Ah yes, Troy. The most 3/5 stars movie there ever was 😌

Rich Plumb

*cough* I do believe that Superbad had won the previous Poll for movies *cough*

Joe

Oh snap

Fran Navarro

You guys can't imagine how much time I've been waiting for this... OMG.

Alex

Mid take. Quite possibly some of the best set design and action sets in cinema.

dieselbeast

I don't want to put words in their mouths but Troy has been on their list for the longest time now since late last year I believe, but a lot of things have happened in between then and they are just now getting to it which I'm thankful for lol it's been suggested plenty ever since 300 and Gladiator

dieselbeast

Let no man forget how menacing we are!!! We are Lions!!! In my opinion that's the Greatest shortest (key word shortest lol) speech in ancient war films! Brad Pitt was born to play Achilles!

Julien

There... is no history. It's all mythology (i.e., completely made up). At best, some historians think that the story of the Trojan War may have been inspired by a real war (possible) and that Troy may have actually existed but there is no consensus or evidence. This movie is an attempt to establish a faux-historical basis for the Trojan War myth. But there is no real history to know.

Richie3891

Brad Pitt himself would disagree quote from Brad Pitt : "I had to do Troy because [...] I pulled out of another movie and then had to do something for the studio. So I was put in Troy. It wasn't painful, but I realized that the way that movie was being told was not how I wanted it to be. I made my own mistakes in it. What am I trying to say about Troy? I could not get out of the middle of the frame. It was driving me crazy. I'd become spoiled working with David Fincher. It's no slight on Wolfgang Petersen. Das Boot is one of the all-time great films. But somewhere in it, Troy became a commercial kind of thing. Every shot was like, 'Here's the hero!' There was no mystery."

Paul

An supremely awesome surprise! Underrated gem of a love and combat movie. I love that you guys are just picking movies executively. Polls can be nice, but I think choosing your own adventures is best.

However he felt about it, that's on him, no sweat off my back, I've been knowing he has felt like that, I don't care lol all I care about is that I enjoyed the film and I absolutely did, again no sweat off my back, that's on him

Alex

I know Spartan is gonna get a GEE UP from this can't wait to watch.

AkiZzu

„What irony that Achilles was killed with a shot through the Achilles heel“ Well, it‘s not irony at all - the Achilles’ heel is literally named after Achilles, since in mythology it was his only vulnerable spot.

Demo

My favorite movie OAT. I'm glad y'all enjoyed it!!

spartanandpudgey

"Mythologically accurate" rather than historically accurate 🙊 whoops

Julien

But it's more than that. The conceit of the movie is that these are the real life events upon which the Trojan War mythology was based. So the idea is that when the body of the greatest warrior Achilles was found, with an arrow singularly lodged in his heel, people concluded that the arrow must have felled him and that the heel was his weakness. So the mythology built from that observation. The movie is attempting to show how a myth can be built from mundane occurrences (random arrow in the heel of a guy that was already mortally wounded) and false interpretation.

Demo

From after the discussion, I think why Achilles stands out to so many people is because despite him being near-mythic and godlike in war, he was shown to be deeply human and he went down just as easy as anyone else. It's also kind of ironic that someone like Paris would be the one to kill Achilles .

Julien

That'd be my exact rating as well when I saw it in theaters. Some stand out moments but overall, meh. That was also the broad consensus at the time (decent, not great), so the intense online fandom 20 years later is perplexing. But I am looking forward to the edited reaction. A good way to "watch" it a second time.

EnVy316LeGeNd

well i guess i'll wait for edited version on this one cause its on amazon here but also means you have to have AMC. Once done with Severance I can cancel Apple...unless you do Silo. Hate having 8 different subscriptions.. welp i rented it to watch it with them lol

Hans Engelen

Did you recognize Commander Mormont?

spartanandpudgey

It was Paris of course, but it's almost as if he surrendered to the vulnerability and love of Briseis in that moment rather than fighting to his death.

Julien

I love love love that you two keep your reactions to recognizing actors to a minimum. I didn't know until now that that was a conscious decision. It's awesome. It's probably my no. 1 pet peeve with reactors. How they immediately jump out of the movie to discuss the actor and whatever role they knew him from. Or worse, when they spent the next five minutes vocally trying remember where they've seen the actor instead of being immersed into the movie. It has ruined many an important scene for me. You two are great.

Hans Engelen

Might want to wait ... still hoping they might do Foundation at some point. But for now having the Expanse is good enough for me.

David McDonald

"Sing to me oh Goddess, of the wrath of Achilles Peleus' son, that brought countless ills upon the Achaeans." Achilles is the original antihero. It still blows my mind how amazing and emotionally/morally complex this 3000-year-old story is.

Cal

Omg, I've been waiting forever to see Spartan react to this movie!

