MGH

Gotta disagree with you there, Spartan. I think the recast of Chrisjen's husband was a great move. Just keep watching.

spartanandpudgey

nah hard disagree the other one had traits that balanced out with Avasarala, he was charming yet compassionate, calm yet goofy. this one just seems like an every day jo normal kinda guy. for someone like Avasarala that doesn't feel as suitable

Jordan

I feel like its pretty unanimous among Expanse fans that the recast was terrible. I think the writer / creator mentioned how much flak they got from it. It's quite jarring with how different their vibes are.

MGH

Make that unanimous minus one... I always liked the new guy better. It's actually his normality that does it for me.

Agreed, Spartan. The recast Arjun has a much stiffer, less warm personality than the original. Original Arjun has a grandfatherly warmth, a disarming smile, etc. Recasts are obviously necessary when schedules conflict; it's a necessary evil of the industry. But I hate this trend of changing the traits of the character itself when shows change their actor. If the show is trying to depict a character, it shouldn't be so ready to just change what the traits of that character are when the actor changes. First time I saw this season, I initially assumed that they were trying to imply she had split from her husband and gotten a new partner over the timeskip, because that was more believable. That would at least have been less jarring than changing the character itself.

I LOVE the Expanse. It’s taken my top spot for the best Sci-fi show I’ve ever seen (and that’s saying a lot). However I will say this is my least favorite season. It still beats out the VAST majority of other shows, but it never did it for me (maybe I need a full rewatch). That being said, I still think you’ll like it, and the next 2 are absolute FIRE. 🔥

Marvelous JJ

I've recently rewatched the show with my sister and we both think S4 is one of the best. So you never know ;)

Aye, I'm on a similar track, JJ. Season 4 is my favourite with the exception of the book 1 arc (season 1 through S2E5). Reason being, personally, I like a bit more world building time, some time left to breathe in the setting, and those are the seasons that do that. The rest of the show is more about blasting through the plot. Which is fine, because I love the plot. But I prefer a slightly slower pace from my storytelling that takes the time to sit with the world that's been established.

I really wish we got the old 20-24 episodes / season format back. There were filler episodes but they were great to explore a different side of characters and they did plenty world building. From a writing standpoint the Expanse is really sharp and really makes great use of every minute but I wish this production team had the opportunity to go off track a little bit.

Sadly it is what it is with TV shows. The reason we dont see Anderson Dawes anymore is because Jarred Harris was not available, he was working on Foundations or the Crown I believe then later Chernobyl. It's a real shame but he is a terrific actor and I imagine he is really busy. I loved him as Dawes, his mannerism, the way he talked, his delivery...phenomenal performance.
