James Yancy

By the standards of our world the mayor is corrupt, but in actuality it was Rosemyne who "stole" the children from him. What the mayor was doing was considered normal for them. Ferdinand didn't actually care about what the mayor was doing, he was just upset about how the mayor was treating nobility. As someone living outside of the main city of the Ehrenfest Duchy the mayor doesn't actually get a lot of interactions with nobles, and is somewhat ignorant of his own behavior around them when Rosemyne arrived. As for the orphans that didn't want to join the monastery, it was because despite being orphans they might still get a chance to receive a plot of land to farm and eventually be able to get married and have a family. Those becoming grey priests will most likely stay priests for the rest of their lives with few exceptions. Rosina, Rosemyne's music teacher, is one of those exceptions because Rosemyne literally bought her from the church. It's why you don't see her in Priest robes anymore. She might be considered a slave, except that Rosemyne gives Rosina plenty of latitude and would likely even allow her to marry and have her own life if it came to it. That said, Rosina spends most of her time around nobles and doesn't get many chances to meet commoner men in a leisurely setting.
