Absolutely fantastic review. Summed up beautifully in words what I think is the essence of Houellebecq's mastery. Read this one last year and it was certainly one of my favorites. This review has reignited my interest and love for his work; will definitely have to return to it

Yoooo that shirt looks great on you dawg. Is it a rogue territory piece?

I haven't read any by Michel H. I'll have to change that. I still need to read Brave New World! Getting old- Autumn Rhythm by Richard Meltzer (I picked up my copy at Powells, he's around your town) along with his Vinyl Reckoning piece, and his piece on the 1900s, can really bum you out but can also produce some awe and belly laughs. Don't forget to LIVE.

"Growing old ain't for sissies" is actually a famous Bette Davis quote. I'm twice your age and can confirm that old Bette knew of what she spoke. Spake.

I read this a couple of months ago not long after reading Serotonin on your recommendation. I enjoyed both. I guess I should watch your review for this one now.

Probably the best author to consult if one wants to get a razor-sharp, unfiltered view of our contemporary world. In fact, I cannot name any other writer (even younger one) during the reading of which I get the visceral feeling that, this is story-time no more, this is the real shit - and its uncomfortable... (there is something Hemingwayesque in Houllebecq in the sense that it seems that his main artistic goal is to write truly and bravely - the analogy ends here, but still...) "This book might destroy him or make him famous" - fun fact: one of the critics of Huysmans's Á Rebours wrote something very similar about that author/novel: "After such a book, the only choice left open to the author is the muzzle of a pistol or the foot of the cross." And, knowing that Houellebecq paid a great homage to Huysmans in Submission, we can see that he clearly dismissed the cross as a valid 21th century option...and drove his main character into a redeeming suicide in Serotonin... *goosebumps. Great (and very-well paced) review of one of my all-time favourite novels, thanks for that! :)

Thanks for the amazing review. I remember you personally recommendeding this to me. I'll get to it very soon now just as I finish Gravity's Rainbow. Keep up the good work Cliff.

Nature is wasteful, and doesn't care if you live or die. Some might say that's evil, but to me: it is what it is... to use the parlance of our times.

"Its not a happy ending" ...*eyes widen*. "A literary suicide bomber" ...that gave me quivers.
