People have sort of assumed for a long time that the villains of Legend of Korra are meant to fit tidily into our little political boxes, and I want to take a look at why those allegories do or do not work, and what his philsophy might really be.

Super interesting video! I will say, maybe this is an America vs. New Zealand thing, but the trope of communists wanting to strip away individuality with like, grayscale forced conformity, is super common here in the states because of red scare propaganda - it's something that even just random people have earnestly argued to me individually. And re: the "impurity" bit, horseshoe theory is unironically fairly popular here - a lot of people equate nazis and the communists that beat them in ww2. That history/propaganda might have influenced why so many folks here (myself included) see/saw Amon in that light. I obviously agree that if the show is trying to parallel Amon and Communism, it does a bad job of it, but that doesn't necessarily mean that wasn't what the creators were going for (and its certainly there ~enough for folks to read the show that way)

i think a video on people who push these onto characters would be better as it degenerates the character into a small knit box, more or less washing the character out with their own view... a philosophical 'white washing' more or less.
