Not a teenage girl here, lol! This show has themes of love and sexual exploration, but the fanbase you're talking about probably wouldn't look at this show in the same way. This show did an amazing job with its visual storytelling, and I would almost say it's more about grief and loss. I wouldn't say it fetishizes gay men. If anything, it shines a light on the oppression of the LGBTQ+ community. I've watched the series a few times and I'm still picking up on some of the hidden messages woven throughout the show.
