428 - Steam? Maybe. (Patreon)

HELLO and welcome to another Monday post, your regularly scheduled reminder that I do, in fact, still exist and occasionally produce things. This week was both a busy one and a bit low on things I could actually brag about. I was so busy, in fact, that I had no time to play any games or watch any fun videos. But I do still have some news to share :)

Getting completely ignored by GOG gave me additional motivation to attack the Steam bureaucracy again. And this time I succeeded (more than previously, at least). I uploaded Princess Quest for approval and, in 4 days, got a reply saying (I am paraphrasing, obviously): get rid of Princess Jasmine if you don't want to go to The Big Mouse jail.

IN PRINCESS QUEST, Jasmine is called Justmean, and she is wearing a completely original outfit designed by yours truly—but that was not enough. So I set out on my own quest to redraw and rewrite things. It sounds easier than it is. There are a lot of things that needed changing. As a result, I had to put all my Reporter Trainer work on pause and concentrate fully on creating a Steam version of Princess Quest.

IT TOOK ME 3 days to redraw all the CG, chibi art, sprites and all that. I really wish I had been working on Reporter Trainer instead, but at this point I just want to see this whole thing through and find out if I can pull it off or not. As of today (Monday), I’m done with all the graphical assets, but I still need to edit the text a bit—changing Justmean to Princess Royalgirl or something—and then test it from start to finish again, across all three routes and endings. It’s probably going to take me 1 or 2 days, but in any case, I should be back to working on Reporter Trainer by Wednesday.

OH, AND ALSO, I recolored the turtles (again) and gave them cute little horns (because they are supposed to be demons). Nobody asked me to do this, but at this point I just don’t want to worry about this stuff anymore. I just want to upload the game to Steam, see for myself that it is, in fact, possible to sell EDUCATIONAL games there, and return to work with peace of mind. This Steam thing has been on my to-do list for way too long.

THE GAMES. Yeah, I was way too busy (both physically and mentally) to play games properly, but I was still able to sneak in a bit of Jak X. Man, I love that game so much XD. During periods of my life when my brain is too busy or tired for proper narrative-driven games, I often default to fun stuff like SSX3 or Burnout 3. But this time I decided to revisit Jak X, and I’m so glad I did. I know it’s not possible, but it felt like the game got even more fun since the last time I played it (a couple of years ago). #^_^#AND THAT’S IT. Not too much news, but at least I can honestly say that this was a busy and productive week. Now scroll down, enjoy the obligatory gif, and I’ll see you all next Monday! Laterz!

There are 5 actually. There is also Daxter on PSP which covers the events of the two year that Jak was in prison. A phenomenal game, even though made a different developer.

Glad you're making some progress on Steam! Would be a big lift but would be cool to get all of your games on there. Side note, I know "Once a Porn a Time" is on steam and has characters along the same vein (including their actual names like Snow White and Tinker Bell). Would be curious how they got onto steam as well then. Maybe giving the option for people to free name characters while having "suggested" default names would be enough to get around it?

Nice retouch in Jazmine, I think is even better than the original design. Good luck with the Steam release, I think you should have no problem to upload this there with those changes!

"Once a porn a time" doesn't include Disney-versions of those characters. Snow White and Tinker Bell are in public domain. But their Disney versions - aren't.

I read it as "Stream" and got really excited. Then reading about adding PQ in steam, things just got real. Excited again

Well, at least your getting there and anyone with half a brain will get the turtles and jasmine. I spent my weekend rebuilding my main pc from 11 to 10. The fun part is reinstalling app that I need and them wanting me to register again and having to jump through the hoops to show I already own it.

That's all awesome! You can finally become a Steam Tycoon! As for Disney, yeah, they are real jerks about parody, even if it's technically legal. As for Ninja Turtles, I once had April O'Neil appear in my comic, but I had Jim Lawson draw it, so worse case scenario we'd have to call Peter Laird to save us from Viacom.

