Good morning everyone - reading anything good?

I'm currently reading 'Revolt of the Angels' by Anatole France - Off to a strange and humorous start. Reminds me a little of Flaubert.

Have a great weekend, hope you're having some nice weather.

1. Book to read: The Die is Cast by Robert Desnos

A book from Wakefield Press about drug addiction in Paris by a former surrealist and friend of Georges Bataille who was in the French Resistance, captured by the Gestapo, put in a concentration camp, yet lived until the camp's liberation, only to die of Typhoid a few days after. Desnos had a tragic but fascinating life.

2. Rest in Peace Martin Amis

Still haven't read anything by him, but need to. I was surprised to find out he was a fellow Floridian at the time of his passing.

Pulling "Money" off the shelf for a review soon.

3. Liz Taylor and Richard Burton interview

What a beautiful mess.

4. The Most Haunting Song I've Ever Heard

Now that is what despair and true regret sounds like.

Chilling. Beautiful. Up there with the work of Scott Walker.

Cave did such a good version as well, and apparently was a support when Rose's career was at a low.

Rose also did a version of 'Hey Joe', which eventually found its way to Jimi Hendrix.

5. Black Hole by The Gun Club

A beautiful cover of a beautiful song by the Urinals.

Totally sounds influenced by "Eight Miles High" by The Byrds.

Dunedin Florida last night after the afternoon thunderstorm.

I was so sad to hear about Martin Amis' death. I had the pleasure to take a leak next to him once, in a small venue where he did a reading in Germany. It was a hot summer day and we bonded over our bitching about the lack of an air conditioner and the ban on smoking inside. I remember how strikingly short he was, standing at the urinal next to me. We didn't shake hands but nodded at each other on our way out. I will never forget reading "Money". What a beast of a novel.

Hi Cliff, I recently finished the excellent Deliver me from Nowhere: the making of Springsteen's Nebraska by Warren Zanes. An album very heavily influenced by the short stories of Flannery O'Connor and somewhat of an early left turn musically for The Boss. On the Burton and Taylor interview I highly recommend picking up Burton's diaries just for his stinging observations of Lucille Ball alone. Burton was quite a reader too.The national museum of wales (Cardiff) held a Richard Burton exhibition a few years ago showing off amongst his things some of his books from his personal library in Switzerland. Anyhow there is an online museum-led Richard Burton museum/resource which can be viewed via the following link: https://richardburtonmuseum.weebly.com/

Hi Cliff, just finished the Plague by Camus while on the beaches of Key Largo. Starting Houellebecq’s The Elementary Particles next. Hope you are well!

Howdy Cliff. I am reading The Count of Monte Cristo. It’s my first Dumas. Also reading some short stories by William Faulkner, and a few by Alice Munro. I discovered Munro through a friend a few years back. Her short stories are very compelling. I can highly recommend the collection titled The Beggar Maid, if you haven’t already read it. I hope you’re doing well! Jeff

Just finished Javier Marias' Written Lives, containing short chapters about many famous writers and their eccentricities and the odd events in their lives. Really great.

Reading my first Faulker right now with Absalom, Absalom! coming off the heels of underworld. Unsurprising to hear you’re a Scott walker fan, what a visionary.
