Heads Up: The microphone audio cuts out at the beginning and comes back in 1/3 of the way into the episode, we filled in with camera audio here. Sorry about the sound. Thanks for understanding :)

Jordan and Jarvis recently watched the long-anticipated last episode of Black. White. on Jarvis Johnson Gold.

To celebrate this occasion, we watched through the DVD special features including the casting/audition tapes from both families.

Let us know what you think of the ep :)

The video y’all did on this was the hardest I laughed in a while I’m so excited for this

Patrick M

The journey is complete. THE BLACK/WHITE BASTARDS

Hoagie Jay

My favorite show just got canceled so I desperately needed this!!

Miles

I thought the families were all actors though no? People found Rose and Bruno and they have different last names and are both people that were in other stuff. I feel like the "original casting videos" were done posthoc.

Christine

i think i read somewhere that bruno was actually her stepdad and that’s why? although i think she also doesn’t really have a relationship with him anymore. they’re actual families but casted for the show.

Bea

So strange how in the Sparks video, it was mainly the parents talking. But with the Wurgels they put the kid front and center. Like the Sparks actually wanna protect their kid, but Carmen wants to offer hers up to the wolves

Bea

Also, the way Rose talked about Bruno and boundaries, and not having a door to her room, was really scary. Like it had my hair standing on edge. And like "how to talk to a 16 year old girl". Like. Something has clearly Happened, and it makes me so sad for her based on the signs that are there :(

Kschiwy

THE DAY IVE BEEN WAITING FOR????

nico

Jordan's shirt is 🔥

Lunar

The focuses were so stupid. The poetry exercise was interesting but did they ever actually talk about their histories as families? Did they talk about internal dynamics? Did they approach the handing down of prejudices from parent to child through their individual family histories? They both could’ve probably respected each other and understood themselves differently.

Sean Robertson

watch 30min onwards for the white casting vid. rose and her real mother, but she doesn't live with her, and Bruno is her mom's boyfriend

Lee U

They really found the like most normal regular nice black family and then the most insane white family in existence and put them together

Lee U

The mom responds like yeah Bruno has learned to knock. Like before he was bursting into the room of a girl who is not his daughter unannounced. Yikes.

Kesley George

This casting tape gave me the ick 😬

mippy

does everyone else get 2 emails when there’s new content or am i subscribed twice somehow

nakaka

one is for the audio version of the episode, one is for the video version

nakaka

Whoever's in the plaster at 5:30 looks like Mitch McConnell

Tyla Stark

Holy shit poor Rose 🤯 I hope she's gotten some good therapy in the years since because uh... fucking yikes

L.Lopez

Hello there, I’m new here & just wanted to say how glad I am that I joined, and to put some blame on y’all beautiful ppl, I guess lol because you’ve sparked my once thought dormant interest in MTG & my former Festering Kavu deck®️ (not really) that I used to play with and annoy my friends with. So thank you!

maxx ethan

jarvis i'm so sorry as a louisianian and Certified Grits Lover you're missing out on peak comfort food

Sisi 77

Carmen ignoring Rose for a new boyfriend would be insane and horrible if he was the best person in the world but for BRUNO???

Drawn at Random

"I want to become zombie Steven" was objectively the best place for the slightly janky lo-fi audio to suddenly kick in

Samantha lloyd

communion is taking the body and blood, its the action, while the eucharist is the entire mass I believe. That is why its called out first communion when we take the bread and wine the first time :). anyway, wild video lmao

Abigail

Regarding discipline:A few of my white friends had to “pick their own switch” at least once but all their families were Southern country (either from rural Georgia or North Carolina). (For those who don’t know, “picking your own switch” means that you have to go outside and find your own switch for your punishment. Clearly you wanted a thinner, softer branch but if you did it too thin, you got an extra punishment for not picking the “right” switch.)

OneofDani

Can confirm. Am whie woman and will cry at the drop of a hat. Poor hat! 😭😭😭😭

R.E. Beaulieu

The interview with the Wergels is INSANE. I have no idea what Rose went through but I hope she was able to heal. The red flags waving in the wind were DEAFENING.

