I’d agree that at this point Hank uses Heisenberg as sort of an excuse not to go to El Paso. He is invested in the case, but any reason not to go would’ve been fair game.

I guess it’s all kind of an ego thing. El Paso really pushed him down and trying to catch Heisenberg is his way of regaining a sense of self respect

Pudgey is 100 % right in this situation. Hank is obviously terrified of going back to el paso, as soon as he got the assignment again he goes deeper into the heisenberg investigation in order to distract himself from that fact and when his boss confronts him on it hank says so with an extremely fearful voice , after that he pretends its because he wants to stay for the heisenberg case but its not. He definitely wants to catch heisenberg but the immediate fear is the reason hes become far more determined
