Oh man, I've had a fascination with Detroit ever since the collapse. A lot of interesting things happening there: specifically the rise of urban farming, its cycling culture, and its hacker/maker culture. Plus, you've got beautiful upper Michigan within reach and reasonable proximity to Toronto, NYC, Chicago, Madison, and Minneapolis for that matter (a day's drive in each case). You're going to love the snow!
