Which version of The Hobbit Movies should we watch (Patreon)

Content

We have decided to react to The Hobbits after LotR. We have heard your many other movie suggestions and we will slowly get through them, but we want to complete The Lord of the Rings journey properly.

This is our follow up question: Should we watch the Theatrical or Extended version(s)?

Comments

Chris Button

Theatricals for hobbits forsure extended makes it too drawn out in my opinion

Kevin DiSalvo

What kind of monsters are actually voting for the theatrical versions?

Augustine Lee

Just theatrical. Let’s not get crazy here. The movies already stretch out the story for more than it needs to be. It’s a trilogy based off of one not long book.

joseph wells

Theatrical but for the the third movie extended If you want a lot better longer battle hehe

Fernando F.

Always extended. Theatrical versions drop too much on the floor because of commercial issues. Those voting for theatrical version probably are cruel to puppies and kitties...

Captainivy1

Extended isnt AS important watching these films from what I recall (like it is for return of the king, without spoiling). But overall, they still improve the films to me. Also I think all extended scenes in all 3 films together is barely 1 hour extra content, so might as well I say

Kevin Conlin
>>114106364

True cruelty to puppies and kittens would be making them watch the extended cut of 3 movies that already take long to watch than actually reading the source material

Shawn Brink
>>114106364

You can read the book 3 times by the time all 3 movies end. Making them watch these movies at all is cruelty. There is only one good Hobbit movie and it is a cartoon.

Fernando F.
>>114106364

since I'm not 8 years old anymore, I can handle a few more minutes of an extended version 🧡😛

Fernando F.
>>114106364

read a book? I wonder how good the soundtrack is on one of those things... let me know.

David

The theatrical versions are already unnecessarily extended versions so that would watching the extended extended version, and this is from someone who firmly believes in only watching the extended version and never watching the theatrical version of LOTR.

Icee

Extended.

David
>>114106266

What kind of monsters are actually voting for the extended version?

Steven Enderley

extended for sure and its totally not bc that's the only copies I have :)

David

It is bad enough that you guys voted for them to watch these movies that are about seventy or more percent not from or even in the spirit of the Hobbit book, and in a very bad way. But now you want them to watch the versions that are eighty or more percent not from the book? I just have one question for fans of these movies and especially the extended versions, What color is the sky in your world?

Joe

Theatrical version

Emma

Extended.

JonSnow21

I think you should’ve included Harry Potter in this poll and see what comes out on top lol.

The extended editions don't really improve it much imho unlike the LotR extendeds. A lot of people also don't have as easy access to the extended editions, so they will be forced to watch the edited versions even if they want to watch the uncuts. Its a short childrens book that already should NEVER have been stretched into 3 movies, why would I want it stretched out even more? A lot of people that wanted to watch the LoTR trilogy uncuts couldn't find the extended editions on any of their streaming services or would have had to full on pay for them. Different availability depending on country and stuff.

Tylor Stafford
>>114107899

Facts. They act like they HAVE to watch it. There’s a vote for a reason. Voters from the minority are always gonna have something to say because they’re mad they’re being out voted lol

crispy chicken

In my opinion the scenes that were cut in the theatrical version were cut for good reasons (too drawn out, didn't add to the story, were a bit cringy, etc). Therefore my vote goes to Theatrical version.

SuddenImpulse
>>114106364

The cruel part was making a 300 page book into 3 movies. The extended editions are also far less available on streaming services internationally, so it will require more people to watch the edited editions vs uncut, for those that prefer the uncuts. I think it was a reasonable compromise for LotR because the extended editions add some really good stuff and are the central story, but I don't recall them being as beneficial to the Hobbit trilogy

SuddenImpulse
>>114107899

My bigger concern is that the extended editions are far less available on streaming services internationally, so it will require more people to watch the edited editions vs uncut, for those that prefer the uncuts. I think it was a reasonable compromise for LotR because the extended editions add some really good stuff, but I don't recall them being as beneficial to the Hobbit trilogy, and the Hobbit trilogy shouldn't have been 3 movies to begin with.

SuddenImpulse
>>114108607

I don't think they want to go straight into an 8 movie series owned by the same company that gave them almost 3 weeks of headaches and like 25 re-uploads with their insanely strict copyright/editing stuff. Its many many hours of work and going through the movies again to re-edit. Pudgey actually got so stressed by it she ended up laid up sick for half a week. It put them behind on their other content and they had to work overtime. Have to remember that editing movies, especially these big ones, is a different beast entirely from shows and this is the very first movie series they have edited. I think they just want a little break from the super hard movie edits. They will probably want to take a break from the big trio movie series after this and do singular movies or ones that are far less of a copyright/editing hassle for a bit.

