with at least..

deific

The Belter that stopped Prax knew he was a Belter because when Prax first woke up he asked if there were any children and got ignored until he repeated in Belter creole.

Trepanation21

Yeah, I didn't articulate it in my original comment, but I was thinking that I enjoyed the *potential* background ancestry or personal nuance that a given name can imply, despite the -or a- character's ethnic features, or "surface identity". I know that, obviously, our celestial bodies follow Greek and Roman naming conventions, I just like getting immersed in the "unspoken lore" potential of these warm side characters in stories like this, haha. And being an individual with a unisex birth name myself, I kind of adore the contrast of giving him a name that alludes to feminine mythology, and without it being some defining focal point. It just is. We just are who we are, even if he loves being a botanist instead of a "goddess of judicial punishment". Nuance: For The Expanse veterans, it kind of lends an extra bit of contemplative juxtaposition to Prax's "that guy" moment. I just have fun with these kinds of things, even if it's not that deep. Cheers all.

Bill B.

I can’t believe that I’m in a discussion comparing fictional Anderson Dawes to Communist dictator Fidel Castro, (though I have to admit it is kind of fun) but they are not alike, Dawes truly is affected the mass murder of fellow Belters on Eros, while Castro had no problem stealing from fellow Cubans and allowing his executioner Che Guevara to kill people “without fully knowing whether they were guilty” (direct quote, translated). And guilty of what, not being communists? If Dawes were to be compared with any sort of dictator, he’d most likely fall on the extremity of Fascism, in which the “others” who are slaughtered are from the same “country” - in this case “country” being the Belt - based on their minority status (race, ethnicity, religion, etc), rather than socioeconomics. Dawes and Johnson have similar hopes for the Belt, but Dawes is more concerned about race/ethnicity… which certainly trickles over into both the split from Fred Johnson (Earther) as well as Prax’s Martian friend being spaced solely because she is Martian, and the security guard not letting Prax to go with her solely because he was born and raised a Belter.

Trepanation21

It's important to remember that just because a character is a "protagonist", it doesn't also equal them having an objective read on the story's scope like the audience can. Miller approving or disapproving of someone doesn't inherently mean anything conclusive. In fact, that's one of the most significant character conflicts we've seen among our protagonists, Holden's views vs Miller's views, vs Fred's views, vs Naomi's views, and so on. Personally, I choose to view Dawes in the context of his belief in the unifying and strengthening belters in the "world stage" (system stage?). I think he understands the political game that he and the Belt are in the middle of, and I believe that Dawes prioritizes legitimizing the future of the Belt and its prosperity, even if it may prove to be a strenuous (and tenuous) tug-of-war of leap-frog alliances and chess moves (and chess inherently involves violence) to get there. Drummer simply came to believe in Fred's vision more than Dawes'. This isn't really meant to "defend" him, just characterize him. He *is* a gangster that will enjoy the benefits of what he believes he's earned, but he's also a legitimate revolutionary that *actually is all-in for the cause* of not only alleviating his people's struggle, but elevating his people. I don't envision Dawes becoming a dictator. ...The thing is, there's just several different ways that the fragmented Belters see as the way forward for their people. Some of them don't even want to be unified, or considered "peers" with the inner nations. They all want independence, however, and want to be free from reliance on inner air, water, and work. Dawes and Johnson just happen to be the most prominent leaders with meaningful assets and political clout in this era.

michael j hill

Lol what does that say? The more you share the more your bowl is plenty or something like that. stealing what about the “belter tax”? Also Dawes didn’t seem to be too troubled by attempting to have Miller killed.

michael j hill

Fair enough, but Miller out of everybody in the show seems to be the most clear eyed. Like with his statement to either his partner or Holden which went something like this” just because someone is the underdog doesn’t make them a good guy?” I feel like Miller was the wisest character so far at least. especially when it comes to matters of the belt from the perspective of a belter.

Julien

You are giving away way too much. Yes, you are quoting what was said, but you are steering people toward conclusions they aren’t necessarily supposed to reach yet. They’ve dropped hints and you are prematurely painting the whole picture. You are doing way too much and spoiling Amos character background. Not cool

Julien

Fidel Castro was great fucking news, actually.

michael j hill

Then you would probably be pretty happy with Dawes as leader of the belt I’m guessing.
