I am very impressed by that heron's balance. Happy Friday everyone.

Currently reading His Name Was Death and it's terrific so far.

A highly original amalgam of misanthropic Tropical Gothic magical realism with political metaphor.

1. Book I want to read - Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell

Been putting this one off for years. A Bourdain recommendation.

-----------------------------------

This unusual fictional memoir - in good part autobiographical - narrates without self-pity and often with humor the adventures of a penniless British writer among the down-and-outs of two great cities. The Parisian episode is fascinating for its expose of the kitchens of posh French restaurants, where the narrator works at the bottom of the culinary echelon as dishwasher, or plongeur. In London, while waiting for a job, he experiences the world of tramps, street people, and free lodging houses. In the tales of both cities we learn some sobering Orwellian truths about poverty and of society.

2. Learning about Rosicrucianism

This channel Esoteric Tower seems to have some interesting stuff, I've been meaning to learn about Rosicrucianism for a long time.

3. The Godfather

Rewatched this for the first time in years.

Deserves all the praise. It really is a great, great, great film.

4. Space is Only Noise if You Can See

One of the best albums maybe ever. Jaar was just a kid when he made it too, I think.

The soundtrack to my nocturnal wanderings through Tokyo.

2011 was a great period for music...

5. Wallace & Gromit

I loved these when I was a kid. Still do.

I read parts of Down and Out back in secondary school. I remember hearing at one point that he might have just made up most or all of it. Like a lot of things one remembers, I can't recall exactly where I heard that.

I just watched The Godfather yesterday! I feel a connection.

I remember reading Down & Out., Road to Wigan Pier and Homage Catalonia as part of my final assignment on Orwell and poverty for my English Literature class at school. To this day Orwell remains one of my favourite writers.

If you're into Rosicrucianism, check out Johann Valentin Andreae. A friend of mine really got into this over him. The German rapper Cr7z rapped on a song: "Manche mögen gerne den Rosenkreutzer analysieren Huh? / ob das was wird bleibt den'n überlassen" (some like to analyze the rosicrucianist huh / if they find something depends on them) His symbolic appears to be rusicrucianist, especially the mixture of old greek myths with Christianity. Although, now with him getting ever more known, he does not speak to that often. At least not as obvious as in his underground days. His great-grandfather was the brother of the famous Rudolph Hess, the right hand of Hitler. It's said, that the Hess family was/is involved in that cult. Thanks for the link, Cliff! Gonna look that up!

Down and Out is great... Orwell's heart for the working class took some time to tune, and he's very honest about that discordance.
