Hailee Steinfeld (the actress who plays Mary) voices Vi in Arcane and Gwen Stacey in the spider-verse movies if you guys didn’t know.

Really happy movies are back! I know Pudgey has had nerve pain so it's tough. Just an idea, you guys could take an intermission break in the middle like the older movies used to. Keep up the good work legends👏

I wanted to point out that although twerking feels new it’s ancient. And as an AA I’ll always push back against the notion that there’s something wrong with it. It’s included bc it’s a form of expression as much as music has always been. That’s a part of our journey and cultural significance. And even though today’s music has evolved to a different sound, it was born from our frustration, pain, hope & joy. Sammie was able to bring down the veil of time & unite the past, present & future which is what Remmick was after.

The Choctaw is the name of an indigenous tribe. Apparently the ones that rolled up to the house were vampire hunters.

Seems like the racism escaped your notice a bit lol. But Stack instructs Preacherboy not to look at Mary bc not only was he trying to avoid making a scene but in some places making eye contact & speaking to a white person (especially a blk man to a white woman) was forbidden. They could’ve been all in danger. Stack also shooshes Mary talking about their sex life bc he def could’ve been lynched for that. Mary could’ve also been killed which is why Stack kept his distance and behaved so coldly. I mean, she’s married too but that wasn’t as important as black / white relationship in the 30’s.

Thank you for saying this. In that wonderful music scene, the casual dismissal of this particular form of expression as "trashy" rankled but I refrained from calling it out at the time. What we call today "twerking" has had roots in Black/African dancing tradition forever. It's like the point of the scene was missed.

the continent

Exactly. Other cultures have similar dances with their hips that aren’t demonized like twerking has been.

There are also Pudgey's closing words at the very end. I really don't know what to make of that and am trying to take them as charitably as possible. But the idea that all you need to find freedom is "let go of this shit" that is afflicting you is... quite the take. It sounds a lot like putting the onus on the oppressed to somehow mentally or metaphorically free themselves out of a literal, physical reality. I mean, the movie literally shows that even if the vampires never showed up, the black folks just vibing in their own juke joints (so finding a way to "free themselves of all shit" through music)... were gonna get massacred in the morning by the Klan anyway. “If you just let go, that’s where the real freedom lies” is a crazy thing to say. You can't "zen" your way out of violent murderous oppression and the brutality of white supremacy. That was not remotely a message of the movie.

I’m wondering if the topic makes them uncomfortable bc it wasn’t mentioned much in the entire cut. Perhaps it was edited out? Blatant racism, like TWD’s Merle is recognizable & easily condemnable. They recognized the Klan but I’m wondering how much of all the visual indicators / dialogue translate. There wasn’t much of a reaction so I hope they read this. It’s not meant to be a criticism just food for thought and additional context.

How cool would a story about them be?

Glad you guys did this one! Excited movies are back!

Came here to say this but I couldn’t have worded it better than this

Yeah, that line can easily be passed off as a bit of comedy. Especially, how Stack says it but when someone points it out, you get that it was meant to reflect the racial and social climate of the time. Same thing when they turn the vampires away at the door. Smoke was thinking ahead and what could happen when two races combine.
