Hello everyone, hope you have an excellent weekend.

Thanks so much for supporting the show.

1. Coming Soon - Michael Kolhaas by Heinrich von Kleist

I'm enjoying this so far - I'd never heard of it before, and on the back it has blurbs from Kafka, Bolaño and Sontag. Werner Herzog has also said great things about it. Incredible.

"I did not write to you last night, it got too late because of Michael Kohlhaas (have you read it? If not, don’t! I shall read it to you!); apart from a short section which I had read the day before, I finished it in one sitting. Probably for the tenth time. This is a story I read with true piety; it carries me along waves of wonder."

- Franz Kafka

Based on historical events, this thrilling saga of violence and retribution bridges the gap between Medieval and modern literature, and speaks so profoundly to the contemporary spirit that it has been the basis of numerous plays, movies, and novels.

It has become, in fact, a classic tale: that of the honorable man forced to take the law into his own hands. In this incendiary prototype, a minor tax dispute intensifies explosively, until the eponymous hero finds the forces of an entire kingdom, and even the great Martin Luther, gathered against him. But soon even Luther comes to echo the growing army of peasants asking, "Isn’t Kohlhaas right?"

Widely acknowledged as one of the masterworks of German literature, Michael Kohlhaas is also one of the most stirring tales ever written of the quest for justice.

2. 20 Best Film Noirs

After reading 'Act of Passion' by Simenon it put me in a Film Noir mood.

I've got to work my way through this list.

My favorite, not on this list, is Rififi (clip is a little loud, heads up).

3. It took a while but I finally got into Cabaret Voltaire

They're something like Goth/Industrial from the mid-80's, same ballpark as Throbbing Gristle, Skinny Puppy or Nitzer Ebb, but then they went and did this track, which samples clips from a film about a Samoan gang from Long Beach, CA in the early 90's called 'My Crasy Life'.

This is one of the best things I've heard this year.

Totally sounds like Aphex Twin, and seems like a precursor to Windowlicker.

Marcel Dettman also did a phenomenal techno mix of it.

Also - Rap scenes from the film.

4. Aren't you glad Hayao Miyazaki isn't your dad?

Poor Goro Miyazaki.

Although, cigarette hanging out of his mouth while making his pour-over coffee, musing about the futility of changing the world as a filmmaker...This is how I want to remember the director of My Neighbor Totoro.

5. I'm Terrified of Kangaroos

But I aspire to be as buff as that one.

Imagine waking up and seeing that out your window with a claw that size.

No.

I can't believe I took this kind of scenery for granted growing up.

There's no filter on here. Just a point and shoot.

It's on the hike to Ramona Falls if anyone's interested.

Marshall L'Amour

Glad to see you're getting around to Kolhaas. My thoughts return to that story a great deal more these days, and I'm it interesting to consider in relation to Walter Benjamin's "Critique of Violence," which I'm currently reading. I did find, however, that I preferred the film over the book in this case of Kolhaas.
