Chloe

Finally!!! I’m so excited for this

Dogman

they used a lot of miniatures and paintings for the big sets and space scenes. Its mostly practical effects, but in the 90's George Lucas decided to go back and re-edit the films, using the cgi and advancement in technology at the time to enhance it (while also adding/changing things for no good reason lol #HanShotFirst)

The Magician

Bail Organa (Leia’s adopted father) died when her home planet was destroyed by the Death Star.

Adinium

No Alderaan was not Padme’s planet. That was Naboo. Also the reason the Death Star wasn’t as powerful in Rogue One was because they only fired it with single reactor ignition as a demonstration rather than the full power of the station.

Holly

Re: Obi-Wan. Remember how at the end of the prequel movies Yoda says to Obi-Wan that Qui-Gong discovered a way to communicate beyond death? I always interpreted his meaning to Vader here about how he'd be stronger after he was struck down to mean that. He mastered that. And that's how he's able to communicate with Luke in the cockpit. Just my sense.

Holly

I love watching prequels. Discovering how things came about after the fact. Like watching the young version of the X Men after the movies from the early 2000s. It's crazy this direction! But I'm glad you're glad. I will say, it makes you guys SOOO invested in Anakin (giving me Billy from Stranger Things vibes!). Whereas I loved just knowing him as Vader.

Holly

My issue with these movies wasn't the graphics. It's really good. My issue with this is the acting, storytelling and dialogue. Luke's uncle and aunt die and you'd barely know it. Leia's whole planet dies and she's all "Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?" The depth and weight of the issues aren't there, like you felt in Rogue One. Mark Hamill is soooo whiny as Luke! LOL. Even Harrison Ford as Han is very glib. Like the weight of what's happening isn't felt in the OG movies, IMO. It's more adventure (like Indiana Jones). The sense of weight comes in the much more recent ones bc of the change that happened in storytelling, conveying realism, darkness and grit.

Holly

I don't know if they retconned the R2 relationship to Obi-Wan or not but he didn't ever own him in the prequels and he did have his memory wiped, right? But it's possible they retconned it.

Holly

Those edits make it so much more watchable. I caught a few clips of the OG version and you know how "moving images" on film had that crackling effect? That, the muted/dull veneer and so much more made it tough.

The Magician

It’s covered in the Obi Wan series.

The Magician

Empire Strikes Back is the best movie in the series and carries everything super well.

EdReedFan20

And you can read about Senator Organa's (and his wife, Queen Breha's) last moments in the short story "Eclipse" in the Episode IV edition of From a Certain Point of View, a book series of 40 short stories that celebrate the respective 40th Anniversaries of the movies from the Original Trilogy. For dramatic purposes, the destruction of Alderaan is a bit longer than the movie portrays (though, I do think in reality, the destruction wouldn't be as quick as the movie). It definitely leaves a knot in your stomach, seeing they know there is nothing that can be done and just embracing their last moments.

Timmy Saxton

I’m pretty sure anakin was created the way pudgy was explaining, to bring balance to the force.. which technically he did considering the number of sith and jedi lol

Spaz 'n' Megz

Should've watched the Obiwan series before this

Travis Gray

Obi Wan said he never owned a droid he didn't own r2d2 it was Anakin's. And planet destroyed was alderon not naboo. Padme planet didn't destroyed it was sente Bali Leia's adopted father he n his wife n planet were killed.

Travis Gray

Obi wan become one with the force he died but lives in the force his body went into the force.

Richiep

its so bad though

Travis Gray

I love that your watching and reacting to the star wars films in chronological order it's been such a great experience and perspective keep up the great work can't wait for your reactions to episodes 5&6.

Evan Keal

Tarkin who was in the scene where they say the senate was eliminated was also in rouge one. His face was CGI in Rouge One

Grace

Technically, senator Organa said to “have the protocol droid’s mind wiped” but R2’s not a protocol droid, so I always assumed his memory was still intact 🤷‍♀️

Grace

Hear me out… Pudgey is R2D2 and Spartan is C-3P0 😭😂 not 100%, but enough that it tips over my giggle box 💕

Julien

You guys seem to believe that without the prequels you wouldn't have liked this as much or it wouldn't have resonated as much. Maybe. But there is a reason this movie was so huge, and this original trilogy dwarfed anything in cinema in terms of popularity. THIS, is what made Star Wars. THIS, is THE Star Wars. And no one had the context you had. What this means is that the trilogy OBVIOUSLY stands on its own. It's just hard for you to imagine because you started with the prequel trilogy. What you see as advantages from having watched PT, others (like me) see as a detriment/distraction from full being immersed in the story as told without constantly looking back. You have all the background already so this movie simply doesn't seem as fresh as it was intended to be, and that's a shame. Finally, the OT was meant to be experienced with this trilogy in mind. I'm glad you enjoyed the PT when you watched it. But experiencing it as a prequel (young Anakin, young Obi-Wan) is truly something else. It's like experiencing Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon when they were young. Having watched Game of Thrones it what would make that story rich to the fullest extent. Ultimately, the sad thing about the order you watched it in is that you will probably never fully appreciate the OT as it was meant to be seen, or why it took the world by storm. Oh well.

lackingnames

Im sorry but the reason they wont fully appreciate it is because its old as shit. And 90% of the reason why it was so amazing back in the day is because.. it was back in the day. Realistically this film isn't all that good today, it was the novelty of it that took the world by storm.

