With the capture of the Azure Dragon the previous episodes, a couple of scenes were changed in the opening this episode. -The UNN fleet protecting Earth in the ISS clip begins to move out. -The MCRN fleet protecting Mars begins to move out. -Ships are leaving Ceres Station instead of flying to it. -Progress continues on whatever that is on the Ring Station. I do wish they had also removed the Azure Dragon from the opening.

Man that space battle this episode is sick! The way the Roci does that 360 spin while firing off that rail gun. And props to Bobby for that plan at the end! Firing some torpedoes to keep the Pella distracted, the rail gun to force it to dodge like it was doing, and the PDCs at the point where the Pella was dodging to. And... PRAX CAMEO! ANNA CAMEO!

Keon Alexander has four or five of my favorite line deliveries from the whole series in this one episode lol. 1) Ro-Ci-Nan-Te 2) James... Holden 3) I will die, before I live at the end of your leash 4) You were supposed to kill the enemy... They're not dead Such great lines and deliveries! Another one of my favorite things about this episode is that we see the exactly what Naomi meant when she had said that Marco would not die for Filip, but he would let Filip die for him. When the Roci has the Pella dead to rights, Marco doesn't try to plead for Filip's life or even console him in any way. Marco knows that his own legacy is already secured if he dies there, and so dying doesn't even phase him. So he instead uses what he thinks will be his last moment to ensure that Naomi has to see James Holden's ship kill her son in front of her as a way to twist the knife against the one woman who ever defied the "Great Marco." Although Marco does care for Filip in his own way, he cares much more about hurting Naomi for leaving him.

I agree Spartan, the fusion of rural natural living but with higher technology is exactly what my future goal is, having an off-grid high-tech cabin nestled somewhere remote in the middle of the woods. Perfection. Imagine the internal strength needed to absolve someone, to trust them, when they were trying to actively frame and murder you... if only we could all be so good as Holden. Amos knows exactly what he wants, LOL. Noodles, bars and brothels. Prax! I'd say the only other absolutely virtuous character alongside Holden, he's just a good guy, damn straight! Holden's choice to disarm the nuke, it's so tough... taking out the leader of their resistance would be a huge victory, but to have your own hands stained with the blood of your lover's son. I don't think I could have done it either. An extremely human moment for Holden.

Paul

Everything about that battle was brilliant, from pivoting on its own axis to use the railgun to Bobby's predicting how they'll dodge, just awesome!

Paul

He's a dramatic diva.

[Comment blunt] Can we stop now with pretending Marco cares about belters? To me it was always clear from the start Marco only cares about Marco.

Varun Laks

As a quick reminder with Naomi's accent, she code-switches. That means when she is around other Belters, she uses her natural Belter accent. But when she's around non-Belters like Holden, she speaks ina more universal accent (which is Dominique Tipper's natural British accent).

Etta Eskridge

Regarding the One Ship. The books make a very clear expectation that Bobbie would defeat Amos in a fair fight. She is a highly trained fighter and Amos has no actual training. Even Amos can admit to that in the books. This Xray is a huge fan favorite and it was written by Wes Chatham who plays Amos. Pudgey continues to amaze me with her insight!! Spartan is also doing some good guessing as well! Especially about the Strange Dog scenes being a prequel to Books 7-9.

Golladan

Yes Marco only cares about Marco. If it seems otherwise that's him being the manipulator he is.

Hans Engelen

See my buddy here gets it. That is it exactly. We have seen him manipulate his own son (which came out of his relation with Naomi, whom he manipulated too) shamelessly. Why would he be different for the rest of the people around him.

Varun Laks

To be fair, the book descriptions of the characters make that more obvious than in the show. In the books, Amos is described kind of overweight and not as physically imposing as Wes Chatham is for the show version of Amos. And book Bobbie is described as essentially being a spartan. So in the books, the fact that Bobbie would defeat Amos in a fight is basically a foregone conclusion. That being said, I agree even in the show, Bobbie is clearly the more skilled of the two in a fight. As Wes Chatham said, Amos is a professional amateur but Bobbie is a true professional. Mono e mono, she'd win every time.

Bill B.

Came here to say exactly that!

Bill B.

It looked like Bobbie expected some shenanigans from Amos, and she used some sort of Akido move on him. Brilliant!

Bill B.

Marco needs to die a horrific death. He is the worst of every evil thing a human being can be. Absolutely loved the Amos and Bobbie bonus scene, I could watch those two for hours! Avasarala steals every scene she is in. Another incredible space battle! 2 in a row! Wish Holden hadn’t disabled that torpedo. I don’t care that Filip was on it and Naomi was watching. Marco needs to die ASAP. I’ve watched this season before but I binged it so fast I only remember the storyline on Laconia. Everything else is brand new, I’m loving it!!!

Bill B.

His willingness to sacrifice so many on Ceres for “the greater good” or whatever BS he tells himself at night reminded me of Stalin, both in how he treated the Ukraine in the 30s and his own troops in WWII.

Hans Engelen

Now that you mention it, yes, it does.

Paul

I wonder who among us would be strong enough to directly kill the son of the woman we love (obviously for an extremely good reason?) I think it'd be the "correct" move at the macro level, but I couldn't do it, I know that.

Ryan

Holden holds the L with this episode. He could have ended the war and prevented how many thousands more from dying from Marcos command. I understand thats his girlfriends son, but he's a murderer and the enemy. That was such a selfish decision on his part and others will pay with their lives. I really like Holden and agree with most of his decisions, but this one really annoyed me lol. Can't let emotions get in the way of what could have been such a massive win for the war effort.

