Good evening everyone, hope you're having a fine Friday evening.

I posted a review of the obscure French author Jean-Pierre Martinet's 'With their Hearts in their Boots' yesterday, a grim but compelling book about failure. Recommended for fans of Crime Fiction, Houellebecq and Thomas Bernhard.

Have a great weekend.

1. Recent recommendation from friend and patron Robert, thank you very much: De Profundis by Oscar Wilde (Paid Link)

De Profundis is a letter Wilde wrote, while imprisoned, to his partner Alfred Douglas.

2. "When the American Dream Becomes a Nightmare: On the Loss of David Lynch" by Adam Lehrer

One more great piece of writing for David Lynch, written by Adam Lehrer, author of "Communions", which I reviewed a while back.

Like Adam, I too discovered Lynch through my mother, who told me "Eraserhead" was the scariest thing she'd ever seen.

It was difficult to get a copy of it in those days, but through the library, I managed to.

To this day I agree with her.

3. Marianne Faithfull - Why'd Ya Do It

Bold track.

Rest in Peace Marianne Faithfull.

4. Frozen Alligators

….Surprise twist.

5. Edmund Kemper

A clip from the documentary "The Killing of America".

My wife has been watching Mindhunter, which features among the serial killers, Edmund Kemper.

I was stunned when I first saw this interview with Kemper as a teenager.

His lucidity and good-natured humor concealed an unfathomable madness. He had, as the video informs us, an IQ of 136.

I don't champion serial killers, but Kemper is a fascinating demonstration that the human being is a complex and terrifying organism.

These guys are everywhere in our yard

What a fun coincidence that this week I came across a song by the darkwave band Dead Can Dance called De Profundis. The gothic atmosphere is THICK. Give it a listen if you feel so inclined. https://open.spotify.com/track/37vaNa0KFCyKTecvcCdtUk?si=JrtDMN1DROWKMdHurAo1BA My mother was a criminal psych student in the mid 80s, during the peak of the Bundy/Son of Sam/Nightstalker/etc frenzy. Her passion and knowledge for criminal psychology was passed down to me, and eventually I found myself watching Mindhunter with her. Fucking incredible show. Up there with True Detective season 1. It also led me down a rabbit hole of Ed Kemper research since he was the most interesting figure in that show, and a name totally foreign to me. He is, as you said, terrifying. Utterly terrifying. Watching video footage of Bundy reveals an external charm that only works for so long—his rotted soul soon enough seeps out of his mouth and eyes. Kemper, to me, feels so much more impenetrable. His often deadpan demeanor certainly makes me uneasy, but the occasional lapse into comedy and levity confuse me. I cannot get a read on him. The actor who portrays him in Mindhunter really nails that uncanniness about him. I could study Kemper for hours, for days even. To call him a specimen is apt.

Clifford you could share something every week for the next few years about David Lynch and I wouldn’t mind. Hope you’re doing well. ✌️
