Ferdinand often gives Rosemyne a hard time, but much of that is for her own sake to prepare her for a life she wasn't born into. He's trying to give her every advantage and head start he can. Ferdinand actually does care deeply for Rosemyne for all the reasons you stated, and also because she is one of the rare people capable of matching Ferdinand in terms of both mana and especially intellect. Ferdinand is sort of a mad scientist and Rosemyne is a mad librarian. They have more commonalities than is obviously apparent.
