thomas pynchon has become one of my favorite authors in the last year and a half. will be reading gravity’s rainbow again this summer. will be interesting to hear your thoughts.

What you said about not being able to read ALL of the challenging books reminds me of Orlando by VW. There is a scene in that book where Orlando has that same realization. It is so well written... very bittersweet.

Ohhh lordy, you've decided to maybe try the Rainbow hey? I never know what advice to give on it, without writing an essay. Look, you will feel lost. The perspective can jump from character to character, and from character, to "within a characters mind". Like instead of describing what they're experiencing through their eyes, it will switch to the experience of a memory, still through their eyes. It's a dense beast, and it won't leave you really sparkling by finish.. But it's an incredible experience like no other book, and it's tremendously interesting to discuss with others. It's basically an endless well of interpretation to delve into with others. And it might creep back into your head a year later, to re-read it. Which for me, was tremendously pleasurable, the humour was 10x funnier than what I originally picked up on, it seems to flow and make more sense. But still, on your first read you'll find a lot of hilarious bits, some thoughtful bits, some psychedelic confusing bits, and some disturbing passages. Just keep on with it, it's a challenge but I'd wager one that is worthwhile.
