“The paradox of asymmetry as both chaos and order” me when I wanna sound academic

[long ass comment incoming] the annual college admissions discourse is always so amusing to me, like you’ll have these people whining that they or their sibling’s kid or whatever didn’t get into [insert elite uni] despite have a 50.0 GPA and a 5 million on the SAT as if everyone else who applied to the school didn’t have a similar resume, i went to one of the “elite” US unis and you couldn’t throw a stone on campus without hitting someone who was in the top 5% of their high school class and got straight As, these places are bursting at the seams with overachieving former gifted kids who’ve been coding since they were in pampers and have at least one startup under their belt… most of the elite universities will literally tell you in open houses and stuff that it’s not enough to just have good grades you need to also be an interesting person beyond that (the so-called “holistic” review process—which has many of its own flaws), and some people have responded by “teaching to the test” so to speak (AKA stacking their high school resumes with activities that they’ve been told will look good to colleges) but the people in the admissions department and the people conducting interviews aren’t stupid, they can tell when all the extracurriculars on your application are only there to make you look good for college (they can also tell when you’re only applying to college so you can network and drop out halfway which that guy was almost definitely going to do), i think it just comes down to the fact that a lot of these people just don’t understand it and/or are refusing to understand it because they’d rather blame affirmative action or DEI

Lana

As someone at the University of Oxford for undergrad its so interesting to hear how the admissions process works there, you don't get interviewed by your tutors/professors? That's mad - also can confirm that you don't have to pay to apply to Oxford undergrad (it's just regular UCAS payment) - can also confirm that yes you are not supposed to have part-time jobs, you can get in trouble for it and some colleges (within the university, because Oxford and Cambridge are collegiate) will give you grants or loans if you need to work because they don't want you to bc it inteferes with work (and tbh depending on the degree it kind of can be a valid thing but is also incredibly classist)

in the main sad boyz ep you mentioned compiling research about AI, and i saw this book that recently came out called Why We Fear AI by Hagen Blix & Ingeborg Glimmer that might be helpful! i haven't read it myself yet, but it looks interesting! www.commonnotions.org/why-we-fear-ai

I did well in school, too, but I can't imagine having the hubris that Zach does. The first drafts of my essays were essentially "please maybe accept me perhaps, like if it's okay with you 👉👈" We were cringe on opposite ends haha

zarratm

Funfact—em dashes are a major hallmark of heavy fanfiction writers and readers. Some think that models were trained on this writing because there is a lot of it freely available online.

I am a video watcher, but I've gotta say, I really appreciate Jordan always explaining visuals for the audio listeners! 💕

This reminds of this guy over here in Australia who claimed that not nutting for a year helped him get into medical school. He got a high score on the medical school entrance exam (GAMSAT) and then claimed he got the "highest score ever" which wasn't even true. He did a really cringe interview with Vice where he claimed that because he went and lived with monks in Indonesia and didn't nut for a year he was able to get into medicine. So before he'd even started medical school everyone knew him as the guy who didn't nut for a year. The best part is that he failed his first year of medical school and I'm not sure he went back after that.

On a Nights episode you guys should look into the NCAA football class-action lawsuit trying to ban Australians getting scholarships to play college football. Basically, Americans are pissed that they are missing out on getting onto teams because Australians are too good at punting and getting the scholarships. I do think there is some nuance to be had here (like it does sound like some people maybe got scholarships they weren't eligible for), but at the end of the day colleges are going to offer those scholarships to the best people for their team. Unfortunately when sports is a big business, that's how it goes. I just personally find it funny that so many Americans are so anti-DEI, and like to claim that they just want the "best person for the job regardless of background" but then when foreigners are better than them, they try to ban them. Like what happened to the best person for the job?? And I feel like if the lawsuit is successful, it opens a door for banning foreign students from getting scholarships in other sports, which has the potential to have a much larger effect on people from lower income countries.

Finally said my name in an episode, I don’t wanna be a grok ai

Reagan

prob spent his first year gooning bc he could FINALLY nut 🙌

Kiwimadd0g

From Zach’s letter,“The students that runs fake clubs and stacks extracurriculars is admitted over the student that runs a real business” Colleges are not and have never been looking for successful businesses people they want students who are curious lmao

Harry James Miller

i got a better score on the ACT then this kid and i went to college for MUSICAL THEATRE

Steff

I try to have....not like, sympathy, but an understanding of the circumstances that leads to this guy's thought process. And to try and give grace and acknowledge the fact that he's still young and maybe some of the really good explanations will get through his skull at least a smidge. Mainly just to lower my stress and keep me from getting too negative and jaded at this point lol

Steff

Oh man now I look weird responding to my own comment but I hit enter by accident, how embarrassing lol 😭. Anyways, in conclusion: stuff like this makes it really hard to maintain that energy lmao and I gotta try to rein in the rage that starts simmering 😂 luckily I have no social media, so I mainly just get updates from the videos like these. Helps keep my blood pressure from getting any higher!