EdReedFan20

The lightsaber combat in this was purposely meant to be slow and plodding, as George Lucas originally intended a lightsaber to be as weighty as a Knight's broadsword, which requires deliberate swings and two hands on the hilt. However, he realized that doesn't lead to the most exciting fight scenes, so he dropped that idea. So, many fans chalk up the scene to Obi-Wan being old and Vader (just days before) using a lot of his energy and roughing up the rebels in that terrifying Rogue One scene.

Julien

Film has been around for more than 100 years and silent classics from a 100 years ago remain infinitely more riveting than much of current slop. There are people every day discovering the OT and loving it because apparently unlike you, they are not limited by technology in their appreciation of great storytelling.

Elias Ikari

1970s film is not really "old", Hollywood was around for 65 years before Star Wars. Regardless it just seems miserable to live with the belief that anything "old" is automatically bad. There are so many wonderful films from those times. "Star Wars" itself is just a damn good movie - from the pacing, scripting, editing, performances, effects, and of course the music

The_Paige_Master

The best movie in this saga 🫶🏽 then Blue Harvest: Family Guy’s version of A New Hope lol classic

LX

Kashykk is the home planet of the wookies it shows it on episode III along with chewbaca who's helping protect yoda

LX

Pudgey was also right it is the same actor from Rogue one they just used another ad a stand in on rogue one, than used cgi to replace the actors face with Peter Cushing who was Grand Moff Tarkin in this film Vaders equal as far as ranking under Emperor Palpatine until dying on the death star of course.

Liam Smith

You mentioned how the lightsaber fights stood out compared to the more modern movies. I was watching an episode from the Corridor Crew YouTube channel recently where they were reviewing stunts from movies and Star Wars was mentioned. They said how in the original trilogy, it was more realistic as every stab or swing of the lightsaber was intended to kill the opponent, whereas in the modern movies its more a dance of choreography deliberately intended to wow the audience rather than getting the job done.

Julie

R2 does remember everything! they only wiped the memory of the "protocol droid", aka C3PO

mFFb

Nah, It has some dumb moments, but over all its pretty awesome

mFFb

This movie was years ahead in terms of special effect, thanksn to Industrial Light and Magic. Its actually not CGI, but rather miniatures of ships. On very detailed backgrounds. Also, the way he just taps R2 on the head to get the recording of Leia... They recognize each other.

Miggiexrcf

as a kid I remember watching this for the first time as a re-run on tv in the mid 90's, i was blown away and been a fan ever since! can't wait for the other reactions

Grant Gould

I’m sure others have already said this, but only the added “special edition” scenes like Jabba are CGI — all of the original effects were done with models and miniatures. When these movies came out in the ‘70s & ‘80s the visuals were mind-blowing! :) But yeah, with Star Wars, the true magic is in the characters. (And yes, we totally thought Luke & Leia were gonna hook up before we found out they’re siblings. Hah)

Grant Gould

And I’m actually pretty happy you’re watching these chronologically. It’s giving me a whole new perspective & appreciation on how you’re experiencing it. :)

Julianjjz

I wouldnt say this because all of this gets explained anyway. You are kind of spoiling it

Frontispice

Remember that it was the first SW movie to ever come out. So it's normal if there are some things that don't quite match up between this and the prequels (for example, Obi-Wan not remembering R2). Lucas tried to make things match the best he could when filming the prelogy. For example, when Luke says "You fought in the clone wars ?" : it's really amazing to think that Lucas had already imagined part of what we see in the prequels back in 1977.

Frontispice

Also, don't know if you noticed, but in every single SW movie, a character says "I have a bad feeling about this". ;)

Wim Beresford

Not sure if it’s been mentioned or not, but Obi-Wan said “I don’t remember OWNING a droid,” which is true.

Tray Hard

I love how Pudgey added extra comments in the beginning, which helped Spartan to keep his pace in matter of reading, since the text moved slower than he speaks. That was kinda smart and sweet of her :)

Travis Gray

No I'm not he literally died in a new hope. Spartan and Pudgey watched A New Hope they saw Vader cut Kenobi down I didn't spoil anything I don't know what Ur talkin about.

Jamie Neill

If you remember the end fight in part 3, Obi-Wan picks up Anakin’s lightsabre before he leaves him burning. The Obi Wan series will add some cool stuff between part 3 & 4. Lastly, the ‘hello there’ from Obi-Wan when he meets Luke was said to General Grievous as well, a cool catchphrase for him. Glad you guys enjoyed!

