Reading is Expensive (A Rant)

Comments

I try to go through 10% of the book to be convinced it's worth finishing. If it's 500 pages long, then 50 pages. It's also okay to read 2-3 books at the same time... I've finished tough books by reading 10 pages a day (but they were worth finishing).

I'm a very slow reader, I'm an english student, and I have a life. If a book hasn't gripped me, or convinced me to stick through it til the end (by 20-50 pages, depending on its length), then I chuck it. I know a lot of people like to stress themselves out to finish what they start, but when it comes to books I just don't see the point. Reading is rewarding, yes, but also incredibly time consuming. Read wisely.

Also, I find there is nothing wrong with using supplemental materials to help guide a reading of a difficult text (i.e. The Bloomsday Book by Harry Blamires while reading Ulysses).

I tried to read "War and Peace" last year, and it bored me to tears. The same thing happened with Plato's "The Republic" earlier this month. Those are the two BIG books that I've given up on, so far.

This is off topic, but, is film or literary theory something that interest you? Would you considering exploring theory in later videos?