I’m a counselor involved in admissions- since Covid, it has become more holistic. Admissions at elite schools are admitting a class. Grades, rigor of school courses, and personal character are top priority. Failed the personal character test. I wonder too if his GPA was inflated- no APs because he thought he was better than it etc

Amalie Lind Ravn

Went into the comments to see if someone had mentioned this already. Em dashes are my friends :)

Genevra Black

I'm a fiction editor and I can tell you confidently, those bitches love their em dashes. People I know for 100% fact are not using AI. Forty freaking em dashes every page.

aimsu

legends supporting legends!! I love to see it 😭✨

First, the Supreme Court literally made affirmative action illegal, and the admissions people are taking that fucking seriously considering the current administration. They know these fuckers will sue or complain to the Trump administration and get billions in funds cut. Second, it recent years, affirmative action most recently has helped men, because college don’t want to be 20% male to 80% female, which is what would happen if you did it straight in merit!!! (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/08/magazine/men-college-enrollment.html) Third, as someone who works in university admin (not admissions), what his essay indicated to me is he will be a pain in the ass. Even before the rest of his actions were revealed, I knew this was someone who at least once a week will send me an email saying “I’m not paying all this money for this!” This is not someone who will accept anything less than an 100% and raise that up the the university president (probably as the first step). He will be loud to everyone if he doesn’t get into whatever secret club or frat he applies to and then be on OAN complaining about the Illuminati. It’s not because he is a weirdo with no social skills, it’s because he is a loud weirdo with no social skills who will make every small problem a massive issue (proven by him placing this on twitter!)

Tabitha

As a Gen Z creative writing person (aka I write and read fanfic), I can tell you the em dash is alive and well.

Elliot Rae

I can't pretend that I'm not disappointed that these aren't unlisted on YouTube. I like to watch the boys on my TV.

Bahy

They will pry the em dash from my cold dead hands 🩷

Lance Elliott

I'm crashing out bc I'm 20 and I feel like my life will never get better. Watching y'all gives me hope.

Dylon Merrell

Man I love the sad boyz fan base lol

Dylon Merrell

Bandlab is actually really cool and has a lot of big DAW features. The singer D4VD made all of his music in it and one song has billions of streams.

Alexis

“Coaching is the supplements of meetings” is a gem

Kendall

The emdash = AI thing frustrates me to no end bc if you have to write formal writing/reports in your career, you use emdashes! I use them all the time in my job but never beforehand

Moss

You and me both bro but we’ll be okay

Indi B

I looooove GarageBand, it’s user friendly and bloody free! Home gear is expensive. My only gripe is that if you have an iPhone it auto connects you IPhone as the input mic (maybe there is a way to turn that off lol).

Rachel Eakes

i think my biggest thing with the admissions essay is even if he DID get in, and his personality is exactly like in his essay, then it would be really hard for him to make good friends. And to Jordan's point-- he doesn't need the structure or leg up of college since he's already made money and has a successful business. And it's so successful he won't need to take out loans to pay for school and will probably just treat it like a luxury product customer service transaction and expect the college to do whatever he wants since he's paying for the education outright.

Void WL

Being a baby businessman has melted this kid’s brain. He thinks NEGGING the college will make them say “yeah let’s accept this guy”???

Void WL

The letter is giving big energy of that scene from the social network where the woman tells Zuckerberg “girls don’t like you but it’s not because you’re a nerd it’s because you’re an asshole”

Void WL

Yeah I’m a fanfic writer and em dash is my WIFE!!! I got my start in the Les Mis fandom so I was basing my punctuation habits loosely on Victor Hugo to start out but even with my more modern fandoms I still gravitate to POV characters with personalities that let me have 80 word sentences in the prose with 2 em dashes and a semicolon

Void WL

I’m a fanfic writer and lol I’m in this picture and it’s embarrassing. Em dash is my wife. I cut my teeth in the Les Mis fandom so I was trying to have Victor Hugo style punctuation, but even now in more modern fandoms I gravitate to characters who would have super wordy internal monologues because that’s just the kind of prose I like to write I actually set rules for myself to keep my prose readable— a maximum of two em dashes per paragraph (except in special circumstances like a paragraph of sentence fragments conveying frantic action but I haven’t done those in a while)

dee

take me to court is underrated, jordan cooked with that

dee

same! I was a semicolon fiend before I figured out the beauty of the em dash-- always looking for more ways to toe the line of run-on sentences

Maria Rosas

I applied to colleges this year and I was always told to “show not tell” in my essay. I felt like I didn’t see any of that in his.

Aubrey Planitz

My friend recently dropped in a group photo from Ezster into an AI program to make everyone look like a cartoon. They proceeded to turn my biracial girlfriend who is more mask presenting than I am into a white man with a goatee. We all had a good chuckle, but also realize that AI is wicked sexist.

AprilMaeJuneJ

lol I got accepted to college while watching this

Clare Perry

Oxford does not charge to apply and is getting much better with state school admissions, the rich students there still make for an elitist vibe but the colleges themselves are really good for giving more scholarships to students with low income background than most unis in the uk. Plus all uk unis charge the same fee tuition

mango :3

as a georgia tech student in 2026 i can confirm gt accepts 'the joker' type people like this all the time 😭😭

re: working part time at cambridge- it’s still like that! i have a friend who did her masters there a year ago, and she was telling me about how stressful it was that she had to work a TON to save up before her year at cam bc she wouldn’t be allowed to work that whole time😭 i understand what they’re going for but it’s just not feasible at all in the real world
