Good evening ya'll, we're fine here after hurricane Helene. Much debris but no damage.

Thanks very much to those of you who sent your well wishes.

Got a review coming your way soon of Henry James' 'The Turn of the Screw' (Paid Link) - Excellent read.

Have a great weekend, and thanks so much as always for your continued support.

1. Book on my radar - The Holy Day by Christopher Norris

Quite the pithy premise on this one.

2. The First Ghost Stories

An interesting lecture by the Philologist and Assyriologist Irving Finkel from the channel Archeology Now about the Mesopotamian origins of the ghost story.

3. 14 Classic Works of Literature Hated By Famous Authors via Lithub

Wherein Mark Twain confesses a desire to dig up Jane Austen and “beat her over the skull with her own shinbone.”

Enjoyable piece. The ever-cantankerous Nabokov has 3 entries.

4. Jade Like Wine by Six Organs of Admittance Live

Solid performance of the dark and wistful folk of Ben Chesny, the man behind Six Organs of Admittance, and one of my favorite guitarists.

5. Jacob’s Ladder

Very well done horror film that simultaneously serves as a vicious criticism of the American Government during the Vietnam War.

A bust of Octavian, enemy of Antony and Cleopatra, at the St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts

Sam Hunt

"...the book of a self-taught working man, and we all know how distressing they are, how egotistic, insistent, raw, striking, and ultimately nauseating." Pretty open and unpleasant snobbery from Woolf.
