While I loved the movie, I too hated how the film was marketed, even the title spoils a lot. When I first read the manga, I had no idea what would happen and the Reze reveal with her singing in Russian while choking out that guy was genuinely shocking. I feel like they should have named it something different, idk, "Chainsaw Man: Explosive Arc" or "Bomb Arc" or something. And I feel like the trailer should only have shown stuff form the first half of the movie before Raze trasnformed for the first time. Honestly, it's just a criticism of the movie and advertising industry as a whole, spoiling too much to put as many butts in seats as possible. Like, manga fans wouldn't need to see stuff from the second half to get hyped and people who saw the first season either liked it enough to go see the movie or didn't. I feel like the trailers and marketing were overkill for no reason.

100% agreed, the one trailer literally shows her being his love interest and then basically turning into the villain and then fight scenes. Too much important info eliminating big reveals in the anime. Criticism for the trailer yes, but I should also just stop watching trailers haha. I like to to build up the hype and such, but it comes with risks such as this. Also thanks for coming to patreon to check out the movie!

alex_and_anime

You know, it's kind of mess up. The fact that reze the pain every time she exploded.

A lot of people really like fast-paced action and that's part of what will draw people to a theatrical release. However, Mappa definitely mishandled how they advertised the action here. They could have focused the fighting in the trailer on Denji + Beam vs the Typhoon Devil and shown the Bomb Devil only through explosions and destruction that don't reveal Reze's voice or appearance so that the twist would still have been a shock.

Dreadz314

its a good drawback for someone who kills atleast 10 people each time she uses it

To each their own, you docked points for writing, I think the writing, especially the subtle stuff, is what should have made it anime movie of the year, definitely over Infinity Castle, but I also have a CSM profile pic so I’m biased. The character arcs, the subtle hints, the homages… When he asks Makima if he has a heart, she listens, but if you watch closely, she sniffs, smelling for pochita as she did in season 1, then she touches his chest in an intimate way, but she lingers on his rip cord. Denji’s heart - to her - the thing that gives him meaning, is chainsaw. Denji then finds his will, he has a heart now, and hearts do good things, so he donates money and is given a flower, white and pure, a representation of his heart. Reze enters the phone booth, hand on her grenade pin, and seeing what her target actually is, hesitates to pull the trigger. Denji gives reze his flower, his heart. Whether she means to or not, Reze takes it, and cares for it, gives it light and water and places it on display. The spider/butterfly scene shows Denji getting caught in her web, but it’s a monarch butterfly, which are poisonous when eaten. The spider and the butterfly doom each other. “Everyone’s after my chainsaw heart, what about MY heart, DENJI’s HEART?! Does nobody want that?!” Ouch. Her response to hearing makima’s name “we couldn’t have run away together anyway” hints that maybe she WAS considering it, now that we know she did commiserate with Denji about being a governmental tool and never experiencing life, the same as her. The colorful bombs scene plays out with a version of the festival music during the fight, referencing the fireworks that marked the bomb devil’s arrival. We get to the final fight (the office building lights count down from 10 in each frame cut, pretty cool) in front of the water where Denji bests her by embracing her, retracting his chainsaws to stop the bloodshed and they sink, she CAN explode underwater, we’ve seen it. She chooses not to, and rests her head on Denji’s shoulder and waits to drown. On the beach, Denji reaffirms that he wants to run away with her, she knows that makima will never let him. It seems she breaks his neck to help her get away, more likely she breaks his neck to stop him from following and endangering himself. Reze’s leaving town, she donates money to the “victims of devils” fund, the fund taking care of the thousands of people she just harmed, and is given a flower, a red one, because her existence is soaked in blood. She weighs it, thinks about it. Denji’s heart is back at the cafe. Even if hers is different, it’s still a heart. So the country mouse decides to find the city mouse, but the country mouse is in danger in the city. And so it goes. Reze died watching Denji waiting for her with a massive bouquet of flowers “his whole heart”. Denji will forever think Reze walked off that beach to freedom without him and never looked back. Makima… how did she know Reze chose the country mouse? Why was she looking out her window silently swinging her cup to the tune of Reze’s murder song? Aki tosses his cigarettes in the trash without smoking one. Not for health, he’s dead in 2 years max. Because of easy revenge. Himeno offered him his first cigarette, when he finally took it, he said “this will be my first and last cigarette.” It was his first, but she took it back because he was a minor. Her last act of love for Aki was staying the Ghost Devil’s hand and offering that cigarette back to Aki to alleviate his fear, because the ghost devil senses fear instead of sight. He sat down that night and smoked it, it was his first and last cigarette. Aki and Angel. The amount they change each other in 1 movie is so beautifully written. Starting with Aki reaffirming that he’ll never accept a devil, Angel saying he’s a devil first, he wants to see humans suffer. Ending with Aki sacrificing some of the 2 years he had left at most to save angel, giving up what little he has for a devil, because whether he admits or not, he loves Denji, and he loves power, and Aki can cry. Everyone else is ready to die, but as Himeno said, Aki is the one left to cry for them. Angel then is faced with a dying human, who he would have usually just let suffer while he watched, refusing to touch them, she reaches for his halo and passes out. He had just experienced a human suffering and sacrificing on his behalf, not the agony of dying, but the agony of living, and it changed his thinking. He grabs her hand and kisses it as she passes on, telling her she’s going to heaven. He is the angel devil. The chainsaw devil is still and chainsaw. The shark devil is still a shark. And even though he is a devil, the angel devil is still and angel, and he decided which one he’d rather be. Angel ends with makima admonishing him for not bringing Aki to murder reze. “You didn’t want to make him kill a girl?” Which could refer to Aki’s grief for Himeno, or something else. Either way, angel says “I am an angel, after all”. Angel showed Aki that devils are more than what he hated. And Aki showed angel that humans can suffer for more than death. I’ve seen it said that Aki and Angel are a metaphor for the AIDS epidemic. And AIDS was reduced to a problem of the gay male community in social thinking, but in reality it still killed women. CSM takes place in a 90s setting. A man and a twink become partners, one is ready to die at any moment, if they touch each other without “protection” the other’s lifespan is reduced. I rambled and I’m sure there’s a ton more I’d want to say, I could talk about CSM for hours, but in the end, CSM is the epitome of a classic tragedy, covered by a veneer of comedy, where on the first watch some stuff seems silly or stupid, find yourself laughing here and there. The more you rewatch and understand, the sadder each moment becomes, especially the ones that seemed funny at one point. And I think it takes a masterclass in writing to make something like that. I hate the sub/dub debate. I am an enjoyer of both and usually watch all my favorite shows in each. If you’d watched sub here, I’d be conversely recommending to also check out the dub sometime for XYZ reasons. But if you end up ever doing a rewatch off camera, I encourage you to try the sub now that you’ve seen the dub. Some parts have a different feel and gravity and it’s definitely worth it to experience both. And the homages, so many. If interested, just google “film references in chainsaw man”. Tons.

Tbh this is why I never watch trailers nor opening/ ending until the last episode. I just go in blind
