Good evening everyone, wishing you a nice weekend.

Recently posted my TBR 2025 if you haven't had the chance.

Stay warm out there and thanks so much for continuing to support the show.

1. A recent recommendation from friend and patron Chris, thank you so much: Emile Zola - The Beast Within (La Bete Humaine) (Paid Link)

The story of a man driven to murder by jealousy...but the sole witness of the murder is, himself, a man driven to murder.

Compelling premise.

I haven't yet had the pleasure of reading Zola, might start with this one.

2. An introduction to Obeah by Foreign Man in a Foreign Land

I wanted to get more acquainted with the subject before reading Zora Neale Hurtston's 'Tell My Horse', wherein Hurston explores Voodoo and the West African Carribean religion Obeah.

3. How I imagine the Singularity playing out

Kneel before Gog.

I'm planning on reading Cesare Pavese's 'The Moon and the Bonfires' this year.

Pavese's suicide was partially due to his rejection by the actress in this film, Constance Dowling.

4. "Genius Edward Teller Describes 1950s Genius John Von Neumann"

A riveting recollection of the man who is the subject of Benjamin Labatut's 'The Maniac'.

Great primer.

5. John Tejada - Farther and Fainter

Mellow grooves. Digging this track and the album it's from, Parabolas.

From the NOLA trip back in December, by Lynn Sargent

The Beast Within sounds very interesting. I haven’t read any Zola yet and this one sounds more compelling than some of his others. Might be a good place to start.

Leo Mitchell

Interesting Zola pick. Know nothing about him, but the plot you’re describing sounds reminiscent of his earlier, less mature work Thérèse Raquin which was pretty good murder fiction. Still among his most famous. Pretty good passage on painting in there I remember

Look forward to hearing your thoughts on Zola. I read three books from the Rougon-Macquart series last year and plan on digging in deeper in '25. I kicked things off with Nana and was hooked by the end. Followed that one up with L'Assommoir and then, my fav of the three, Germinal. Only 17 more books in the series to go. 😆
