The build up and the aftermath….. (Patreon)

…could they be better than the actual walloping itself ? Hi all, if anyone of you have tried getting chat gtp to draw a female character as much as slightly bending over you’ll know it’s a bit of a nonstarter. 😕 however I do like the way it draws Gracie and Candice in this comic style, so I do challenge myself to see if I can get a pic that alludes to what might be about to happen. In this one it looks like Candice copied Gracie’s fancy dress idea, and is quickly making herself scarce. Although Gracie isn’t one to forgive and forget easily …bets get some cushions ready Candice 😜
Anyway the volleyball comic is finished and will be posted very soon. Hope you enjoy the way it pans out.
I was thinking a bit more about Pesky-Doo, and in particular why Charlie actually works so well in that Daphne role.
Because on paper… she probably shouldn’t 😄
Daphne has always been that slightly glamorous, slightly unlucky character — the one who ends up in trouble more often than anyone else.
But she’s not usually asking for it. It just sort of… happens. Charlie, on the other hand…
Well. Charlie has a habit of helping things along. That’s what makes it fun.
She’s not just wandering into situations — she’s:
pushing her luck
testing boundaries
absolutely convinced she can get away with it
Right up until that very specific moment where she realises…
…she can’t.
That gradual shift from:“I’ve got this under control”to“This might not be under control”to“…oh.”
There’s something very satisfying about that kind of payoff as a reader. Not because the character is being picked on, but because the story has earned it.
You’ve seen the warnings. You’ve seen the chances to stop. You’ve seen the decision to carry on anyway.
So when things finally catch up with them… it feels inevitable.
And that’s why Charlie works so well in this role.
She creates those moments herself.
(And then has to deal with the consequences 🍑😄)
Of course, that only works because of the people around her.
Rosie seeing it coming a mile off.Mum keeping an eye on things.Gran… being Gran.
So I’m curious what you all think:
What makes a moment like that satisfying for you as a reader?
Is it:1️⃣ The build-up2️⃣ The character realising too late3️⃣ The “I told you so” factor4️⃣ Or something else entirely
And be honest…
Do you enjoy it more when the character knows exactly what they’re doing…or when they only realise a little bit too late? 😄
I would find it interesting to hear your thoughts — before I start the pesky-doo parody, because it’s those little details that shape how the scenes end up playing out.
oh and one last thing, does anyone know what colour underwear Daphne used to wear? 😂😂😂
Back soon with the comic.