Leenis

Remember, the LOTR is based off of 3 adult books and The Hobbit it based off of one children's book. It can't even successfully fill up 3 regular run length movies. Then when you start to read about the behind the scenes rewrites that fundamentally changed things, not in service of a different medium but in service of profit, and you start to see how they mistreated the dwarfs, and I think the extended is too much pain.

JonSnow21
>>114108607

Yea but Harry Potter films aren’t as long as lotr films and im confused because so many people on this patreon want Harry Potter next so why would they delay it further especially when last time they just did lotr without a poll when I can bet money HP would’ve probably beaten lotr in a poll , they’re my favourite reactors but I will definitely unsubscribe at least until they do it because many of us wanted it before lotr.

That's how I feel about the lord of the rings extended versions. Its always best for people to watch the theatrical versions first but either way I'm excited to see their reaction!

Eddie House

Ive never seen the trilogy. Im down for theatrical here.

Dasypodidae

You state that you wanna complete the LOTR journey properly. What about rings of power? Are you considering this? It's only one season up to now.

Farbod

I watched the extended versions about a year ago and I remember liking them a lot better than I did the theatrical versions.

spartanandpudgey
>>114115231

we are not considering any new series at this stage. we want to focus on movies for a while alongside Breaking Bad.

Dom Gray

The extended editions all the way!! It gives you more time in middle earth!!

Corey
>>114108607

Harry Potter is overrated and it's made for 10 year olds.

JonSnow21
>>114108607

Looks like someone’s never watched HP considering from the 3rd film and up , it’s far more dark and adult than lotr and I love. lotr but no way u think HP is more childish when they don’t even kill off major characters in lotr.

JonSnow21
>>114108607

Well I obviously don’t want them to get sick from overworking lol , like I said I’m a huge fan of them but first of all I find it hard to believe that they got more lotr requests considering Harry Potter reactions get a lot more views on average compared to lotr on YouTube and why not do a poll with the big 3 just to see what would come out on top because I have a strong sense that both HP and Star Wars would’ve gotten higher but now they’re doing the hobbit , a borderline garbage trilogy and as long as HP and more editing per film and ur trying to use the editing as an excuse when I guarantee a HP would destroy the hobbit in a poll . Like man in not angry or anything and I’ve probably been fans of them before you but I just want a guarantee that the next big franchise they do will be Harry Potter considering it’s a lot more similar to Lotr compared to Star Wars which is a whole different genre and what I said about unsubbing , I literally said I would subscribe back once they started HP but I am loving their breaking bad reactions so I probably won’t unsubscribe . And I’ll say it again they are my favourite reactors and I watch a lot soo me having minor criticism after being part of their GOT and HOTD journey from the start and a member of this Patreon for many months is my right as a paying customer.

Many people won't be able to watch the uncut version alongside them unless they agree to pay 15 dollars for the extended version, even though they have the theatrical version laying around at home. That sucks

Sudden says it all. many people won't be able to watch the uncut version alongside them unless they agree to pay 40 dollars for the extended versions, even though they have the theatrical versions laying around at home. That sucks.. also theatrical versions are free on prime.

>>114108607

Just face it, more people wanted them to react to LoTR because it is far better. Harry Potter is made for children. It does the old "chosen one" trope and it does it exceptionally poorly.

Extended are way better for the hobbit movies

calum1
>>114116309

Too bad we all paying for the patreon, yall can fork out a few dollars for the better versions of a movie

MO
>>114116309

It's about 40 dollars for all 3 movies.. movies that we already have seen for the most part. You would be an idiot to pay another 40 dollars for an hour or two of bonus content. Theatrical is free on prime on the other hand.

MO
>>114107899

Facts, I won't pay 40 dollars to watch the uncut version alongside them

MO
>>114108607

The books are actually very good in my opinion. The plot is much better explained and it all makes more sense. Unfortunately the movies didn't deliver on that. HP is a great story but LOTR is a much better movie adaption.

MO
>>114121656

The theatrical version is free with amazon prime.. it makes so much more sense for them to watch the version that is accessible for most people without paying 40 bucks for the extended versions.

Anthony Brown

Huge huge lotr fan here, and even I wouldn't recommend the extended ones for these. The extended scenes just tend to be legolas cgi or stuff that really should have been cut. Instead of the original trilogy each extended scene includes something else from the books.

JonSnow21
>>114108607

Bro the first lotr is too long and puts me too sleep , oh and what’s far more popular, oh yea that’s Harry Potter and deathly hallows part 2 is more critically acclaimed than any lotr .

calum1
>>114121656

Its the worse version, why should they experience a lesser version cause some people dont want to pay

Murshete
>>114108607

@SuddenImpulse r they able to interlace one off movies between the HP movies. Most other reactors do tht typically and tht way they get editing breaks regardless?

