Timmy was an illegal and undocumented birth on Earth. In the books, Earth's population is near 30 billion and you basically need government permission to have a child. He was born to a prostitute mother who died who worked alongside Lydia. When she died, Lydia looked after him. He grew up in brothels and. was forced into child prostitution himself. The term "Johns" that Charles used is an American slang word for men who hire prostitutes. That is why he is so emotionally detached. These "Johns" did horrible things to him as a child for many years. He was then turned into muscle and a hitman. When he is stressed with unfamiliar emotions (like grief for Lydia) he gets relief by engaging in violence (beating up those belters on the ship in episode 5.1. He thinks he is a monster and desperately wants to learn to be like everyone else. Lydia helped him navigate his emotions and prevented his worst impulses from harming others by... redirecting him. Erich was street trash like him who was skilled with computers and scams and they were friends. Amos Burton was their boss and at one point told Timothy that he wanted Erich dead. Timothy killed Amos instead and Erich gave Timothy Amos's identity so he could have a way off of Earth through the job lottery program.

Came to comment like everyone here, but scott fellows summed it up good. Timmy is left with no backstory for a reason, "amos" has none beyond being a violent sociopath. His childhood has been hinted at theought the series. Like when he and Miller were talking in a brothel in season 2, and "amos" saying he grew up in a place like this, that the escorts were good people. He then warns one of them that the customer looks like trouble. Timmy is a victim of very young sexual trauma and abuse, who only survived because he got big and tough, it also explains his almost evil levels of protection when it comes to kids ( think beating guy with chicken can on ganymede, or that scary as fk face he pulled when killing Dr Strickland). Either way I expected podgey to be a joker face crying this episode but both completely missed the exposition.

See ya beat me too it. I guess they didn't understand the slang.. Surely they should have known by now that he was a child prostitute. Disgusting what he went through.

Yeah... the term "Johns" was once common in the states, and then apparently faded into obscurity, but was brought back to fairly common use in the 1980's/1990's due to the TV show "COPS" where camera crews followed along with cops on their beats and often followed when Vice units went after prostitution crimes. That being said, I don't think the term is well understood outside the US.

Remember when Avasarala asks Amos how he knows how to walk in pumps, and he says “I didn’t always work in space.” That throwaway line hits WAY different after you see this episode 😢
