Happy Friday the 13th everyone.

1. Currently Reading - Death to the Bullshit Artists of South Texas

From local Austin author Fernando Flores, this is a strange Jarmusch/Wenders meets Alex Cox and Penelope Spheeris collection of short stories all dealing with the histories of fictional Punk rock bands in Texas.

Gritty oddball narratives and tons of excellent music references.

If you're a fan of any of the directors mentioned you may want to check it out.

2. Need a music recommendation? This is so awesome. Music-Map.

I'm constantly searching for new music. I recently came across this and thought it was a great resource.

First you type in a band/artist.

Based on data gathered from fans of that band/artist, it will recommend other bands/artists for you, in a word cloud format.

So when I type in Erik Satie, this is what appears:

And it's free.

3. Charles Mingus Documentary

Charles Mingus was a Jazz legend and an enigmatic, humorous character.

I'm looking forward to watching this.

And if you've never heard him, my favorite Mingus album is listed below.

4. The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

I was once caught in a snowstorm in Portland OR.

I was listening to this album around that time, and now I always think about a landscape filled with snow while listening to this beautiful, strange, completely unique album.

5. WIRE - Pink FlagWire's 'Pink Flag' is one of my favorite art punk/post-punk albums - I've loved this band for years. A challenging and unpredictable band.

1 2 X U is terrific.

Bonus: A Great View in Austin

Mingus. If you haven’t already, check out the book BENEATH THE UNDERDOG: His World as Composed by Mingus. It’s a ride!