Tray Hard

Absolutely. I had the same problem when watched it yesterday. From POV right now destroying the whole planet (Alderaan) seems like just unimaginable catastrophe, that had to be felt like one, but this film treats it like nothing, just a single cheesy line about voices screaming and silenced and it’s just to show us how powerful the Force is, not to mourn over the destruction of the planet with lot of people on it. Same about uncle and aunt of Luke - he couldn’t give less fuck about it than in the film, he literally smiles over some random Kenobi line in a minute after we saw the death of the closest people he had in his life. It’s just ridiculous. I think in non-chronological order that wouldn’t even bother me that much, but when you already have some connection to this universe, that feels really weird

blizzity

this film is why C-3PO is my fav character lmao

thebirdcatcher1

Thabk you guys for putting the YouTube versions on Patreon earlier. Its the only reason to do patreon and yall do it right

Fonze

highly recommend watching/reacting to star wars scene 38 :) Brings a whole new perspective to how the obi-vader fight could’ve been like if made now. Hope you guys see this!

Crez0le

Any chance on you guys reacting to star wars the clone wars animated movie and show in chronological order?

Andre Bauer

I don't consider that show canon, personally. I hated it, especially how annoying little Leia was and how stupid she was behaving. And the Anakin Obiwan anti-climax was one of the dumbest things ever. SPOILER: he doesn't make sure to properly kill Anakin AGAIN?! No f* way.

VII DEAD

Idk where you’re getting R2 doesn’t remember???

Hiigara

Lmao the entire discussion here is so dumb just because I warned you the leia thing would ruin your clean run through.

Giuseppe DeGaetano

You can't say it was a novelty when other amazing sci-fi series were already hitting their stride were popular for a decade beforehand, like star trek the original series started in 66. Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes all massive and loved sci-fi movies proceeding SW.

Giuseppe DeGaetano

R2 mind wasn't wiped and he never owned R2, it was Padme's droid she gave to Anakin. Obi-Wan didn't own him and hasn't seen him in 3.

Giuseppe DeGaetano

It's not that he doesn't know R2 it just doesn't belong him, Luke asks specific questions like "He claims to be the property of a Obi-Wan Kenobi. Is he a relative of yours? Do you know who he's talking about?" after sitting down and contemplating upon hearing his government name he responds "Of course I know him, he's me." Luke: "Well, then the droid does belong to you." Obi's response is "I don't seem to remember ever owning a droid. Very interesting." Because it's true, he never owned R2. It was Padme's droid she gave to Ani. Also Obi-Wan's first line to R2 is "Come here my little friend don't be afraid." There is a big distinction between "I don't own a droid." and "I've never meet this droid in my life."

Lynda Olson

Seeing this on the big screen in 1977 was like my childhood. I’m grateful to have lived through seeing every one of these in the theater and just seeing how Star Wars just pervaded our culture for like almost 50 years now. Every new series 1-3 and 7-9 was like hype to an extreme all through the culture.

Mitchel

Yes, Darth Plaguis and Darth Sidious (Palpatine) influenced the Force for Anakin's birth.

Mitchel

So before CGI, films used practical effects. Crafted models, stages, in star wars case for all the space battles and stuff, miniature models.

Jonathanese

I just remembered. You need to see "SC-38 Reimagined". Some skilled fans remade the Vader/Kenobi fight scene here to match the style of the prequels, and reference the fight on Mustafar. It's a but jarring in context. But it hits so hard.

tallb

The main disappointment with the original trilogy for me are the lightsaber duels, however because you understand and appreciate the characters and the heart and soul of the story you can get past it.

Alejandro Herrera

It's crazy how intuitive Pudgey is about a lot of the scenes. A lot of her commentary has been spot on. Y'all definitely need to go back and watch Kenobi the show that takes place between 3 and 4

RobChach

The issue you described is real but also I believe it obeys to some degree to the time when these original movies where made, the story is kind of basic good vs evil, and people of the time were not as open to dwell on individual feelings and internal turmoil publicly as much, you were suppose to be more stoic and control (or suppress) your emotions, and 1977 was just so close to the end of ww2, just thirty two years! not even a generation had past. Also, I think the context of the story itself has to be considered, the characters had been under empire rule and violent oppression for decades by this time, people are being killed right and left for no clear reason and no justification or explanation or rule of law, or human rights or anything like that exists anymore, the emperor's word is all. Under those kind of circumstances people desensitize to be able to continue to go on in general, even more if they are in the front lines of the conflict. I have had conversations with people living in violent and extreme circumstances for long periods of time and one thing that stands out is how people can numb themselves to those circumstances, even more if they started seeing that as children, they may see a person murder in the morning and go to work like nothing happened in the afternoon, see people dead in the streets on their way to school and expect to pay attention in class... their motto "just don't think about it and keep moving on..." not the healthiest way to live but in those moments the only way to keep living for many.

Kieran Rice

21:00 yes, but he was entirely CGI in Rogue One!

Sasha Bazine

Pudgey I beg you what gloss combo are you wearing in this video it looks so good