Francesca Varney

My parents had 50/50 custody (half weeks) of my brother and me for 10 years. Yes, it’s disruptive. Some aspects of it were nice but I wouldn’t recommend it unless it was 1 week or more at a time and the kids have two of many of their things. It sucked having to lug my things back and forth. Despite my home state preferring shared parenting like this since at least 1998 when my parents divorced, I’ve never met anyone else that was raised like this.

Francesca Varney

My (white) grandma grew up in a rural part of Ohio and hated cats for the same reasons mentioned. She felt allowing them on counters and giving them milk was very spoiled, particularly since her family wasn’t well off. I could be wrong but I feel like this attitude might be more correlated to rural/poor than skin color or other cultural factors

Chris

Your grits story is the exact same reason I can't eat licorice.

An August Virgo

I'm mixed race (b/w like Jarvis and Jordan) and I was about the same age as the kids in this video in 2006 (14/15, freshman going into sophomore year) and I think the way we talked about race back then is correctly represented in this show. This show would not exist today! I think we have a better understanding of racism/how race affects the lives of other people because of what we've been able to see on the internet and it is crazy to think a grown man like Elon Musk and others like him have the same mindset of a 16-year-old in 2006 😬

An August Virgo

Also regarding the whole discipline part, I was also physically disciplined but it was to the point of abuse/beatings, combined with verbal and emotional abuse, and now I'm an adult with severe anxiety and depression, and have trouble expressing my emotions.

Rachel Gonzales

They were also on an episode of Oprah, too if you want more brain rot. Also, I don’t know what the turn around time for a 2006 reality show is, but Rose was like 19 when the show came out.

Emily Riebeek

Eucharist is actually just the greek word for communion :) theyre used interchangeably in general, but i wouldnt be surprised if some denominations might give them slightly dif meanings

Mari-Cherri

That casting video was truely insane. What the hell

ofukuro

For some added context, part of the reason black folks beat their kids is a direct result of chattel slavery. It's generational trauma and a fear that the 'white man' will do worse if a child is out of control. It makes a lot of sense when you think about the usual choice of weapon (switch, belt, etc.). Yet another moment white supremacy is pervasive :).

Ziggy Karraa

equating bruno to recoome is the intersection i never knew i needed

lauren

always been confused about the stereotype that white people don’t hit their kids bc when i was a kid many of my friends of all races got hit

Hayden Mason

kinda upset/sad ive been catching up on nights and now im all caught up 😞 i love this pod so much i cant wait for more episodes!!

Robin Hulbert

Child abuse always spikes in populations who experience violence/marginalization. Abuse is very often a product of/influenced by a person's surroundings. The group, maybe even the individuals, aren't always to blame, and we don't have to judge them, but we can also acknowledge simultaneously that it's everybody's responsibility not to hurt kids. We can empathise but let's not tolerate or downplay it. Speaking of, I think it would be a good idea to have a bit of content warning for child abuse in this ep. If you're not comfortable with that term, then you can say "implied violence against a minor" or something similar would be a good idea I think

Robin Hulbert

On a more lighthearted note, for a voice within the black community, blackbeltbabe on tiktok has a series called the "make it a fair fight foundation"

Kschiwy

I relate to Rose a lot, especially how she is very upset about her situation with her mom and her mom is seemingly oblivious to the fact that SHE has control over the situation and her daughter has none. When my mom was dating when I was in high school, I was alone most of the time and it was neglectful, but my mom always made excuses to convince me that it wasn’t. It seems like Rose was experiencing very similar circumstances. I cant imagine then in the midst of this, having to DO BLACK FACE WITH YOUR MOM AND HER BOYFRIEND.

TuxedoFriday

Rose crying about not seeing her mom Carmen "That's showbiz baby"

Paloma Preeria

She's hitting her daughter with the "Carmen-Harmen-HA!"

nyxie

3:35 this looks like a rejected depiction of the Sunken Place from Get Out