EnVy316LeGeNd

i like Troy alot, alot but Gladiator to me is in another realm altogether, same with 300

Sharpgirl

Nawr way!!!!!! Let's go!!!!!

Ricky

Loved watching this movie with you guys! It's one of my all time favorites, and actually my first "historical" war movie as a kid. Now you need to watch Kingdom of Heaven 😁

Ricky

Also did you notice Sneaky Snake Pycelle? 😂

Angel M

FINALLY! Also, weird fun fact! The actress who plays Helen is married to the actor who plays Daryl in The Walking Dead

Vanessa Navarro

Hector is such a great, and tragic character.

Luke

The actor you mentioned that's also in "300" is also Garp in "One Piece"

Shut Up Meg

it cracked me up when pudgey said oh he lives for the first time about Odysseus bc the epic the odyssey is about his journey trying to return home from the trojan war lol. i absolutely love the Iliad and the odyssey 10/10 would recommend reading them. the language can be a bit hard to follow but the stories are awesome.

ShanB

So glad you guys finally watched this one! Anyone else notice Ramsey’s fireball attack on Stannis in GOT seemed to be directly inspired by Troy’s attack on the Greeks? Troy movie has been bested by other projects that came after it but the influence can’t be denied.

Taneli

In the myth of The Iliad by Homer, Achilles is a demigod which is why he is so much better than all the humans. The reason why Paris could kill him with an arrow through his heel (which later became known as Achilles' heel), is that when Achilles was a child her mother sea goddess Thetis sunk his whole body in River Styx to make him invulnerable. It's said Thetis held Achilles from his heel which was the only part that didn't touch the river, which is why it was the only part of his body that wasn't protected.

Richie3891

Then I say good for you. Everyone has their own opinion. I think this is Brad Pitts most crap performance but if others enjoy it then fair play. Good for you.

SnorlaX

All over a girl says the prettiest of them all, Pudgey

Kate

I'm glad you didn't know the story, because it made for a great reaction. But holy shit, you guys, go read your ancestors' most famous literature! How do North American WASPs know the story and the characters better than you two Greeks? 😂

Farbod

I think most archeologists now agree that the city of Troy did exist at one point at the mound of mound of Hisarlık, in present day Turkey. But yes, this is a fictional mythological story. One of the greats. Was it loosely inspired by events? Maybe, but since the poem was created 500 years after the events were said to take place, its likely there is very little truth to it. Still very enjoyable.

Farbod

I thought Brad Pitt kind of got lost in this one. Especially with giants like Peter O'Toole stealing scenes left and right. Eric Bana stood out to me a lot more than Brad Pitt.

Ian Mossner

The taste for this channel is entirely geared toward Spartan hug?

Darrell Henry

That fight between Hector and Achilles is iconic. The choreography was amazing.

Julien

It's such a foundational tale of western civilization. So many terms and concepts we use today are from that story. An Achilles' heel. A Trojan horse. And odyssey. A siren's song. Etc.

Lise

I admire how balanced you are in your review, because even though Achilles is an epic character to watch in battle, and like you said a demi-God among men with the ego to match, he's such a sulky, petty, selfish child to me, especially in comparison to Hector, not that I mind it, I think it fits the movie, but didn't like him nor 'connect' to him. Even though he was not serving Agamemnon, he still participated to this war, just like a mercenary. I loved his music theme though. I also liked Odysseus, there are only a few characters with a brain in this movie. The biggest change for the music that I can remember in the extended version was during the fight between Hector and Achilles, and also at the end when the Greeks sack the city. Also the guy who wrote the script of Troy is one of the main creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff.

Lise

Agree, I think he's great to watch in battle, but the moment he has to do these deep dialogues he looks out of his depth. I think Brad Pitt is honestly at his best doing comedy, like in Burn after reading.

Lise

Also sorry if this has been asked before, but have they seen Titanic? If they haven't this would be an epic reaction. I'm thinking of this cause Troy has the same music composer so it brought Titanic to mind. Either way so happy to see them reacting to movies again!

BERSERKS

Is there a reason why you can't put the edited version out at the same time as the full length? Or just lazy.

Christopher

Ned Stark killing Jeor Mormont Also should have figured Paris would be deadly with a bow. He’s Legolas after all. A true greek tragedy

MateoP

Extended is wayyyy better 📈

Richie3891

Russell you kill it. Brad this is meet Joe black bad.

Garrett Serbin

Achilles dragged Hector behind his chariot thru the greeks camp so everyone would see he killed the Trojans best warrior. It was a morale booster... But yes it was disgraceful and uncalled for as Achilles realized in the conversation with King Priam, Hectors father... Achilles isnt use to losing those he loves and overreacted. Which leads to his demise