Zeek

Harry Potter isn’t one of those “ guaranteed to like movie series”,Especially if you’re an adult . I tried rewatching during Christmas , it was hard

the extended versions are full of childish scenes with awful cgi so not everyone shares your opinion thats why they are making a poll

Dasypodidae

If you choose your words differently I'm willing to discuss why the hate is very exaggerated and sits mainly with LOTR purists.

Icee
>>114107358

Well I own the extended version and I prefer it, so I don't know what to tell you. The poll is here for you to vote. No need to spam under everyone's comment.

Murshete
>>114108607

ofc, thts a fair and valid point but u could say tht for any movie. For example, i only got thru half of spartan and pudgeys lotr: the 2 towers and i paid for the extended version of the movie as well and it just wasnt for me. Personally i just wanna see their reaction to HP, a series of movies i love, to see if they like it too, the same way u guys love lotr and r getting the reactions for it

Leenis
>>114124007

They should of made one movie and been more faithful to the spirit of the book.

Jon

if you gonna watch something, anything, watch the extended version.... maybe except for those ones : 1- those movies are not really awesome, and 2- the "extras" scenes don't add very much... so, if you guys wanna match it, I get it... but there's no need for "more"

Justin Morgan
>>114106261

Pretty sure anyone who would care enough to watch a 4 hour long Hobbit movie alongside some internet reactors would likely already have the extended versions...

ShanB

Wish you guys would've asked this question for the LOTR movies. I've never seen them and tried to start my journey with you guys but I couldn't find the extended version anywhere :( . Was way too hard to try to sync up my version with what you guys were watching.

Immortal 56

100% watch the extended version for the 3rd Movie. Makes it soooo much better.

Beclou
>>114115231

I'm not a LOTR purist, I don't think the series is the worst thing on tv, it does get a lot of hate because of racism and misogyny. It is also not that good a show. Like i if you aren't familiar with the lore and don't think about it too much, but it has minimal logic. It kind of reminded me of GOT later seasons where they had some ideas of things they wanted to (The Undying Lands, The forging of the rings, Numenor visions, Mordor, the Balrog) then shoe horned a story in to make it fit. It was very very unfaithful to the established characters and lore (e.g. Galadriel basically doing the opposite of her established story - it was obvious that they wanted her name as a recognisable element and nothing else). The scale was odd (the town of Bree, or the Shire in Fellowship looks bigger and more lived in than the entire Southlands kingdom which was seemingly only populated by that one village), plots didn't make sense if you thought about them too much (why did Galadriel trust H based on circumstantial evidence only to get a different scroll of evidence later? Why did those witch ladies shapeshift but then shift back to themselves before the good characters had got close enough to be fooled by their trap? Why did the Numenoreans know to go to that one village? Why hadn't the elves noticed those massive trenches in the Southlands? And so on). It was also pretty obvious that they had planned for the "twist" in the finale and were therefore stalling the actual plot because they know anyone familiar with the source material would know Sauron is the one who turns up to help make the rings.) I thought the fight scenes and costumes also looked a bit crap and the dialogue was quite poor at times. Overall if you know nothing about the source material it's probably okay but not that exciting, if you know even the basics of the source material it's bad.

SuddenImpulse
>>114108607

@Murshete its certainly possible, but some people will get pretty mad having to wait between movies so they might be worried about that.

Dasypodidae
>>114115231

I've seen LOTR before watching rings of power. Nor read the books only the hobbit. There were some slow episodes but I enjoyed rings of power because of the visuals, seeing the origins of characters like Galadriel and Isildur. Seeing Moria and Numerdor in it's full glory. Yes, I'm probably one of the people who isn't that critical and just enjoys the ride. But I think I'm not the only one and then it's a pleasant addition to the LOTR universe. I think IMDB scores are good gauge of what the average 'casual' watcher thinks about a movie/show and rings of power scores a 7 so that's more than ok. But thanks for your nuanced response. You might want to edit out a few big spoilers in case S&P want to watch in the future.

