the hose was having a hole melting in it but was not all the way through, the cloth was probably treated with something to help neutralize and seal any leaks. Hydrogen Sulphide is very stinky so you can detect it before it reaches toxic levels but those levels aren't very high so if you smell rotten eggs leave immediately.
