Dude, might I recommend Sacramento. I moved up here from LA this last year. No regrets. The downtown or mid-town area is pretty cheap relative to LA.

There are a few cool book stores in the immediate area. A lot of coffee shops. It's close enough to the bay for a visit, but, far enough to avoid traffic and grossly inflated real estate prices. My only gripe is if you're trying to go somewhere outside of downtown or mid-town area it's pretty hard without a car. Public transportation is not great. If I don't drive into work I gotta run my ass home before six p.m otherwise I could be waiting an hour for a bus.
