Nothing Merle could do could change or make better the things he did in his past, but for sure he could have changed his future, but he made a play to get at the Governor and its unfortunate he went out before he could so so.

z87kl

Also, I'm a Shane hater and yeah its pretty undeniable The Governor is worse than Shane

Christopher

Yeah Governor purposefully killed Merle so he would turn knowing Daryl, Rick and the crew would eventually find him. I love Merle and his character the way you guys love Shane.

Christopher

I think Shane had the potential to become a “Governor”. I think the Governor is what a “Shane” can become when surrounded by yes men and left unchecked. Governor clearly didn’t have a Rick or Lori or Dale to keep him in check like Shane did. Also interesting that Andrea seemingly was loyal to a fault to both Shane and Governor. I think they are cut from the same cloth, might be from opposite sides of a long cloth, but the same cloth nonetheless. I think the fact Governor comes right after the Shane arc is showing that Governor is a 2nd stage of the Shane archetype.

Nathan Jasper

All these rewatches later and I still shed some tears for Daryl when he finds Merle. Powerful, tragic moment. But hey at least Merle changed enough to actually think selflessly and go out swinging rather than be selfish and go out with a whimper. He's come a long way from that Georgia rooftop.

Shawneeboy

These earlier seasons are so weird with the cuts because of the where the commercials are supposed to be lol. The later seasons 4-6 aren’t as bad with that lol

Mark Laniel

being sad for merle is funny to me....the guy had an ss symbol on his motorbike...so he's a neo nazi...and a guy who would have gladly killed t-dawg etc.....he loved his brother sort of but not enough to be a decent man.

Estevan Rivera

I was never sad for Merle. I was sad for Daryl losing him of course..but to say he loved his brother "sort of" is absolutely false

Elora D. Dragneel

Michael Rooker said Merle's last line "I ain't gonna beg. I'm not begging you!" was directed at God, not the Governor. What a great episode, RIP Merle

DRIP DROP

Amazing reaction as always and great post discussion

I definitely agree with Spartan that Shane and Merle are very close in terms of morality and you can you can argue who’s worse as a person, I might say Shane is slightly worse bc of him trying to kill his best friend who’s like a brother while Merle loved his brother more than anything and yea the Governor is in a league of his own , doesn’t take away how great a character he is but definitely far worse as a person. Though I love how people got on me for saying that the Governor would beat Shane in a fight yet he just destroyed Merle who is one of the best fighters in the verse and who would more than likely beat Shane got wrecked. I’m not saying he’s more skilled but bc The Governor is so crazy, I think he’ll always go that extra mile to win a fight like how he bit Merle’s fingers off and this is a pretty common opinion in the fandom so it confused me why some people disagreed.

Spartan if you love Michonne so much, you should marry her! Hahah love you guys and your reactions. Cannot wait for the finale, and for y'all to get into the upcoming seasons. 4 and 5 are my favorites!

Sharpgirl

I don't cry because of Merle's death, I cry from Daryl's reaction to seeing his brother turned. Then having to put him down. Ruins me.

Pat

Shane and Merryl at like a 6, 7? crazy.

Pat

if that was the case, bold of him to think anyone would care except for daryl. nobody else moved. i did not like merle. but i truly think if they gave him another season of character growth, he would have been a fan favorite. the actor was so good, and the direction they almost took him in could have been so much fun to see.

Kayleb Patel

Bro just wants Pudgey for himself lmao

Donny

Good catch by Spartan, that was Ben (boy from Tyrese’s group) that Merle shot in front of the Governor. And at the end Walker Merle is eating Ben’s body

Bill B.

Great way for Merle to go out. He had to know he was not leaving that place alive, not with all of the firepower he knew the governor would bring. He sacrificed himself to save Michonne and hopefully take the governor down (if only that kid didn’t get in the way!) and I think it’s the first time we’ve ever seen Merle choose his own way, do the right thing, 100% his decision. Watching Daryl find him just kills me. Cannot wait for the finale!!!!!!

Bill B.

That’s a great point, I totally forgot that I used to watch this with commercials!!! Though to be fair eventually I would just set it to DVR, then start watching 20 mins after it went on air, so I could fast forward thru the commercials and then finish the episode with the rest of the world and get ready for the Talking Dead show that used to come right after!

Bill B.

Merle seems to have been born a bit twisted, and into a really, really shitty environment that made his dark side worse. Daryl was born with a good heart and he’s going to love his brother no matter what. At least Merle went out doing the noble and right thing. Numerous times he has said the governor needs to be assassinated, he finally got an opportunity to do it, knowing certain death would follow, and was so close, if only that kid didn’t get in the way at the last minute. Great character arc!

Christopher

I think Governor has convinced himself Merle was a traitor who turned on Woodbury for Rick’s group and his brother. I think he thinks the group values Merle more than they actually do. He might also think Rick was the one who sent Merle to try and kill him at the time they were meant to meet. He was definitely sending a message killing Merle but in a way that he would turn later.

Makeeba

Some of Merle's lines were funny though 😂 and although he wasn't the most favored character, those parts of him will be missed, for me.

Bill B.

And Michael Rooker was the perfect actor to play him, excellent delivery!!

Makeeba

Couldn't have been anyone better to play him honestly. Can't believe he's in his 70s now. Time flies by fast!

Branden Findeisen

You have to remember, there were entire commercial breaks in between some of those cuts you were talking about. We'd have a whole break to process what happened.

Lizabee

It’s hilarious to keep hearing about Shane. I never thought of him again after he died lol.. he was too weak to be as bad or good as any of the characters still living

corey garceau

i feel like Merle went after the governor himself knowing he would probably die because he knew he wouldnt be able to change the way daryl wants him too.

Tom

Here's a hot take: Merle is a better man than Shane. Bet that blows Spartan and Pudgey's minds. But it's true. All the bad shit Merle has done he's done on orders or to save the group, including kidnapping Michone. And when the moment of truth came, he let Michone go because he knew it wasn't right. You can't say the same for Shane. He was completely selfish. Even when he did things for Lorie and Carl, he only did them because he wanted to posses them. Shane is a bad guy and a destructive force. Merle is also a destructive force, mostly self-destructive, but in the end he was a good man.

JohnnyUtah

It was very frustrating this season, as soon as they focus on character development they kill them. Incredible season though.

JohnnyUtah

Merle did what he knew Rick couldn't. He was willing to be the devil they all thought he was.
