What do you think gold's value is based on? I think Nixon destroyed the long-term viability of our currency by removing the US from the gold standard. However, the entire wealth of the country's gold had already been confiscated by the Fed. Going back to a standard that is entirely owned by one group is nearly identical to a having none. It won't stop the manipulation of the money supply, which caused the Great Depression.

If the federal reserve raised the real price of the dollar convertibility to gold, we would not be in as big a mess. Instead the fed and the treasury printed more paper devaluing the dollar but failed to adjust the price of gold. Nixon did fuck us but this was bound to happen regardless of who was president.

What upset me more was the comment on greenbacks, the civil war stopped all convertibility of gold for the north and south. Many times in history we see gold standards halted by governments during times of war thanks to the fact Gold is scare which should limit the spending of a government. Instead its easier to declare gold has no value any more and issue paper since you can print so damn much of it. This makes it a perfect tool for wars if you want to indefinitely pay for conflict. we see this today by not limiting our government spending today because its only backed by paper and a promise. This happened in the civil war with the greenback and confederate state dollar, you can also go back to the revolution when we had no gold top pay our troops and used the continental. You can go back before the usage of paper in Athens which debased their gold coins with copper to fiance their government spending and war. Dick I don't like our system either but at least when its run by banks the people can get together can kill the bankers. If the government is in charge, they can kill us if we tried to revolt due to inflation.
