Welcome to Washington, Cliff! I'm so glad you posted this, I was planning on reading some Faulkner after I finish my Finals papers. So far I've only read A Rose for Emily. I was torn between this or Absolom! to start with, sounds like I'll be going with this one. Cheers.

I enjoyed this review tremendously. I definitely want to smash the like button when it goes up on YouTube. I feel like you “got” this book in a way that many readers don’t. I agree with so many points you make and, as usual, you bring out ideas and insights that are inspiring to me, and I am sure to many others. God bless you Clifford. You are a gift.

“As I Lay Dying” was the first of Faulkner’s I read. I haven’t read it in quite a while, but I look forward to return to it this summer.

A novel that I loved by Faulkner, yet seldom is mentioned (let alone read): Flags in the Dust from 1927 (not to be confused with Intruders in the Dust from some 20 years later). It was rejected by a dozen or so publishers before being accepted and then chopped down (at least a quarter of it removed) and renamed into the nearly unrecognizable (but much more well-known) Sartoris. Flags in the Dust was the first of his Yoknapatawpha County novels, and it gives the impression of being written by Faulkner *before* he was Faulkner (in that it's entirely comprehensible, unlike the soon to follow The Sound and the Fury)! It wasn't released in its original form until the early 1970s. It's a novel of nostalgia and faded glory (but then, what great Southern novel isn't?!). I thought it marvelous, and a work of genius.

This was gateway to Faulkner. Loved it.

Surprised you didn’t get into the absolutely bizarre ending, but I respect not spoiling too much! I’m a brand new patron, absolutely terrific channel Cliff, I’ve been binging your videos for the last month or so. Appreciate your work!
