Happy October Ya'll, and what a foggy morning to start it off, beautiful isn't it?

If you wouldn't mind giving your input, I have a quick question.

What topic videos would you like to see?

If you could leave some suggestions in the comments below I'd be very grateful, thank you.

Have a terrific weekend.

1. A book coming out in November by Rafael Bernal translated by poet Kit Schluter who also did "The Book of Monelle" by Marcel Schwob

It's about a man who learns how to speak Mosquito. Looking forward to this...What a synopsis.

---------------

Never before in English, this legendary precursor to eco-fiction turns the coming insect apocalypse on its head

A bitter drunk forsakes civilization and takes to the Mexican jungle, trapping animals, selling their pelts to buy liquor for colossal benders, and slowly rotting away in his fetid hut. His neighbors, a clan of the Lacodón tribe of Chiapas, however, see something more in him than he does himself (dubbing him Wise Owl): when he falls deathly ill, a shaman named Black Ant saves his life―and, almost by chance, in driving out his fever, she exorcises the demon of alcoholism as well. Slowly recovering, weak in his hammock, our antihero discovers a curious thing about the mosquitoes’ buzzing, “which to human ears seemed so irritating and pointless.” Perhaps, in fact, it constituted a language he might learn―and with the help of a flute and a homemade dictionary―even speak. Slowly, he masters Mosquil, with astonishing consequences… Will he harness the mosquitoes’ global might? And will his new powers enable him to take over the world that’s rejected him? A book far ahead of its time, His Name Was Death looks down the double-barreled shotgun of ecological disaster and colonial exploitation―and cackles a graveyard laugh.

2. Harlan Ellison Interview

Includes the story of when a guy came to shoot him after Harlan "cleaned him out" during a game of gin rummy.

Can't wait to read this guy. What an ending haha

Going to read "I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream" soon hopefully.

3. The other day, I suddenly realized that I saw Peter Steele when I was 14

A hell of a memory that cropped up not long ago.

I've never been a Type-O-Negative fan, but I saw them when they came through Portland opening for Cradle of Filth when I was 14. I was a huge fan of Cradle of Filth. Yup.

That show, for the record, changed my life.

They came out wearing orange jumpsuits. It wasn't until now that I realize how important that was, since Steele died some years later.

Now, almost twenty years later, they came up the other day. Type O Negative it turns out...is terrific. Of course it's absolutely cringey tongue-in-cheek sleazy goth rock, with all the good taste of Glenn Danzig in a Budweiser Halloween Commercial...But you know what?

Man... that dude could belt it out. (wait for 1:06)

RIP Peter Steele

4. Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia

Which means (I shit you not) 'the fear of long words'.

5. Bitcoin is very volatile so...

Hahahaha I've never watched Silicon Valley but I love the Napalm Death addition.

Luis Heard

Never thought I'd hear "Silicon Valley" and "Napalm Death" in the same sentence

Malik Vallo

The insect stuff in His Name Was Death sort of reminds me of Vollman’s You Bright And Risen Angels, which also features bugs, but as revolutionaries instead.

JoeTreon

I’ve read nearly every short story and essay written by Harlan Ellison. If you want a starter pack of recs—I’d be happy to oblige. He was a gem.

Miskatonic

Love Type O Negative....seen them play in San Francisco many moons ago

I think I speak for many when I say an updated bookshelf tour would be amazing. Perhaps more reviews on philosophy books as well, not least having guests on the show again. Loved the videos with Amen Dunes, Sadler, Peterson, and Chris Via.

Levi S

Agree that the Amen Dunes vid rocked. And I’m always down for more bookshelf tours. I don’t think I speak for the masses (meaning those viewers outside the borders of patreon), but maybe some vlogs would be cool? Some trips to bookstores, maybe some casual catch ups and discussions that wouldn’t be limited to literary topics?? Actually, since I’m spitballing, what about Better Than Friday videos? Just like a casual vlog with recommendations, updates, etc.? Travel videos once travelling becomes a thing again?? — I don’t know! Do whatever you feel like you can do without risking becoming contrived, I’d say. I’ll stick around for the reviews on their own: anything else on top is bonus material.

Luke vollar

Just keep discussing great books . I'd like to make more people aware of retired author Dominic Cooper and his masterpiece the dead of winter..hell I'll even send you my copy ..from the UK .. peace

Amanda Schofield

Of course the great reviews! I’d like to see an updated bookshelf tour also. I agree 👆🏼with Levi, some bookstore vlogs, casual catch ups, and Better Than Friday videos 🤗

Joshua Reid

I’d love to see an updated review of John Fante’s Ask the Dust, or Miss Lonelyhearts by Nathanael West. Regardless, keep up the great work!

Daniel Massaglia

I think it's almost time for a Bloody Chamber updated review!

Donald Wright

Please just continue with book reviews! Thank you. (I'd love to hear a review of Bloody Chamber, echoing one of the writers above; I've read it and also read Ask the Dust and Miss Lonelyhearts, mentioned above, so would be interested in reviews of them too. I'd especially love to hear a review of Sándor Márai's Embers.)

Joey

Topic videos? Hm maybe something about books that have been influential on your journey. Id love to see a review of Junglist by Two Fingas. I found it on Rough Trade and it was like if Ulysses was set against the backdrop of the London rave scene in the 90s

Benjamin Hager

Im here to request both a “remastered” Sun & Steel review and also for you to review some more Cormac McCarthy (a-la Outer Dark, Border Trilogy). Those are strictly for selfish reasons though. I agree with someone here who said some better than Friday videos or taking us on a couple adventures with you would be really cool. Hope all is well Cliff