Paul

It's one of the few times Holden isn't in moral mode, but instead becomes only so human, flawed. I would be too in his shoes.

Joan Monroe

I agree completely and for some reason, this time through, it's making me even angrier. If Naomi had the courage to not beg for her son's life, I wish Holden would have the courage to choose the many over the few, especially knowing how Drummer's mercy played out.

Gail Ferguson

I LOVE you mentioned code-switching! I came in the comment on that and I see you covered it. It is a real-world occurance for tons of people in different situations that people in a 'majority' cultural situation wouldn't normally notice and never have to consider in their own settings.

Varun Laks

It's a tricky situation for a few reasons. Although it is ultimately not why he did it, for one thing, I do think there's merit to Holden's initial impulse that killing Marco in that situation and turning him into a martyr would ultimately only embolden the Free Navy. Marco is a solid strategist, but ultimately he may be even more dangerous as a symbol. The Free Navy would still have most of its fleet without Marco, and its possible that a person who isn't as petty as Marco would take over and make the situation even worse. Marco's death at this stage wouldn't end the war itself (unlike Drummer's chance in S4). On top of that, and as others have said, there is of course the human element of Holden potentially causing the death of Naomi's son. Holden has always been someone who does what he feels is right in the moment, and will work on fixing any potential consequences of that later. But the right thing in the moment is what's important to him. It's a moment that's not all too dissimilar from the famous moment at the end of game/ season one of Last of Us. It's certainly selfish from an objective point of view, but it's also something I think most of us would do in that situation if we are being completely honest with ourselves. Unless the situation is literally kill someone or millions die (like with the doctors at Eros in S2), Holden doesn't seem to believe in killing one to save one hundred because in his mind he can save the hundred after saving the one. I also think this episode very intentionally shows how differently Holden and Marco act while in charge. Marco starts this episode blaming everyone but himself for the failure to destroy the Roci. Holden on the other hand, even though it wouldn't specifically be his hand killing Filip, can't help but feel responsible. I think it speaks a lot to Naomi's line of Holden being the type of man Marco pretends to be. Because I also think he is fully ready to answer to the consequences of that decision.

Spartan will enjoy that Bonus Content scene in the books. It's notably more violent, and Bobbie is considerably larger than she is in the show. Amos is arguably *tougher* in the books than he is in the show, but Bobbie is also several notches up from how they could depict her on screen. Spartan REALLY needs to read the novels! Non-spoiler (!!), one-sentence character quotes from Book 2 and Book 7 below: ... ... ---start of quick, non-spoiler book talk--- [BOOK 2] Caliban's War - Amos: In "Caliban’s War", Amos says of Bobbie, “When it comes to scrapes, I’m what you might call a talented amateur. But I’ve gotten a good look at that woman in and out of that fancy mechanical shell she wears. She’s a pro. We’re not playing the same sport.” [BOOK 7] Persepolis Rising - Amos quote & Bobbie quote: In "Persepolis Rising", Amos says to Bobbie, “If I need to beat someone up, I've got a whole station full of possibilities. But if I'm looking to lose a fight, I'm pretty much down to just you.” Similarly, in Persepolis Rising, Bobbie once comments about Amos that it would be easier for her to kill him than it would be for her to beat the shit out of him. Meaning that beating him up (but *not* killing him) is, for her, the “harder” or less direct choice compared to simply killing him. When this scene comes up in the book, they. get. into. it. ... ... ---end of book talk--- It's important to remember that the Roci crew *is* talented people, but Bobbie had literally dedicated her life to *training* for war - the big war, and the skirmishes along the way. The scene in this episode where she took over responsibilities for fire control - She quickly read the Pella's tactical pattern AND delivered the pivotal strike in the *very next* volley. She is [quite literally] heads and shoulders above everyone else around her. She is both a highly trained special forces soldier, *and* immensely physically gifted (she's like 2 meters tall in the novels!). The show obviously has some limitations on viable actor physicality, but the character of Bobbie is unequivocally well-trained in violence.

Trepanation21

I think it's easy for comment section trigger pullers to declare how annoyed they are with Holden in this moment, but I'm not into judging people for their humanity when they chose *not* to kill. My opinion on this is not an assessment of right, wrong, the politics or practicality of the context. It's simply affording a human being the empathy of nuance when they chose not to kill, *especially* in a moment where they would have been responsible for killing the child of someone he loves, and dozens of unnamed crew-members. That said, whether in the show and/or the novels, Holden and Naomi grapple with this moment, with all the gravity it deserves. It's like declaring that you'd prefer all the evil people be executed to save untold innocents... But *somebody* has to be an executioner then, right? Somebody or bodies are bearing the burden of killing. And to humans, especially good ones, there's an immeasurable burden and cost on one's humanity with every moment and degree of violence they perpetrate and participate in. Unfortunately, I've arrived at this sense of it through experience, and have had several decades to reflect on multiple relevant moments, in multiple contexts. Plenty of people think and will think that Holden was wrong for it, but I don't think I could blame him for his choice even one bit. It's extremely human of him, and an affirmation of his character (even when he himself is conflicted about these moments). Besides, he makes a solid, strategic point about the reluctance to martyr Inaros.

Regarding the spar... you just have to remember Bobby is a Mars marine trained for this and in this universe that seemingly puts her as one of the top trained people you can be. Strength vs training I'll bet training every day, just like if you put a top trained boxer vs an amateur that's bigger and stronger I'll go the trained boxer any day.