SuddenImpulse
>>114115231

I am not a LotR purist at all, and I thought the dialogue, plot writing, and character writing with few exceptions was pretty C to D tier. Some of the actors and plotlines were quite good, others were quite bad. Theres also a lot of logic issues with some of the writing. Its just a very low quality show outside the visuals and like 2 plotlines imho. There are just soooo many issues with it. It easily could have been so much better than it was imho. I have never read the books, and I don't know much about the actual lore and also realize its an adaptation so I don't have a lot of this "purist" mindset with the show but even the few things I do know...they massively and egregiously changed some of the lore completely unnecessarily and for the worst, and they made real big deal moments into minor ones. Even then, 90% of my criticisms of the show have nothing to do with the "purity" of the content. I also generally follow IMDB scores moreso, but there is definitely a lot of contention over the show. IMDB has it at a 7, Rotten Tomatoes has an audience score of 38%. If you look at the IMDB scoring its also a mess, there were a lot of people giving nonsense scores either because they hated it or wanted to combat review bombing. It has 335,000 reviews and 81k are 10 stars (which no one in their right minds would give it) and 55k are 1 star (which is clearly bad faith review bombing), so almost a third of the reviews are artificially distorted on IMDB.

Dasypodidae
>>114115231

Yeah, that last thing is really remarkable. I can only say that having watched it I enjoyed most of it. If I would rewatch it I would skip through certain parts yes. But I'm really glad with other parts as an enrichment of my LOTR experience.

David
>>114107899

The movies are from the book. If they want to make there own story they shouldn't use the name of the book and character names from the book. I have no problem with new stories just don't make new stories out of someone else's better existing story.

David
>>114107899

No worries I won't be watching it with them I was just trying to look.out for them and save them time and boredom. Especially if they end up reading the book later and realize how much better it could have been as one movie that stuck to the superior book story and characters.

ShanB
>>114140213

Thanks I'm in the U.S. so that could be it since I usually watch hbo max on my tv. Will try it out using my vpn on my pc!

SuddenImpulse
>>114140213

S&P used the US version of HBO max for the LotR extended edition reactions (Both LotR extended and Hobbit extended editions are on there). So a VPN shouldn't be necessary if you live in the US. They should sync up exactly with their copy if your using US HBO max.

Barrie

I voted to watch the Hobbit, but I also think that the theatrical version is a lot better viewing experience for both reactor, and the person watching the reaction.

SuddenImpulse
>>114106261

I'm not sure how one necessarily follows the other. I like tons of movies I would watch reactions for that I don't own or that I would watch through a certain subscription service. A lot of people wanted to watch the extended uncuts for Lord of the Rings with them but they didn't own the discs and their particular international country didn't have the extendeds available on any of the streaming services so they had to watch the edited ones instead.

SuddenImpulse
>>114106266

its not about the book man. lmao, its the fact the original content is already overstretched beyond all reason. Its not just about time in the world. A lot of people wanted to watch rings of power because its "more time in the world" but rings of power is awful.

SuddenImpulse
>>114108607

It's going to come at some point, the "not having at all" situation isn't happening, nor was it ever indicated that would be the case. Everyone wants different things at different priorities. People want a hundred different movies and a hundred different shows, but they can only do so many at a time, which means everyone that wants something else has to wait a bit unfortunately. There is not going to be any guarantee about what comes next because we aren't anywhere close to that decision point yet. That is at *minimum* weeks away due to the time it takes to watch, edit, and put out a trilogy with this level of copyright fiddling, and there will probably be a poll with multiple movies they are considering or something. I don't know. Chill guys. Patience is a virtue. =)

Justin Morgan
>>114115231

Why would you even suggest that? Who wants to watch reactors fall asleep to the worst show ever? They butchered Tolkiens work.

Scuba Steve
>>114115231

This ^^^ is also the mindset that many Tolkien fans including his close family had regarding the ORIGINAL trilogy…

Anthony Brown
>>114115231

Dont even bother with rings of power. Its a complete slaughtering of tolkiens lore. As a diehard fan of all of middle-earth having read the Silmarillion and other stories encompassed within. It has absolutely none of the real source material from this age... Instead it tries to destroy some loved characters like galadriel and elrond also with fake back stories. A majority of the story arcs are either completely fabricated or breaking lore (certain wizard showing up). Not to mention really bad acting, cgi, fights for no reason, looks of characters, terrible costumes, story devoid of logic, GoT S8 travel times, modern things leaking into it like 'elves stealing our jobz!', race swapping or trying to be feminist about the characters when in turn just doing the complete opposite of making every 'strong female' a stereotypical male (now the girls wear armor and do the bada$$ fighting! - seriously like 10 male elite elven warriors get taken down instantly and then galadriel pops up to slaughter every1 on her own in almost every scene), despite galadriel being the definition of feminity and power without a sword or armor. Not to mention how angry and arrogant she is in the show, a complete 180 of her true character.. Urgh I could go on for hours how they destroyed my favourite character galadriel. Just save yourself the pain and dont watch it and never let this stuff enter your mind as it has for me ^^

Sam

Hey guys, any expected date for when the Hobbit reactions will be here on Patreon? :)
