An enormously influential bildungsroman set in Pre-Civil War America, about the friendship between a runaway boy named Huck Finn and his friend, a runaway slave named Jim, and their adventures together on the Mississippi.

This one hit me. I do not think a single scene in a book has ever made me cry so much.

A masterpiece. ...At least before Tom Sawyer shows up.

Cliff, I feel for you. Huck Finn is worth losing your shit for. Twain hits so many notes. Yeah, the ending is disturbing. But its stupidity shows the absurdity of bucking the system. What options were open to Huck to save Jim? Maybe violence but that‘s not Huck or Twain. We have to wsit fir Django Unchsined to make liberating violence an aesthetic option. Ultimately Jim issaved by a dea (?) ex machina: Widow Douglas had freed him. Another whimsical act from a white patron. Have you read Pudd‘nhead Wilson? My absolute favorite Twain.

That is a towering moment in American literature. And, yes, Tom Sawyer did not do any of us any favors. Merry Christmas, Cliff. Your emotion lifts you above all other critics.

Awesome review. Your emotion resonates so well … I think people breeze over classics for what they’re “supposed” to take out of it. Lose sight of why the author gave a damn to even write something down. That scene with Huck is human. Not academic or some dusty classic moment.

Awesome review. Do you plan on reading James by Percival Everett?
