Good evening ya'll, just wrapped a great first week with our bookstore, hope you're having a very nice evening.

Tonight is my last night before I embark on a 3 month transformation challenge that is going to be grueling as all hell. Savoring this last glass of Malbec from Mendoza.

No wine for 90 days. Jesus in the desert. Don't tempt me satan.

Wish me luck. If you see changes onscreen, it's not because of cancer, I swear.

Just taking this pandemic 15lb (25) off.

1. While I'm pretending to be a bodybuilder for 3 months - to be reviewed - Body by Harry Crews

In his highly acclaimed 11th novel, Crews has written a wild, weird black comedy that takes place over one weekend during a women's bodybuilding competition. A secretary has found a new life as a champion bodybuilding contender, but her turns things upside down with their redneck antics.

2. "I got that good a contract because I didn't want to make a film."

Phenomenal interview with Welles.

3. The Ongoing Wow

"We are the authors of ourselves, co-authoring a gigantic Dostoyevsky novel starring clowns."Just sold a book today by this guy, what a character.

4. Beautiful track from Janáček

Find myself gravitating more and more to Leoš Janáček these days.

5. The Foreboding Bari Sax of Colin Stetson

I remember I once got to see him at Mississippi studios in Portland, what must've been a decade ago. Terrific. Love this album.

It'll be a badge of honor to see any transformation my friend! A side note on the bookstore. Do you know if those that do not have Instagram can still purchase from it?

About item #4, the classical track: it's from the opening of the First String Quartet of Smetana. But the opening of the First String Quartet of Janáček is beautiful too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TNeUJYiAoo . Fascinating clip from Welles, and a small-world story: my mother was in Washington, D. C. during WWII, and staying in the same hotel where Welles, his then-wife Hayworth, and the cameraman of Kane, Gregg Toland, were staying. (Many Hollywood types were in D. C. during those years.) She told me that she ran into Welles and Hayworth in the elevator, and that Toland more than once attempted to um, "befriend" her (shall we say), telling her that he could get her into the movies! As far as I know, she resisted the former offer, and definitely did not succumb to the latter!

Oh! Timothy Levitch—what an amazing film and an amazing character! Somewhere I saw a documentary about the tours he used to give of New York City, and they looked fascinating.

Good luck on the transformation. I'm down 35 lb since the start of 2021 thanks to a combination of intermittent fasting, pushups, and sprints. Would be tough to cut out wine/whiskey completely though. Also, I believe you've said before that you're not a fan of Murakami, but Janáček's Sinfonietta plays a prominent role in 1Q84.
