Hails from the land of palms and reptiles.

It seems as though we're heading towards peak insanity out there these days, so I hope all is well with you and yours, and that you have a nice relaxing weekend with a book.

Thanks so much for your continued support.

1. Stendhal's 'The Red and the Black' - Recommended to me by many people I think but most recently by the author Quentin S. Crisp (author of Graves) (both paid links)

Seems to be the story of an ambitious but manipulative man in post-Napoleonic France and his self-produced downfall.

Haven't read any Stendhal yet but looking forward to it very much.

2. Incredible Camille Paglia interview on the...Food Network?

Terrific. She's such a strong personality and intellect.

3. Less Than Zero film

Darker than I anticipated, I thought the adaptation was supposed to be lighter than the novel.

Overall it is, but Robert Downey Jr. gives the best 'Adict' performance I've seen in ages.

4. WIRE on Rockpalast

Love these guys. Great attitude. Performances of Practice Makes Perfect, Being Sucked in Again and Pink Flag are excellent.

Bassist Graham Lewis is so sick. Saw them once at Dante's in Portland years ago.

5. Danse Macabre

Used to love listening to Camille Saint-Saëns in my early 20's.

Beautiful performance. Quintessential Halloween music.

James Duval reposted the clip where I mentioned he needs to make a cameo in the film adaptation of New Millennium Boyz if it ever gets adapted. Rad haha

I don't like everything Camille Paglia has said, but anybody who calls Emily Dickinson an "auto-erotic sadist" has my attention.

The Red and the Black looks interesting. Some 19th century French classic realist literature? Tick. The distinctive black, white and orange Penguin Classics book design (circa early 2000s). Tick. A translation faithful to the original. Tick.

Paglia on the Food Network? What the f*ck? How did that happen?
