I totally agree with your opinion on the fairytale character of the film! In fact, the additional title for the version that was released in Germany is "Zerschossene Träume", which directly translates to "Dreams shot to pieces", but means "Shattered Dreams" in an ambiguous context. Probably one of my favorite films and the only reason, why I wear denim jackets (nice detail by the way).

A brilliant film, one of my favorites as well. I know how you feel about (most) contemporary cinema, but what do you think about Malick's recent films? Song to Song, Knight of Cups etc. PS: Still gonna recommend The Wild Boys to you (available on Kanopy and Amazon Prime). Another all-time favorite of mine, and probably the second best film of the decade. It is inspired by things like Kenneth Anger, Fassbinder, Borowczyk, Paul Schrader, Lynch, Genet, Friedkin and Burroughs.

Malick said the fairytale quality was influenced in part by how he saw how Kitt was waving around his gun like it's magic wand that makes all nuisances away, and Malick seemed to kind of be pursing the folklore aspects of the killings, I heard he told the cast not to think of details of the murders or something, so it all feels like this pieced together recollection and he wanted the movie to have a dream like quality; He said something like the innocent fairy tale presentation and made the violence easier to stomach(but what about the Thin Red Line then? ha ha) and later down the road after having made the movie he realized it was influence largely by Tom Sawyer an Nancy Drew and books of that nature, it seems a large reason the way the movie is working is because of Malick's constant preoccupation with innocence and finding it in this horrible situation. It was his most tightly controlled project; he only cut two scenes. Malick is my favorite director( along with Robert Bresson and Lukas Moodysson) I'm really happy you reviewed this.
