I recently read The Mad and the Bad by Manchette. It sounds like it has very similar qualities to Nada. Very enjoyable and fast moving. American noir authors from the 1960's like Jim Thompson and Chester Himes are enormously popular in France and treated like greats of conventional literature over there. They probably had a big influence on Manchette. From the one I read, Manchette is on a level with those two. There is a series of books that came out in Sweden in the late 1960's to late 1970's by the husband/wife team of Per Wahloo and Maj Sjowall that also has some social commentary mixed in. Their series is more of a police procedural than a wild action thriller like Manchette writes. But, their books are good as well and similar in that they seem like crime fiction/mysteries on the surface but have more substance to them than the typical conventional mystery.
