I felt bad for Rita during the date. Then you realise that’s been their relationship the entire series. Even in the first episode, he leaves their date to investigate a crime scene. Rita was clearly dealt a very bad card in life, from an abusive mother to an abusive husband to finally a serial killer boyfriend who put her in harms way. She didn’t deserve any of it and part of me can’t help but lose a level of sympathy I had for Dexter. He played this innocent single mother and got her killed. I’d argue the show never really recovers past this point.

No, Dexter reveals in one of his first monologues that Debra introduced him to Rita and that Rita had just escaped an abusive relationship.

Deb responded to a domestic violence call about Paul and Rita.

I understand what Spartan means about the crying. But, I have to tell you, as FANTASTIC an actor as Michael C Hall is the one thing he CAN"T do is cry. I watched him for 5 years in Six Feet Under and 10 years in Dexter and he just can't cry. I don't know if it is because his father died when he was 11 and he had to be "the man of the house" or what, but he just can't. He tried several really emotional scenes in Six Feet Under and he faked it pretty well, but he didn't actually cry. Its just not in his wheelhouse for some reason. My hubby can watch a dog video and tear up in a flash, LOL

I could be wrong, but I believe Debra helped Rita with a domestic case against Paul and that's how Debra knew her.

I love the scene where Dexter breaks down it feels so realistic. We’ve never seen Dexter cry and Michael C. Hall does an amazing job of shrieking and crying just like someone who has never cried before.
