Intrusive thoughts are actually a weirdly normal thing. As to why they happen, there's different theories in psychology/neurology. One I heard is that they are sort of a test system of your brain? Like, when driving on the street, your brain might go "Yo, what if you just turned left here right into the oncoming traffic, can you imagine that?" and your conscious thought going "What, NO!" is sort of affirming your choices and critical thinking process. It might also be related to the fact that our brains are actually two entities connected via nerve tissue and membrane, so part of these thoughts may come from the other, "silent" half of you. THAT SAID, if you have bad impulse control and an emotionally turmoiled state of mind, this is REALLY bad, obviously. So Ratticus here having enough self-reflection to understand he has an issue is a step in the right direction.