Well, sometimes you gotta run 'original' content to avoid the House of Mouse. I mean they own about everything. Heck in the tabletop game Shadowrun they make jokes about that... in that timeline apparently Disney bought out Winchester so there's a sniper rifle in game nicknamed 'The Counter-Sniper weapon of the Big Bad Mouse'. Upside, I LOVE the hairdo! You could always borrow an old Canadian-ism for the name: Every generic princess in Canada tends to be Princess Patricia (she lent her name to a famous light infantry unit here on the east coast).

I have mixed feelings about this, but I understand why you’re doing it. Going to Steam is the right choice for the business. More players and more money will keep the Akaverse alive for a long time, and maybe one day you you will be able to hire a programmer to help you out! At the same time, it’s a bit sad to lose the parodies. Your way of using famous characters is one of the thing that made your games (and before that comics) so special. Renaming her Princess Royalgirl to avoid The Big Mouse'is a funny name, but it shows how strict the rules are now 😣 The internet is losing that wild, rebellious feeling from the old days... I guess Princess Quest is a good test for this. It makes your old, uncensored games feel even more precious now, like treasures from a time when we were more free... Redrawing everything in just 3 days is crazy work. I hope Steam accepts it so you can go back to Reporter Trainer with a "free" mind. Keep up the good work :-)

I will buy everything you put on steam day 1, i will be sad without the direct parodies but ive seen others do slant parodies of disney stuff and im certain you can pull that off beautifully. Like the tmnt adjustment with the horns thats pretty good imo.

I really like Akabur's original characters. I do enjoy his parody a lot, but I would be totally up to "full-size 100% Akabur's original game" to be released on Steam for a bigger audience.

Hey I know I'm late to the party, but I wanted to give you a recommendation on a good name for Jasmine in Princess Quest. I was thinking about something like Jade, it does sound oriental, and I think it fits the theme, this just what I feel should work, but feel free to explore other similar names. I just hope that this comment gives you some inspiration. Keep up the good work.

Princess Jade? Dunno... Doesn't sound very royal to me. What I am going with at the moment is Princess Spoilina the First.

Ok, I have to admit, it sounded good at first, but after saying "Princess Jade" a few times out loud, it really sounds weird, and doesn't have good ring to it. Man, I have no other names to give you 😅, it was just that one, well Princess Spoilina sound weird honestly, but I might just be no getting the reference or joke here, but if you feel like it works, then it works. I always trusted that your ideas will be better than what I come up with. Well... I don't want to take anymore of your time, so good luck, and have a great rest of your day!

Yeah, even if I will be able to successfully put Princess Quest up on steam, I doubt any of my old games could be sold there. The changes would have to be extensive. -_-

Yeah, all that stuff can be really tiresome. Although, to be fair, as much as I love old tech, old PCs were much more prone to freezing and crashing. At least that's how I remember it.

Shadowrun huh? I used to play a game called like that on my Sega Genesis. I think it was first rpg I ever played without even knowing that the ganre exists. Good times :)

Just out of curiosity, what kind of update you have in mind? To me it's a finished self-contained story. Or you just mean you would like to see another TMNT themed game without Old Man in it?

Yeah. We will see how it goes. When I will have some more experience with what is OK and what is not and where the line is that I should not cross. Personally I think I can adjust pretty easily. My games are built on already existing IPs but the content, the story, the art direction is mostly my own anyway :)

Personally, I see the game as more of a gateway to other amazing possibilities—Day One of April’s training. On the second day, for example, Donatelo could explain that their sperm caused a special mutation/sex addiction in April. This would be followed by day two, when her training would begin and, possibly, the intensification of this sensitivity/addiction. There could be new scenes—sexual ones where the guys just have fun with her and she’s their personal cum dumpster—similar to how it is in the game now, but also concentration training scenes where April would strengthen and train while clothed or naked, or she could do sexual reports. An extra scene with Shredder, Bebop, and Rocksteady would also be great, where they’d visit her overnight and have some fun. But that’s just a quick suggestion :)
